I would like to add that the Cursor that takes you to the fort during Render Unto Caesar at Cottonwood Cove will wear a radiation suit if you had released the radioactive waste onto the camp showing they are willing to use pre war suits. Which makes retrieving the diagnostics unit from the vault more likely.

If you play NCR side, you have to stop some Legion guy from winning. They are here and they have a plan. If you play Legion, YOU ARE that Legion guy. Killing Kimball is the best example. You bet the Legion has some guy going out there getting parts for the auto-doc

The thing is caesar owns probably a quarter of America and is one of the richest men in it. He could easily send for a surgeon to heal him. It's just far more convenient to use the courier because then he can keep everything hush hush within the Fort so he doesn't appear weak.

But, just like Stalin, he prosecuted and enslaved those capable enough to be surgeons. Siri could've been Caesar's personal doctor if she finished her Medicine school before the legion enslaved her. And if the legion goes out to random wasteland surgeons telling them Caesar is dying, the surgeons would just say "really? Good riddance" Caesar has few civilized Friends, and many foes.

I disagree, for a couple reasons. The principal issue is that the structure of New Vegas' story with each of the four main factions revolves around them REQUIRING the Courier's intervention for them to succeed. Indeed, if the player initiates quests that influence the ending slides but then never completes them, in practically every instance, the factions are unable to resolve said issues by successfully finding alternatives. It would be no more or less reasonable to, using this video's logic, make the case that perhaps Mr. House merely finds someone else to deal with Benny and retrive the Platinum Chip if the Courier never reveals themselves (the Courier is far from the only mercenary in the Mojave), or Benny himself is able to sneak into the Fort and upgrade the Securitrons if the Courier never forces his hand; and you can make just as many arguments against this. Yes, Caesar may send his forces to attempt to locate the Autodoc parts, and to go kidnap a capable physician. They may succeed, but they may not. Perhaps they are simply too slow and the illness progresses too far to be treated. Perhaps the doctor they find cannot perform the surgery, or is unwilling to do so, or sabotages the operation directly and spitefully kills Caesar. There's no more evidence that the Legion succeeds than evidence that the Legion tries and fails. As for the ending, and his death not being mentioned if the player doesn't cause it, there's a simpler way to explain it - it's not relevant. In fact, even if you DO kill Caesar, many characters (such as Mr. House and Boone) state that they do not believe his death will have any impact on the immediate outcome on the battle. And they're exactly right: unless you side with the Legion, the battle for Hoover Dam does not change at all whether you never visited Fortification Hill or you slaughtered every NPC inside. Lanius takes the title "Caesar" and is referred to as such, and he's always the one you confront at the end of the game. In fact, whether the major faction leaders live or die is almost totally irrelevant - Kimball, Oliver, Lanius (outside some Legion endings), Benny, etc can live or die and nothing changes; Mr. House is the only one that matters, and that's only because he IS his faction, so he obviously can't die if you side with him, and every other ending requires you kill him. That's not to say your perspective is wrong, I think it's reasonable to envision a Courier-less Mojave where Caesar lives, I just think that the evidence to support that being the most likely outcome is slim and at odds with the themes of NV and Fallout as a whole - if you ask me, the most likely outcome in a scenario where the Courier dies and the deadlock of the war is never broken, is that the Mojave dies with them, and in the ashes of the war, no one will be left to care about the Legion or the NCR or Mr. House, just the same as happened to the old world.

Being the devils advocate; 9:38 using Siri as an example is a bad idea. The Fort is the Legions front holding their leader and its staffed with someone that uses healing powder (wastefully mind you, The Courier can give her some pointers) as the main way to heal soldiers who no doubt have been injured in battle. She's apparently the best the Legion can staff in their most important front, I just don't think Caesar has any professional doctors in his lands, keep in mind Caesars Lands have been extremely savaged for the longest time according to Raul and getting training as a doctor would be extremely hard to obtain / come by.

I always felt it odd that so many KZbinrs (and others) assume that Caesar dies without the Courier's help. Caesar is prideful, but not stupid. He has access to a wealth of knowledge and human resources, he's not going to just let himself die because he doesn't want to admit that there is a problem. EDIT: I'm wondering what mods you use to alter Caesar's appearance? I like them better than vanilla.

