Does All-In-One Paint ACTUALLY Work?!

Also answering the question - do I need to sand something before I paint it? Using a glossy piece of furniture, I tested:
- Painting directly over it without sanding, with a paint and primer in one.
- Painting directly over it without sanding, with primer then paint.
- Sanding and then painting over it, with a paint and primer in one.
- Sanding and then painting over it, with primer and then paint.
Which turned out the best? Check out the whole video to find out!

You really helped me with this video. My contractor gave me an estimate of $3000 to paint my kitchen cabinets using Promar. Forget it. I'll do it myself with heirloom traditions. Thanks again!

Great video. There are times when sanding is a huge pain, especially for certain shapes like trim. While sanding first is always best,, it's nice knowing I can skip it sometimes.

I find Traditional all in one Paint a WOUNDERFUL All In One Paint I am doing a very expensive real cowhide mid century couch with the cost about 15,000 and besides the tandem which was quite problem I’ll just decided to go ahead and order their primer easy Peezy and it turned out great! Thank you for your tutorial and I love All In One Paint. I happen to also buy the brushes that attach to your drill for cleaning heavy duty dirty wood and it’s so easy to do very good results squeaky clean and then are used my restore and I’ve had no problem with .grand babies toddles & children dogs, etc. Happy new year and may you be blessed with joy, peace, and Nappiness.

I must say Melissa, you look great! You don’t look like you’ve recently had a baby at all, much less are the mother of four!! That said, I did have a quick question about the sanded portions. You may have stated it in the video and I just missed it, and if so I apologize, but what grit were you using to sand before painting/priming? Also, how long did you sand as well?

I have a buddy that paints expensive houses in the Minnetonka area and he told me that primer is really just cheap paint. It isn't really necessary on most jobs unless you are really having a problem getting your paint to stick and hold.

Use Sherwin Williams Pro Block oil base primer and you wouldn't need to sand. Why on earth would anyone want to sand out a smooth surface varnish to begin with. In doing so you only expose the stain which eventually will bleed through. Latex based primers just to stand up to the task.

Good video. Just FYI, Killz 2 is a poor quality primer for this type of application. What would be needed on a laminate surface is an adhesion promoting primer. Killz 2 is ok for basic priming jobs like drywall or color changes.

We are in the midst of painting with the expensive all-in-one-paint you used in your demonstration. We’ve watched (and memorized) the technique tutorials prior to the first attempt at painting, including yours. House temp is 68° so not too hot or cold. Our paint does not apply smoothly, totally unlike your example or the examples we’ve watched. We’re finding it extremely frustrating as we follow step by step application (using their expensive brushes) only to have the paint puddle and run (when using a good amount of paint) and the paint starts to dry so quickly that the brush develops small bits of dried paint that gets transferred to the next section to be painted. The paint dries too quickly to use the dry foam brush to smooth the bubbles and the brush streaks never smooth out. We even resorted to taking off all the cabinet doors and have no better luck painting flat as the paint looks just terrible. As of now we’re rolling three coats of white on the insides and sanding them down to get rid of the bubble bumps. We’re looking at trying to find someone to spray the outside of the cabinet doors since they look so awful. Could the paint be off/bad? I do believe that may be but have yet to resolve the issue 😢

Whizz cabinet and door foam roller is from Lowe’s works well. Also, I learned that the bubbles are from putting too much paint on the surface. Just put enough for a thin coat with a clean brush and lightly roll out the brush marks with the Whizz brand roller.

Pros the world over use *oil* based KILZ for their projects. I cannot tell you how many times I give customers two different bids - because they believe that their old cabinets have to be sanded first, then primed, then painted. So much labor involved with sanding. With the red can oil based KILZ you can go straight onto non-sanded cabinets. The adhesion for that stuff is phenomenal. Spray on the KILZ then spray on the paint then you're done. Of course there are a few steps in between ;)
@cberg9480
@cberg9480 2 жыл бұрын
Is that the same for the product Stix? The person and Benjamin Moore said when doing cabinets I didn’t have to sand just use that primer.
@Doublethizzle
@Doublethizzle 2 жыл бұрын
@@cberg9480 I am not able to say, unfortunately. I use KILZ because I know it works. I can caution you, however. The employees behind paint desks do not always have the experience, so ... you know. Because trying to find oil based KILZ right now is like trying to hit the lottery, why not buy Stix and give it a test pass? If it doesn't work you know KILZ will.

I am not going to even watch this video since you are holding a promar 200 can. 😆😆😆😆 Here is some advice. GET A COPY OF THE DATA PAGES AND READ THE DIRECTIONS! #1) "Paint and primer in one" means there is more titatium dioxide /solids suspended in the resin emulsion we call paint. #2) Primer is not paint. There are different primers (and paints) for different jobs. As an example your surgeon could use a scapel or a box cutter. Both can cut but what works best for the task at hand? Or perhaps a framer could use a framing hammer or a ball-ping finishing hammer. Both are hammers, right? 🤷‍♀️ #3) ALL PAINTS AND ALL PRIMERS have DRY times and CURE times. Dry and cure times vary based on the applied mil thickness, type of product (oil/solvent/water) humidity, and amounts of pigments suspended in the product. As an example a white oil based enamel takes longer to dry and cure than a white waterbased enamel. While also a dark black or blue or red... heavy pigment load water based paint will take longer to dry and cure than a white waterbased paint. Scratch tests and scrub test will not work without proper product, application, and cure time. Fyi dry times may be 2 or 4 hours but cure times can be upwards of 2 weeks to a month. #4) You find MANY indepentant 3rd party tests done on many diffetent brands. Look for things like ACA, ASTM, KCMA certifications. #5) not all testing reads the same. Maybe the "scrub test" for Ben Moore results say "200 scrubs" and results for Sherwin Williams say "100 scrubs".... How were they counting a "scrub"? After following the manufacturer's suggested application and curing process The machine the passes the "scrub" brushes over the surface is suspended and passes back and forth like a swing. 1 company may count 1 stroke as 1 scrub while the other company may count 2 strokes as 1 scrub. So they are the same.... 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Anyway, I've had my head stuck in paint and construction... my whole life. The chemical coatings industry is insane once you delve into it for real. Goodluck!
