My story? I weighed 78kg the months before my battle with advanced stage 4 cancer. The treatments caused me to gain weight and at peak, 123kg!! Years later I survived my cancer and am down to 85kg in January 2021. Problem is during this battle with cancer I lost ~50% of my muscle mass. So for the last year (2021) I started using Pepsi Zero 33cl about every other day. Today January 1, 2022 I weighed in at 78kg. I personally have noticed that if I drink one of these zero calorie beverages I usually don’t have any appetite for food for 4-5 hours. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.

Diet soda has helped me lose 70 pounds this year. During quarantine one of my goals was to lose 30 pounds but I ruptured my hamstring May of 2020. During my recovery time I discovered Greg Doucette and did as much research as I could and Greg said diet soda is fine so I gave it a shot. I was able to start running again this past February and I started at 264. I'm now down to 194 and diet soda has been a huge contributor because it's kept me from wanting sweets. At the end of the day weight loss really is just a math equation and the amount I run has been the bigger reason why I've lost the weight but diet soda really has been a game changer.

I will say that I've tried switching to died sodas as a first step to multiple unsuccessful diets, and I have been drinking copious amounts of diet sodas (together with lots of coffee, tea, and carbonated water) in this most recent diet losing 135+ lbs in 10 months. I haven't reached my goal weight yet so I'll have to report back if I can maintain the loss, but I believe switching to diet sodas was a necessary but not sufficient precondition to getting into a diet with a deficit that still still keeps my hunger from getting out of control. The other things that worked in combination: - I started eating at least 1 lb of vegetables every day, usually just boiling some carrots, onion, garlic, turnip, cabbage, peas, and habaneros - I started eating lots of protein (between 80 and 160g of protein per day) - drank some metamucil fibre every morning (bloats my stomach and makes me feel full longer) - drank 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar with cup of water after a meal maybe every other day (blunts my hunger after a meal) - I didn't actually go to the gym for the first 6 months, maybe a 30 min hike every other day

I never thought diet soda made me fat. I quit drinking it after about 35-40 years of Tab, Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Mtn Dew, Diet Coke because I was concerned about the possible effects on gut health and overall health. It was also about cutting out carbonation and caffeine. I would consume around a gallon of diet pop a day, so I realize I'm probably an outlier on the consumption curve...which is also part of why I figured it was better to eliminate it. Yes, I theoretically could have cut back, but that doesn't really work for me. I still think diet pop is better for you than drinking sugar pop (calories). ymmv

Literally 2 months ago I was 6'5" tall and 415 pounds. I was an over the road driver with high cholesterol/high blood pressure. And a heavy smoker. In 2 months, I changed to diet soda, regular portions of food, no seconds. I have lost over 50 lbs. It is not just about changing your drinks, it's changing your diet. Truth is, reducing your intake of sugar, and salt and eating normal portions instead of over eating will shed the pounds. Being active also helps. Reducing how much I eat, caused my stomach to shrink. So it no longer takes as much food to get full. 🙃 I'm happy with my diet but I'm not there yet. My goal is 285 lbs. I'm still 360.

Of all the diet colas, for 24oz you get at most 110mg of caffeine (Mountain Dew), while diet Pepsi has 72mg and diet Coke 92mg. That's less than a 12oz coffee. That wouldn't make a huge impact on appetite.

Diet sodas are fine! The people who believe that diet sodas DON'T make you fat, are generally the people who KNOW that carbs make you gain weight! Its normally the 'carbs don't make you fat' people that also believe that diet soda DOES make you fat! Fucked up logic right there! Is there any validity to what that the fake sugar disrupts your gut biome? Haven't seen or heard any research one way or the other on this.

I think it comes down to portion sizes if you drink 2 diet sodas that’s better then drinking a 12 pack in 1 sitting.

Artificial sweeteners help me so much. I use them in coffee, homemade drinks, and sugar free gum.

Layne, this might be a stupid question, but how does soda in general affect PH balance? My friend swears that pop kills his gut in the sense he will want to drink Alkaline water to calm it down. In other words he feels it is to acidic for him.

Wait...did they control for caffeine? Could that also help explain this outcome?

Layne-Could it be the caffeine in the diet soda potentially providing an appetite suppressing effect?

If you can have diet soda as part of a sensible diet, I am pretty sure that's harmless. If you have to have at least one everyday 'cause you're hooked on the taste but feel like you need a bag of chips or a pizza along with it to fully enjoy, that's where it could go sideways for weight management. But that's not the soda's fault, it's the brain wiring poor choices into habit.

I only drink diet soda, 6-8 liters every day for the last 20 years. I’ve always been around 150lbs at 6ft tall. I’m also a ultra endurance runner, up to 100 mile races. And you’re right the fake sugar (I use in everything) makes me not want things with real sugar. The whole diet thing is bad for you in BS 🤷♂️

I used to drink 4- 5 cans of regular soda daily (terrible, I know), but I dropped to 1- 2 cans daily and did intermittent fasting. My weight dropped from 240 lbs to 190 lbs in about 6- 8 months, but I've been stuck at 190 ever since. I mostly drink water and tea now, but I still crave soda. I'm going to switch to Dr. Pepper Zero and see if that helps me lose my last 50 lbs (along with my daily walks of 10,000 steps and some lifting).

Diet soda are having caffeine also help as a preworkout. I always have coffee as preworkout prior to my cardio. Yes, I agree that artificial sweeteners fix my sugar cravings. I get it from my protein shake.