I'll counter this, there are wealthy warlords in real life that can't obtain top medical treatment (with the exceptions of some CIA involvements) expert surgeons generally don't want to go into the home of a dangerous warlords known for ruthlessness in some third world country and treat him despite the pay being more then generous, not to mention you don't know if they're spies or will use the opportunity to assassinate Caesar which no doubt a lot of people might do just out of tribal revenge or disagreements with the legions ethics like slavery. There towns in the legions with doctors that are civilized but they live in a different world then the legion (cut content) and said towns might have a problem with slavery or as Raul stated, were extremely savage before the Legion took over and medical skills were probably undeveloped. Caesar has conquered brotherhood of steel bunkers, the Brotherhood of Steel have thee most advanced medicine out there in the wasteland yet Caesar still hasn't been able to cox Brotherhood slaves into treating him since the BOS is probably too dogmatic to not try.. The tribals Caesar has conquered just might not be medically advanced enough and the brotherhood / few civilized towns under Caesar can't be trusted with treating Caesar. What gets me more is that I don't understand why Caesar have a heir or at least groomed / mentored someone incase he died.

it feels more probable that given how brain cancer can be such a serious medical condition to us we tend to think that caeser couldnt survive without us getting the medical ai of the mojave, also going along with that given the legions perception by most regarding their views on tech, i imagine most dont think the legionhas the medical technology to save caeser without outside help, like the courier. wether its right or not i still think the legion is doomed to a fate similar to other dictator ships when caeser does die, regardless of brain tumor or not he still is quite old (at 55 i think maybe 56) still plenty of years to make moves should he survive, it just feels more so that the legion is doomed without reform and its a uncertainty if caeser will enact needed reforms to preserve himself (similar to what house did) or to setup the nessecary politcal and nation structure for a stable line of succession to form.

@@CyberController- True, Stalin is a prime example of that. He had personal physicians executed due to his paranoia, and in the end, he was using quack medicine to treat his ailments. I think that Caesar is in a different position than Stalin, though. Caesar has an army of loyal slave-warriors who worship him as the son of a god, and among them is an order of spies that would bring him anything/anyone he desires without question. If the Courier had not shown promise as a potential personal physician, I think that Caesar would have had men secretly scouring the lands for treatments throughout the game.

It will be interesting to see how the Legion would potentially exist without Caesar. While Lanius takes over if the Player kills Caesar, that could just be seen as a war time thing. Personally, I think Lucius or Vulpes would be a better Caesar. Maybe even a civil war would break out between those vying to take Caesar's place, as so often happened to the Roman Emperors. I would guess civil war would become inevitable. Some of your potential dialogue with Lanius suggests he could lose the east while trying to take the west. Hiting at other ranking officers who aspire to take the throne. Suggesting he is not someone who could rule through respect, only by fear. Lanius also does not hide his contempt of Vulpes very well, and Vulpes in turn speaks of Lanius as a successor as a great setback. I doubt that he's referring to the battle of Hoover Dam, but rather his own prospects of surviving under a man who sees his methods as 'dishonourable'. And if Vulpes were backed into a corner thinking he'll die, he might just take the frumentari and try to initiate a civil war alongside the eastern rebels who are thinking of overthrowing Lanius. At worst, he still dies. At best, it's Lanius who dies and Vulpes can call himself the new Caesar. Caesar himself also does not seem to have intended for Lanius to succeed him. He's a commander who he can trust to seize Hoover Dam, but his plan was always to establish New Vegas as his new capital and his Rome. To transfer the loyalty of the Legion to himself personally onto his new Rome. He also grooms the Courier into becoming a hero to the Legion. Someone they look up to for leadership after Caesar. He has the Courier's visage minted on new coins distributed after he helps win the Battle of Hoover Dam. That is an honour he wouldn't even grant Lanius, despite his striking mask. Caesar would not tolerate another person to gain such a visible place on the Legion's currency if he did not intend to have the Courier replace him. But in a scenario where the Courier dies, and Caesar inevitably dies, he has no one to lead his Legion. He says it himself that Lanius is not the man he'd pick, only the one he has available. He can probably see the pitfalls ahead that doomed the Roman Empire, which already came close to a perilous decline before Vespasian, and entered a freefal because of Theodosius.

