Fun fact, before becoming Doom's composer, Bobby Prince was certified as a lawyer in 1980, so when Id Software wanted him to compose a whole bunch of metal soundtracks for the game, he emulated a bunch of songs from Metallica, Pantera, Alice in Chains, AC/DC, and Slayer, and changed them just enough so Id couldn't be sued for copyright infringement. So Master of Puppets being played on an 8 string is like Doom and Metallica coming full circle.

The guitar tone was solid but for all the riffs (except Korn's Here to Stay - which was already pretty low, Untouchables was one of the better produced low tuned recordings, along with Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve and Crowbar's Oddfellows Rest) but I couldn't help but feel like I was listening to The Violent Sleep of Reason. Reduce bass notes as much as possible, mid either at 0-10, or at 70-88, with no in between, cut at 80 and 8000hz, and Tube Screamer pedal with 50 tone 0 drive - I usually dont preach about pedals for rhythm, but here it would be real neccesary, just like the other steps. Taken from Keyan Houshmand's tone tutorial and my personal experience with baritone guitar. PS: And turn up gain to around 60-70, maybe even 80, because at low notes (Especially E1 and lower) gain reduction is actually insane

How to make anything sound like meshuggah: play it on an 8 string
@legendmaker6942 ай бұрын
The few old-school metal riffs in this selection sound unrecognizable and lost basically all of their appeal and identity, at least to my ears. "PainKiller" and "Master of Puppets" especially, although "One" doesn't suffer as much. The riffs that were already groove metal to begin with, or close to that, sound really close to the originals, be it Pantera, RATM or Korn. Not sure what NickelBack even did on this list, and I'm not familiar with this particular rock riff of theirs, but since it was played quite high in standard tuning, this treatment simply makes it sound like a lower riff but still within what's available in standard tuning. All in all, fun experiment to make and it was interesting to check, but the answer seems to be a resounding nope as far as I'm concerned.

Korn was playing modern prog metal 20 years ago, tuning them down even further kinda defeats the purpose lol. Also, what makes the guitars sound so crunchy for Korn is the bass but if the lead is already below the point where you can distinguish notes the bass can't help and it sounds empty. Just like Bulls on parade and Walk and Master of Puppets. The only One (hah, get it?) that sounded okay was One. What makes all those riffs from ye olden times is the melody and tuning down to the point where it's just rumbly noise loses that part.

An 8 string is on my list, but I can't really decide which one. Solar would be cool because of the evertune, which really helps with low tunings, but I think I would use the guitar too little to justify the price. So I looked into cheaper alternatives and since I recently got a cheap Les Paul style guitar from Cort, which is great after a good setup, I kinda think this is what I should go for. They have 8 strings as well and really affordable. And let's be honest, with the indonesian made stuff, you basically get a Cort or Samick anyway, becaue these are the 2 companies that build almost everything there for every big brand.
