@@WilliamPlays117 That is not an easy question to answer. The words "pastured" and "grass fed" are up for interpretation. A farmer only has to give a cow a hand full of grass to be able to legally claim it was grass fed. A "pastured" chicken only has to have a small patch of grass/dirt to qualify as pastured. Your best bet is to find a farmer's market or a farmer who raises chickens or cattle. I found pastured eggs on Facebook Market, I can see how the chickens are raised for myself. You have to trust the source, I don't trust the food industry.

I have stage 3.... which I am sure has been influenced by my high sugar consumption and high blood pressure for the last 14 years..... I have seemed to be holding in stage 3 for those years which is a wonder since sugar has been my best friend...... I have now cut that out and am trying to stop any progression...... I have heard more protein is needed in the advanced stage of CKD but that in stage 3 you should cut it to keep stress from the kidneys..... I would love to hear from others who are in that stage that do a moderate protein diet and how it is working for them..... scared...just scared. The doc never even mentioned the CKD to me until a maybe 5 years ago and that was because I questioned the egfr on my bloodwork. After researching old bloodwork (I keep copies) I relized that it has been around since 2004 (I had a kidney stone... the only one I have ever had that I am aware of) and ever since been stage 3 ..... All bloodwork seems fine..... except creatitine... which is 1.09 (last test) and since I am a 66 year old white female..... it puts me at a EGFR of 50 or 53.... DEPENDING ON WHO IS CALCULATING IT.

I fully agree with you about the urea Dr Berry. I’m a UK-based paediatric registrar (senior resident in US parlance). In the context of your discussion regarding relatively high protein consumption, high urea tells me 2 things: 1: Your urea cycle is working perfectly (for non medics that’s the system that detoxifies the waste from unused protein/amino acids). 2: That being the case, you’re consuming more protein than you can use. (Again for the non-medics, the body has no means of storing amino acids, they’re either used for building tissues, providing energy or broken down and flushed out by the kidneys).

Just seen a UCLA nephrologist two days ago and she says too much animal protien is bad for kidneys and it would make sense to me because all of the oil and fat I feel could plug up the small blood vessels that allow your kidneys to function properly. What makes people think that the meat industry isnt behind protien preachers like this? Thank you for this information! Over the years, I have gotten very reluctant to share my food habits with other people and this is exactly the reason. Everyone thinks they are a doctor, and no matter how you eat, there is always someone who is very happy to bombard you with alarming news about how you are killing yourself. These days, my motto is "Keep your eyes on your own plate", and expect others to do the same. I have found that if I don't allow conversation about this topic, then I lead a more peaceful life.

Dr. Berry, thanks for addressing this. I have a kidney transplant and have been very stable for years. Praise the Lord. I did not have CKD, and I am not diabetic, but had Good Pasture's Disease ( an autoimmune disease for anyone else who may read this) which led to ESRD and dialysis. I need to lose about 15 pounds and have a friend who is on the keto diet. She is doing very well and has lost lots of weight. I love meat and thought I would give this a try. Sounds great to me!! I did not tell my kidney doctor I was going to do this. I know all of my 'BMP numbers and have labs checked every 6 months. I had a planned blood draw after eating keto for only about 2 weeks. My BUN jumped to 28 ( my normal below 20) , my creatinine jumped to 1.6 ( from my normal range of 1.0-1.2) ...and my GFR nose dived to 36, the lowest since my transplant 13+ years ago. And yes, my doctor has explained what all of the numbers mean and what affects them. The main one we were both concerned with was the GFR. At this point I did mention to my doctor that I was indeed eating a lot more protein. So...we plan a blood redraw for 2 weeks later. I modify my diet back to what I was eating...a little less protein with some carbs and fresh 'stuff'. As a rule I don't eat a lot of processed foods and cook most of my meals from scratch. At the redraw, my numbers were all back to my normal range....BUN below 20, Creatinine was 1.2...and the biggest change was my GFR... up 12 points to 48. And yes, I know that is low....but when properly hydrated (which is an ongoing challenge for me) I range between 50 and the normal 60+. We also did a protein urine check and that was absolutely perfect...no protein detected in the reading. We are planning redraws every 4 weeks for a few months to monitor my kidney. I know that as a transplant, my body will always be different and nothing is ever 'normal' again. I am a real meat eater, but full-on keto is not for me. Since that was the only change I made during that time frame, I know for certain that doing so affected my kidney function. That may not be the case for anyone else, but that was my experience, and I wanted to share that with you. I do enjoy your channel, thank you so much. Keep on educating and informing.