When Stalin suffered a stroke in his office, his guards were too scared to enter and see what was wrong. When he was found the next day by his maid, just barely alive, his cabinet members were too scared to bring in any doctors, as he'd declared many of Moscow's best doctors enemies of the state. Stalin died, soaked in his own p**s and sh*t, because of the fear he struck in everyone around him. Caesar, without the Courier, would suffer the same fate.

It'd be a sweet story if Caesar sent some legionaires to the vault, they retrieve the auto-doc and Caesar lives. He honors them and promotes them, but the radiation turns them into ghouls. And Caesar is forced to kick them out of the legion. A bitter-sweet tale to tell.

I think he would send the frumentati without a doubt, the biggest concern would be going to the Vault without being intercepted by NCR. The worst case scenario isn't if the legion failed to reach the vault, but if they reached it, were spotted, a squad called reinforcements, then as they were leaving opened fire on the legion. They wouldn't know why the legion wanted that part but they would not let them have it, and getting it from McCarran would be one hell of a task, Ergo it makes sense to send someone id disguise, someone who wouldn't attract the attention of a soldier and could handle themselves with some feral ghouls. I admit though, I find it somewhat funny of an idea that after taking Doc Usanagi Caesar tells he to put in some implants while he's under.

Yes. The courier can absolutely knee-cap the Legions position before the battle. If he sides with any of the factions and does their quest line all the way through but doesn’t participate in the battle, nothing will change for the faction he sided with. Except maybe Oliver won’t get thrown off the dam lol

10:48 stupid question. But what’s to stop the captured doctor or even one that appears willing from simply botching the surgery? I imagine most doctors are smart enough to get the legionaries to understand the risk of surgery of this kind and once that’s done, all they’d have to do is to botch the right area and Caesar gets to meet to the real Caesar.

Thats a great question! As for in game, we can assume there must be a reason seeing as how Arcade Gannon doesn’t botch the surgery despite despising Caesar. Although, this is more of a gameplay mechanic in my opinion. The most likely reason would be fear. A lot of people assume that a doctor would kill Caesar if given the opportunity, but forget just how intimidating the Legion is to the wastelanders in game. I certainly wouldn’t want to cross a hyper-aggressive faction of soldiers that *potentially* just kidnapped me to save their god kings life and regularly crucifies people who disobey them. I think it’s also fair to point out that the Legion would absolutely dispatch anyone who let Caesar die. So the courier surviving despite (intentionally or unintentionally) botching the surgery is almost definitely a gameplay mechanic and not indicative of what would realistically happen, especially to a doctor who hadn’t proven useful to the Legion as a warrior yet (as the courier has in this point in the quest line).

@@theneocypher Yeah I suppose your right and history shows even if someone orders for mercy(which from what little I know about Fallout Caesar, isn’t likely to be given), the men they leave behind won’t necessarily follow the last order. Richard the lionheart ordered that the boy who shot him with a crossbow bolt be treated with clemency but as soon as Richard was dead, his men beat the boy to death. I will say I don’t like what I’ve heard about the legion, the romans were a lot of things but this idea they don’t equip their people with the best weapons available sounds like someone who read roman history from a book with over half the pages missing. The romans were once outdone by a Germanic army that used the most basic weapons, a club of wood but that was because the Germanic tribes were some of the best guerrilla fighters of their day and they didn’t want their weapons to reflect light. Romans came to battle with some of the best military hardware(didn’t always work, I mean who invades Britain in February with a catapult that doesn’t work in the rain? The romans apparently) but they were technologically superior to all enemies they fought(well except for one Greek city but they had Archimedes so that’s an exception). The legion’s tactics of rushing the enemy in a swarm of fighters is more equivalent to the ancient celts and their tactics(I find it weird that Caesar had a book of letters written by the real Caesar during his campaign in Gaul but he seems more inspired by the tactics of Vercingetorix….just saying)

