I felt like seeing if my first digital camera still worked. So I found my old Canon Powershot A5 and tested it out. Matt produced this video.

I've been looking through a folder of photos my dad took with this thing in 1999. What really strikes me is that the image compression seems oddly inconsistent. Two photos of the same tree in the same lighting conditions, one is 90kb, the other is 400kb. Largest file size I've seen is 500kb, smallest is 60kb.

It's strange how a response to a video with Matt as the host of a video, feels more direct to the always behind the scenes person. Congrats Matt and Linn on the coming addition. I know for me it did not feel "real" till I was holding my first child. Good luck in the coming months, they're especially difficult. Take care of yourselves, and make sure you remember you're both in this together.

Great video Matt. I have to agree with you that Linn needs a break every now and then. I’m glad that you are able and willing to help her with the videos. I hope to see you again soon in one of these videos. Take care and tell her that I said hi. Thanks for sharing

Nothing cemented how old that camera was to me until I saw the VGA connector for it.

I've been a subscriber on Linn's other channel for a long time, and fairly new to this one. I believe this is the first time I've heard you, Matt. By all means, make a team effort or tag team. It helps us to get you know you better. Regards, Briz

I've got an old Nikon Coolpix 2000 camera that still works. 2 megapixels resolution. I bought that in 2002, and it was supplied with an 8 megabyte type 1 CF card. Back in 2002, I'd bought a 64 megabyte card, in order to give it a more practical capacity. Ten years later, I'd purchased a 1 gb type 1 CF card for it (actual capacity was 960 megabytes). It could read that card, but it could only format 400 megabytes of it. Back in the day they'd had to create physically incompatible CF type 2 cards, with micro hard drives, in order to increase the capacity. Suffering from barrel distortion and a limited ISO range, it's not a particularly practical camera by today's standards. As a matter of fact, I can take better stills with my camcorder equipment.

My first digical camera. Paid £600 for it, cost price, as I worked in a UK computer store. Loved that camera, felt amazing in the hand.

Just bought a digital camera from 2005, it works but I do not have an sd card that works for it .. Yes there is 1gb sd card and up available but 4mb is extremely difficult to find at least in my country. So i suppose this is something you have to keep in mind before buying an old digital camera.

You can easily use an old 5mp camera these days if you shoot in mostly daylight conditions. Few people understand that 5mp was plenty enough, even 3mp was enough to have a nice picture printed or seen on the desktop display. Back in the days, many brands made their best cameras when they reached around 5mp. Then they started boosting the mp and cut into lens and processing quality. The only time when it's worth buying a $400 camera today is if you shoot interior pictures and you don't want to use the flash.