I don’t remember the medical diagnosed term for my condition but it was found that the filters of my kidneys are damage. I have been doing Keto for a year now and kidneys are doing their job well now! my doc did a urine test to check the protein level and it was great no protein was found in the urine! Aleluya! I keep my protein intake below 50gr a day and some days if I increased the carbs to 50gr I keep the protein below 25gr Thanks for the information and God bless!

My sister has some decreased kidney function for several years (in her early 50's). I think her doctor just does some blood tests from time to time. She also has migraines. I was talking to her about the migraines and trying the keto diet. She said she tried Atkins several years ago and developed a bladder infection. Also her doctor said Atkins was too much protein. I don't know if Atkins is keto or what exactly she ate back then, but I'm going to send her this video. I've been keto for about a year and never felt better. :)

Atkins is the father of Keto and carnivore diet, so not surprised on the poor kidney function with your sister. Sorry to hear that. If your eGFR is too low or BUN and creatine are too high, beware. Those are the signs of early kidney damage, whether or not these carnivore/Keto KZbin docs like to explain them all away.

I'd love a video dedicated to protein. It's a very confusing subject to someone just starting out, with how much protein to eat, how much will bring you out of ketosis, and how does that work with a carnivore diet? There are so many mixed messages online, especially with the way people refer to protein. Some refer to the actual protein content in the meat, others use it as a blanket term for meat in general, it all gets confusing.

First hand experience: I get regular blood work done for my autoimmune disease, and they also test my GFR and creatinine every time. On carnivore (zero carb) all my markers improved initially, inflammation was basically non existent. So my doctor was initially “sort of supportive” of my diet because my inflammation markers were so low and I seemed to be doing great at first. However after a few months of zero carb, every time I got bloodwork done my GFR declined and my creatinine was going up, to the point where my doctor got really worried and told me to ease up on the meat. So I did, I still eat lots of meat but I make sure that I also eat carbs and fat. Too much protein was definitely not good for my kidneys, because my GFR is almost back to normal now that I eat more balanced. Maybe it was just me but this was my experience.

Important! I just checked all the studies the doctor linked. Not one of them have people with existing kidney problems. If you have healthy kidneys protein is ok per these studies . If you have kidney problems there is nothing here that indicates protein will not do harm. I'm giving it a try and hope that inflammation coming down will allow the kidney to improve their function. When in a couple of months I have a blood test and it shows worsening kidney function I will have to modify what I'm eating.

Dr. Richard Bernstein says he saw that protein study from the 80’s, and says they came to the wrong conclusion. They did the study on diabetics, who also followed the recommended very high carb diet back in the day. It was the poorly controlled diabetes that caused the kidney damage, and not the protein. They only saw accelerated damage in those who were high protein with poorly controller diabetes, and had poor kidney function to begin with, so came to the conclusion that it must be the protein that caused the accelerated damage. He also said that protein could harm the kidneys if the patients had so poor kidney function that they needed dialysis, but not on self sufficient kidneys. :)

Always good, to get reassured about these things, thanks Doc 👍 That being said, I would urge people, who started Keto and maybe don’t feel quite as great as they expected, to track their food and experiment with different amounts of protein in their diet. I‘m one of those unlucky souls, who can’t eat unlimited protein on keto, unfortunately. It doesn’t quite throw me out of ketosis, but I sure don’t feel clearheaded and energetic, if I overdo it. For me, about 1g protein/kg bodyweight seems to be optimal, both for well being and weight loss (irrespective of caloric intake, it doesn’t just work better, when I‘m in a deficit but also when I‘m maintaining). Of course, 3-4 eggs and a small piece of meat every day, is already ‚a lot‘ by most people’s standards, just to keep things in perspective. I‘m talking about stuffing your face with huge amounts of meat in one meal...carnivore style. I would happily do that, trust me, but it just doesn’t make me feel good.