Legion while dressed in the Roman clothes is at the end a faction of post-apocalypse survivors and a restart to humanity as envisioned by Caesar. With how ravaged Arizona was by raiders and hostile wildlife, Legion simply has no means of combatting the industrial might of the NCR and their use of recruits is also their method of dealing with hostile tribes that were forced into service. A method that served them well in: a)Weeding out the weak from the newly-conquered manpower pools b)Keeping their survivor logistics manageable c)Ensuring no rebellion or raiders in legion lands, given they just grabbed all the defeated hostile tribals and threw them against the enemy. True Legionnaires, that is Primes and Veterans are better equipped than average NCR Trooper. Recruits are mere initiates, that are very well meant to die in droves, to let the true legion soldiers arise. Finally you do not understand that Legion has abandoned the strategy of human-wave tactics, still used by NCR obsessed with their superior firepower, ever since getting their shit kicked in at Hoover Dam, the first time they tried to conquer it. While larp of Hastati, Principes and Triarii served them well in Arizona, it no longer did and as such Legion has completely remade its strategy and tactics to combat the NCR. Legion now, relies heavily on subterfurge, guerilla warfare, ambushes and tricks, all that to great effect. They do not form Testudo's like the Romans do, that would be backwards strategy, and if anything by not emulating the Romans, Legion does the most Roman thing of all through the Roman states 2200 years existence... It adapts. In fact legion strategies and tactics might be among the most modern and innovative in fallout universe. Nelson, Cottonwood Cove, Searchlight, Nipton, Ranger Station Charlie, Frumentarii filling the NCR ranks and feeding intel to legion and their allies, orchestrating ambushes, all serve an example to newly found, Legion's strategic and tactical might. Strategic and tactical might that allows the legion to defeat the better equipped NCR troops, with relatively low casaulties, while relying on cannon fodder.

They didn’t always treat them nicely but a Roman legionary was not trained for years just to be thrown away. Even during Rome’s worst defeats like at Canae or the loss of the 9th legion, they never threw the lives of their soldiers away because you train a soldier for years and then use him for cannon fodder?! That’s illogical! It’s stupid! The celts may have done that but they were a warrior culture that believed in reincarnation! Subterfuge, guerrilla warfare, ambushes and tricks are all standard, the NCR’s failings come from not allowing their forces to take productive measures. If they were smart they’d allow the NCR rangers to become like the American Sharpshooters of the American war of independence, in that war America did something brilliant but simple and the NCR originally sounds like they did the same but haven’t kept doing it, taking out the legion’s leadership by sniping them. If the NCR rangers were allowed to hunt like that, Caser would be dead within days and same for every other legion leader. The legion burning the other side of the river, poisoning water and other atrocities may seem clever but they’re only clever in the short term. What long term advantage exists? NONE! You can get Spartacus to admit it! And that’s true! The legions tactics are ineffective and only advantageous on a short term basis! What’s the point of that?! The NCR are incompetently led but all it’d take to change that is to put someone with half a brain in charge and then the legion would fall over like toy soldiers! When the legion attacks a settlement on the NCR’s side the fact they’ve gone unmolested is proof not of the legion’s brilliance but of the NCR’s leadership’s baffling incompetence! A legion unit Vs one NCR ranger should be an easy win for the ranger, an NCR ranger should be like the White Death of WW2, a Finnish marksman who the Russians grew to fear because he took out entire units on his own! They even tried firing artillery at him, they hit him but it didn’t kill him. A sniper is deadly and the legion are lucky the rangers haven’t been given free reign to hunt them because if they were to be given the orders to hunt the legion, the legion would be scared to even leave their tents to take a piss. The legion are lucky, not brilliant.

@@andrewobrien8325 Legion learned from its mistakes and it does not put its commanders in easy position to be shot at and be taken off by NCR sharpshooters with additionaly handing out far more lower officer ranks than they used to before so that there is always a chain of command to follow, even in face of death of superior officer. Decanii are practically leadong whats a fireteam. Legion did not have it before the first battle and as such deaths of officers lead to confusion amongst the ranks. That is not anymore the case. Taking out Centurions and Decanii is no longer as reliable of a tactic as it used to be. I also fail to see the supposed NCR's brilliance in the first battle. Here you will agree with me if you are true to your words... Had Graham not chased off after NCR seeking total victory and instead merely secured the dam, as was Caesar's wish, NCR would give up the dam with little fight. But even with Graham pursuing them to Boulder City, they had to blow up their entire CITY to stop a legion offensive. Yes NCR is incompetent beyond doubt, but it is legion's own actions that thrive on the said incompetence by filling NCR ranks with agents, creating ambushes, messing with supplies, winning a war of attrition, performing surgical strikes. To exploit incompetence you need some skill of your own. Do you know how many Legionnaires were lost in wiping out the Ranger Station Charlie with those rwngers you mention ? None. For their use of recruits as cannon fodder legion tactics are smart enough to minimize casaulties they receive and maximizing the casaulties received by enemy. Legion is not like Celts. They are far more ingenious... More like VietCong or Talibans in their actions.

