One of the best things about Dodie's music is how the lyrics can change meaning over time. I feel like when this was written it was about being excited to get to know someone, feeling drawn towards them and wanting to unpick their brain. Now it feels like the message has changed to the dangers of the human condition- wanting to be loved so bad that we fall in love with the idea of someone, and not who they truly are. We fill the gaps in our lives with manifestations of who we need other people to be.

This is so detailed. I love how ‘his’ voice isn’t harmonising with hers, it’s like a shadow, it’s just an exact mirror of how she sings. He doesn’t have any original thoughts. Even tiny vocal flourishes are exactly the same as hers. He doesn’t have anything she didn’t give him. And she’s gazing at him with all that love, waiting for him to respond to her meaningfully, and she’s so disappointed that he doesn’t. But when she leaves him in the attic, he turns to watch her go, but she doesn’t turn back in time to see it. I love watching this. The worldbuilding is so rich and the song is so beautiful that I can’t get tired of it.

Okay, so it looks like people are taking this music video poetically, which is way cool. I took it rather literally. To me it looks like some girl is unable to find the companionship she wants among real people (either because she's just a bit demented or because of a post-apocalyptic scenario) and she has convinced herself to create the companion instead. She has the power to do so, driving herself mad by being able to create everything about a companion except companionship, making me horrified both by her and for her. It's very ray bradbury to me and I love it. It has a flavor from the episode of the Twilight Zone called "the lonely" where a man is banished to a planet alone, but has been granted a robot woman companion, and convinces himself that she is a real person.

It’s kinda weird how this song feels like how I find relationships. I’ve never been in one but I’ve always liked the idea of being in one. So I think of the first person I see, convince myself I have a crush on them and my “feelings” run wild. But since I really don’t have a good grasp on reality it takes me a couple months, even years to realize it was all lies. One time I ended up hurting someone because of it. I feel awful that this happens and I can’t tell when I actually have feelings for someone or if I just imagine that I have feelings for someone. .....But oh well.

Aromantic here. I was in an almost-relationship (ldr), but ended it on my own terms. I don't regret it, and we're still friends. It's kind of hard to define "being in love" for me, and I felt this song defined what I felt being completely in love with someone was like. Realizing the meaning was "unrealistic" makes sense, but is it wrong to still feel like this could be applied to a healthy perspective on relationships? I don't know. I just like the idea of having this person you can trust and care for so much, romantic or not. I don't have unrealistic standards seeing as I don't actively seek out potential partners, but I wouldn't view anyone as someone who can "fix" me or be the perfect piece to fit into my life. Is it wrong to find this song kind of... comforting?

Thiswas my favorite love song. My ex's favorite song was PERFECT MACHINE by Starset. Recently I noticed how beautifully complementary those songs are if you consider them as the perspectives of each partner in a toxic relationship and I can't stop thinking about it. (I'll use him and her because that's the singer's pronouns and it's simpler to write ok, I'm not even straight.) One starts with "I wanna pick you up and scoop you out , I want the secrets your secrets haven't found", while the other starts with "Show me your insides, show me your secrets, show me what you desire, I can fake it" So you have this idea of her to figure him out organically, this craving for intimacy and being true to one another, while he wants to artificially shape the situation into what she'd like it to be through means that don't involve any vulnerability on his side. 'Paint me in trust, I'll be your best friend'' "I didn't want you, I wanna watch you change from a butterfly and into chains", how differently they see each other, how they want something entirely different from that relationship, how unilateral it is. "Lean for me and I'll fall back, you'll fit so nicely you'll keep me intact" and "Lay your heart into my perfect machine, I will show you what you wanted to see" as if she'll desperately hold on to whoever she finds and he agreed to play that role. Like she's searching for words of comfort and he'll just say whatever she wants to hear, not even knowing if he means it, leading to a toxically codependant situation. "Unzip your skin and let me have a see" and "I will never let you see what's beneath", again, vulnerability. He doesn't want anyone to get too close and that's the one thing she wants the most, the one thing he won't give her. "I want to give you your grin, so tell me you can't bear a room that I'm not in, call me the one, this night just can't end" and "Even you know this was all for nothing, just a sad show, just an ego, I suppose though, as far as I know we were both pretending, I suppose so, but what do I know" as if to say, "this meant everything to me", "We both know that's a lie". "I loved you", "No, you didn't. You loved the idea we made of me in your head." Like she wrote herself a fairy tale and cast him in the main role, and wasn't he the best actor in town? The very opposition of "I'm so human, we're just human" and the perfect machine, and how the music itself expresses it, how dodie's voice is so soft and organic while Dustin's so sharp and clear, and don't even get me started on how beautifully harmonized each element on those songs are and how they reflect all of this. _Just the vibes bro,, the vibes._ Given the difference in style, I'm probably the only one who noticed, so I had to share. I could go on, but to sum it up, I'm really glad I got out of that relationship.