You know there is something bad. sometimes i felt like small cramps in the kidneys, wasnt painful, but is weird, and even when I lower the amount of protein, that symptoms were still there, also i had to pee like every 30 minutes, but as i told, my bloodwork was ok, while I went from 0 to 160mg in proteinuria. What helped me was: FIRST: stop the high protein, now im eating like 100/120 grams daily, but also, Im using the next compounds, Im gonna name some of thems in Spanish due Idk how to say in in english, but Im pretty sure you can found the english comercial names in google :) "riñosan": a herbal mixure, contains "horsetail", "flor de peña" and other herbs, but any herbal mixure for the kidneys who have horsetail herb should work. "enalapril at 5/10mg": search info about it, its pure magic to restore the kidneys, i think this was the 50% of the solution. 1 liter of cranberry juice daily: I drink 1L of "del valle antiox", its a local juice with 17% of cranberry concentrate and 9% of grape concentrate, with only 134 kcal per Liter, this sh*t its magic too, helped a lot. Astragalo: Pure chinesse magic for the kidneys, you can put 10 grams daily in your cranberry juice an drink it during the day. Half liter of serum daily: When you have problems with the kidneys, its REALLY probable that you have electrolit issues too, due a inflamated kidney can be leting escape some minerals and electrolits, and this its possibly one of the reasons I was making pee like crazy, when I started taking serum, I was able to control that better. :)

Thanks doctor for this great info. I really didn't know what to do and tried to switch to plant based protein, thinking it'll be less harmful. You've alleviated my concern. However, can you tell about high potassium and phosphorus foods like, bananas, avocados, seeds and nuts? Can they harm kidneys?

Body builders have been taking tons of protein throughout their careers. 4 to 5 times the amount that a normal person would take. If there was that much of a problem with protein they would be the 1st ones the find out.

Daddy Depends on your lifestyle. If you live like a couch potato then you don’t need that much protein just enough to get by. But if you’re very active or you’re older, especially if you’re older, you need more protein. More protein doesn’t mean excessive. You can live to be 100 but if you want quality of life two things are very important, your joints and your muscles. See Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. She worked with geriatric patients with Sarcopina.

It sounds like this diet (which I've been on for 3 weeks now and have lost 13#) might be beneficial it dealing with my stage 3 kidney failure due to Rhabdomyolysis from 2 should surgeries followed by 3 surgeries to replace both shoulders . The last one put me in the hospital for 7 days. The doc says he will not do anymore surgeries on me because of that. So now that my knees are shot I have to do something - loose weight I figure will help and CBD oil too. Thanks for getting me on the right track Doc. 😉 👍

The researchers, led by Dr Shalini Reddy from the University of Chicago, found that six weeks on a low carbohydrate, high protein diet increased the acid load to the kidneys, raising the risk of kidney stones. Animal protein has been shown to boost urinary excretion of oxalate, a compound that combines with calcium and other compounds to form kidney stones. The new study included 10 healthy adults aged 21 to 52 who ate their usual diet for two weeks, then a low carbohydrate, high protein diet for two weeks, and finally a diet that restricted carbohydrates only moderately for four weeks. The diets included three litres of fluid a day.

Hi Dr Berry, I just got back bloodwork and my bun/creatinine ratio was elevated, but both of them separately were in normal range. What would that indicate? I’ve been eating Keto for almost ten months now. I’m currently recovering from primary parathyroid disease, almost 4 months post op. As you can imagine I’ve had lots of bloodwork, so this was something unexpected since all my other numbers related to calcium were normal. Hoping it was maybe caused by dehydration. My sugar was 101 too, but I think I’m still really fighting insulin resistance from being under enormous stress. Watched your video on the Dawn Effect about that. Love your videos.

I listened to this guy and caused massive damage to my kidneys, I went from stage 2 to stage 4 CKD within 6 months by increased my protein intake to 120g per day. I followed a low carbs whole food diet but increased protein intake as advised in this video. Listen to him at your own peril.

But you can only assume the protein caused it, my brothers dropped worse than that and it had nothing to do with him changing diet, it just happens that way sometimes he went from 40 to 16 just this weekend

@@thilton24 no, I don’t assume. My nephrologist said so. Excessive protein intake pushes a lot more loads on the kidneys as noted in many scientific literature. Stop defending a quack doctor.

@@thilton24no it doesn’t just happen. This is why doctors are warning that these high protein diets can damage the kidneys. And this doctor, and Saldino and Baker all explain away bad numbers, like low eGFR, high creatine, high BUN, they love to explain them away, but those numbers are all due to consuming way too much protein. And show early stages of kidney failure. So no, it’s not a surprise, to anyone in medicine and no most people don’t just suddenly have kidney failure, but lots of people on carnivore and Keri often do.

"I'm not sure where this myth came from... " My mom was told by her MD that her creatinine levels were too high (yet still in the acceptable range) and basically scared her into eating less meat/protein. I guess that doesn't explain the origin of the myth, but considering people with credentials are saying it...