Hey cool video I enjoyed on your take of Cesar’s death but if I may ask. Besides the esthetics and titles, do you think that them winning the Mojave would make them go out less like the actual Roman’s and more like the Greeks, (who I feel like share a more similar way of conquering to ceasars legion than the actual Roman’s.) in which when it eventually dissolves itself into multiple states and instead of staying as raiders they kind of adapt to the cultures of the local regions just being the diplomatic elite, like maybe some frumentari would act like the leaders of the families in new Vegas after taking them over. Or northern legion warlords act more like the eighties or even new Canaanite’s? I have thought of it a lot and it seemed more realistically to be more like them going like a mongol or Alexander the Great way of their empires where they were short lived compared to their counterparts. But still had a drastic and longing impact for millennia to come.

Great question! I’m going to have to let this one cook to come to a more coherent idea. As of right now, due to the intention that they were written with, I think they would end up a lot like the historical Romans, who’s presiding culture was a melting pot, and individual areas had their own customs. Much like you are saying, but a little more romanified.

I have over 100 texture mods installed to create this look 😬 but! I use 3 that are pretty noticeable. “We Are Legion - Dragbody” for legion armors and faces, “Fallout character overhaul” for everyone else’s face, and “Poco Bueno textures” for the random things in the wasteland.

Caesar could live for a decade or more that still doesn’t means that he will not die, considering how utterly ruthless the wasteland is, it will be certain that he will die and with his death his Legion will die with him. Caesar was playing glorified raider with his cosplaying tribals that failed to realize that the Roman Empire lasted as long as it did was because they were a proper civilization with a proper legal and organized government which didn’t really need its head of state constantly in its capital. He has no successor who could properly understand his dream for his Legion and like his beloved Roman Empire it will fractured into civil wars and forever destroy his dream of a restored Roman Empire, so really if he recruit the Courier he may be the only person who could continue his dreams of his Legion becoming a proper government.

I respectfully have to disagree with this. I think Caesar would most likely die without courier intervention, and even if he didn't I don't think he'd live long or even be awake as he'd either be in a coma or the surgery wouldn't be good enough. I also think there's a high chance that if they got a surgeon from the followers that they would just assassinate Caesar during surgery. I also don't think any of the slaves they have could even come close to performing the operation no matter how skilled in medicine they are because i doubt the legion would let them practice and, once again, would a slave not just assassinate caesar? And while yes, Vault 34 does have an autodoc that they can use to repair their own, not only would they have to make the long trek there, survive any possible NCR soldier attacks if they aren't disguised, and if they ARE disguised then their party wouldn't be nearly big enough (at least in my opinion) to deal with the horde of golden geckos outside the vault, not to mention the ghouls AND the radiation AND the same trek back but this time with the autodoc parts weighing them down or possibly exposing their cover of disguise. This is also under the assumption that Caesar would for some reason let his soldiers use chems (which admittedly would be in character for his selfish ass.) Caesar is a smart and resourceful man but he's not a god and he can't just make the impossible happen. The survival rate for a brain tumor in ages over 40 is about 20% and that's accounting for modern medicine and if it's caught at a relatively early stage. Caesar is 55 and has had this tumor for a decently long period of time and hasn't done anything about it but somehow once he's on his death bed he will miraculously find a way in the dirty and unclean wasteland with not that many medical professionals around let alone any that would even want to help the man. If that all isn't enough evidence then here's a fun fact that might've influenced the devs idea about how this would go. Julius Caesar died at 56, roughly the same age as Caesar. If you wanna argue that that's a coincidence or shouldn't influence how the story go I understand, but on top of all the other struggles they would have to go through, this just seems like a fitting end for the man who is literally imitating the Roman Empire. This comment is in no way disrespectful, I understand why people would think that Caesar would be able to save himself and the evidence you brought up is fairly sound, I just personally don't see it as a possibility.

There are several doctors accesable, ignoring the old morman fort for a moment that has multiple followers going back and forth there is Dr Usagani who performs cybernetic surgery in the outskirts. The legion could man here easily and everyone knows where her clinic is