From 2:20 to 2:45 are my absolute favorite moments of the video. The way Dodie lined up her breathing with the swells of the cello and violin. It's such a fine detail that made a huge difference to me. Then when she gets to "I'm so human" again in the minor key, I always get chills. The way her face says all we need to know about how the relationship is going. She knows it's not what she wanted nor what she could ever learn to love but she doesn't want to admit to it quite yet. 25 seconds of absolute beauty. Damn

I love everything about this video. It’s the most pure and emotional representation of my biggest struggle as an enneagram 4- making up who people are in my head before even getting to know someone. It’s a struggle to meet someone and involuntarily mold and shape him to be who I want him to be, regardless of whether he’s even close. It makes relationships impossible because it’s comfortable to live in fantasy. Just thank you dodie, thank you.

This reminds me of an idealized relationship. Like loving the idea of being in a relationship but not it in itself. You think you’re happy, but it’s just sort of empty. I always used to think this was a love song, and now it makes so much more sense. Almost like thinking you’re in love but you’re really not. I've had an experience like this a few years back, so watching the video really struck a chord. But seriously, this is absolute art.

I completely agree. Too often we end up disappointed because people act differently than we hope they would. We create different versions of them in our minds, forming unrealistic versions of them, are easy to get caught up in. People can end up falling for that idea, rather than who the person truly is. Real people are never perfect but they can surprise you in ways their imaginary self never could. For better or for worse, that's the way it is.

Why is dodie’s voice so calm, it’s so soft! I love the concept of her making a doll/mannequin to know what really makes to be truly human. To have a best friend, someone to love, to know the secrets and call them the one. In the end, she knew that they couldn’t really make her exactly human, maybe she got bored of them because they were all just the same. All in all this was so beautifully made :)))

Theory that the original husband died, so dodie has been spending years trying to replicate the man he used to be, but has to start all over when one tiny detail, or he’s not “human” enough. She’s in pain, but whenever a new sculpture is made, she’s momentarily overwhelmed with happiness because she thinks this can finally be the perfect one

Second of all as someone who's worn makeup on days my skin is the worst it's ever been and had people comment on how clear and nice my skin is, it absolutely can camoflauge that. On camera though they use softening filters. I can tell she's wearing a lot of makeup and faux lashes because her eyes don't normally look like that, and I think it's what stands out most from her appearance in this. Regardless she does look absolutely stunning

The way she gets passed ‘the honeymoon stage’ and the excitement of a new love only to realise the relationship is flawed, speaks to me. Irmin Baum the common depression of LGBT kids stems from people like you, who are so ignorant there's no hope of explaining to them why they're wrong

so right now i have a few little things i thought of through my first viewing of the video. - the warehouse is very worn down and empty, a symbol of the world dodie is living in mentally - the man is a perfect creation of what dodie wants in a partner but he’s unresponsive and robotic as she realises humans are too complex to simply make in your mind - the multiple bodies in the end signifies her persistence to keep trying to make her perfect partner - the man only responds to romantic gestures, a sign that dodie is only able to think of what her partner is able to do with her romantically rather than individual quirks (what makes him human)

I love your take on this. I also love how there’s a theme in dodie’s work about being so poetic about love that you sort of live relationships out before they even happen, and how, despite the alternative realities you can create, you’re still stuck as a human with feelings in a world with rules you don’t determine, and no control over the way others will respond. The only way to control what happens to you is to be alone, and this song just really shows you the vicious cycle of that isolation and the idyllic love you imagine while you’re trapped in it.
