This is 100% true. The human psyche is a huge gray area rather than black and white. It’s very complicated and doesn’t always have a definitive answer. One thing I know for sure is that the abusive people are always the ones who need the most help. People aren’t born cruel monsters, they’re turned into them by their life experiences and the people who’ve influenced them.

@@spinestealer8129 I'm glad to find others who also see people in this sort of light, oftentimes people just assume that I'm "trying to be too nice" or that I'm "defending" the ab*ser if I mention this sort of thing to them. In which case, they aren't exactly right because I know that I don't support their actions, but just because I think their actions make them an a*s doesn't mean that I won't acknowledge the bad things or ignorant environment that causes them to become/get normalized to these sort of things. :// People really need to know that choices and thinking is nOT dichotomous (like you said), and even if some people are too far deep to be "saved" doesn't mean that I can't feel bad that there are things that cause people to be this way, and lastly there is a difference between acknowledging the reasons behind someone's actions vs. using it as a full on excuse to justify a bad act. (also sorry for the long reply lmao, i just wished more people learned to see things this way)

I agree, but also, isn't this just general about trolling? I always saw trolling as something people do when they can't get the positive attention they need, they go for negative attention. Also it puts them in control of their social issues "Oh I /wanted/ you to hate me, my plan worked perfectly!" Sad either way

I do think Gabbie is going through something. Personally, I have a hard time rooting for Gabbie because of what she did to Jessi Smiles, her recent tweet where she "reminisced" about something horrible that happened to someone else, and the hate she seems to be sending to women (feels like internalized misogyny) and Trisha (no one deserves to be misgendered). Imo, this started because Rachel Oates made a book a year ago that Gabbie felt mocked her book. She sent a lot of hate to Rachel, and her instagram was taken down because Gabbie's fans mass-reported it. While other creators may have shit on Gabbie's book, Rachel was always very respectful and critiqued it (like she does other books), and did not say shit like "haha, this is bad, Gabbie dumb." I also found a comment interesting - that if Gabbie was doing all of this for attention, why didn't she just expose her treatment in the VS? And I agree. That would have gotten her a lot of support and attention. Her Tik Toks might be trolling, but overall, I think she is not well. However, she should not be lashing out at others, demeaning women, misgendering people, making SA situations about her, and blaming it all on her ADHD. She also still needs to apologize to Jessi.
@KuncanDastner

What she did to Jessi absolutely needs addressing, I totally agree. I think Gabbie has a knack of feeling victimized by people (must've started from vine, likely) and she takes that mentality into every confrontation she gets into. I hope she's able to improve and recover but right now I don't know what she's doing

Sadly, Gabbie is an easy person to pile on because she’s a tryhard and she reacts terribly to criticism, and a lot of people take advantage of that. She doesn’t deserve a tenth of the hate she’s gotten, but she also seems to just be an unpleasant, narcissistic person who loves attention - when all she should be doing for her own sake is get out of the public eye. And then apologize to everyone she’s acted awfully towards. I always come back to that whole thing with Rachel Oates where she rambled on about how she’s « actually honored » that Rachel « hates » her poetry because Rachel also « hated » Bo Burnham’s poetry (blatantly untrue), it was so embarrassing to watch ; it painfully reeked of insecurity. That’s how all of her attempts to appear ~detached look to me.

Ok but I don't believe a word of what she says about the trolling. She was clearly trying something, thought she was being edgy or enjoyed the attention she got from people thinking she needed help, but then tried to backtrack. I also have it and that was horrible.. she’s adding to the stigma of ADHD. I’m tired of awful people using it as an excuse for their bad behavior. And honestly with how much she drilled it in like “i do this because of adhd, I’m so wacky cuz of adhd, omg lol my adhd” it feels like she doesn’t even truly have it and that was a lie or something.. I honesly really don't like how she uses it as an excuse and tries to explain everything with it cuz then it seams like ppl with ADHD are incapable of control themselves and just act immaturely like her, when the fact is that that isn't the truth. again adhd can present differently in other people its sad how people cannot just except that mental illness is individual and should not be grouped together the whole point of different mental disorders is so that professionals can assign treatments better people are very different even if they have the same disorder people also need to be aware that disorders can make people do terrible things this is the reality of mental health i personally have seen people with disorders manipulative abuse or generally just be aggressive through no fault of their own i mean you just need to take a look at high security mental hospitals to have an idea of what a mental disorder can make a person do with all that in mind i would say gabbie is quite normal for what i have seen she hasn't really don anything too bad from my perspective and from what i personally have seen she isn't the worst by a long shot . i understand how its hard to grasp the idea that someone could just be terrible based on a mental illness as humans we just want to believe she is the bad one, as it terrifies us to believe people could just snap like that or that its not these peoples fault, this belief isn't exactly logical in when you look at the evidence but it makes sense emotionally and comforts us somewhat i do hope people grow out of this though.

“It’s nice to feel in control” makes me think that it IS a bad mental health spiral. The videos and tweets might be performative, but that doesn’t negate them completely. I think she’s trying to control the hate she’s getting, she’s figuring that since everybody is hating her anyways, she might as well go all out so she can at least control the hate she gets. That’s just my opinion, though, but I remember the stuff that I’d do just to feel in control when I was younger, and while it was more harmful to myself vs lashing out, I do relate to the feeling of wanting that control. My thought process was if everyone was going to hurt me, I might as well control how I was hurt, which is similar if the inverse of what I think Gabbie’s thought processes is. The truth is, I’ve always related to Gabbie in the worse way. I feel like she reflects the worst parts of myself back at me. I also get defensive with my art, though I’m trying to work on that, and don’t take criticism very well. I used to feel out of control and try to exert some sort of it in unhealthy ways. I’ve been careless with my words before. Sure, a lot of this was when I was younger, when I was a child, but I still struggle with a lot of it. But I’m also upset with her, because she’s crossed so many lines. I would have felt hurt at Rachel’s review, too, I will admit. I’m not good at taking criticism because I put a piece of myself in every piece I do. But I wouldn’t have attacked her so viscerally. Because, even if it hurt, Rachel was perfectly kind in her review. It was constructive criticism, unlike a LOT of videos I’ve seen on Gabbie Hanna’s poetry. She tried to be fair and even. And I will admit, I’ve watched Rachel for a while now, so I do have a parasocial relationship with her that might make me overly defensive or hurt by Gabbie’s remarks. Calling her a narcissist, a bitch, abusive, a harrasser....It just felt so mean to call someone, and such a disproportionate reaction to her reviews. Especially since Gabbie sent her one of her poetry books TO review, after she saw Rachel’s first reviews of her first book. That just makes her come across as so manipulative. I also just feel bad for Rachel because she’s been getting harassed by Gabbie fans after Gabbie talked about her, and she’s already had such a stressful year. Also, to be called an abuser when she’s been abused, recently had her ex threaten her... it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe it’s because I’ve watched Rachel for a while that it leaves me so upset, but it just feels bad to see Gabbie attack such a sweet girl. I will admit Rachel isn’t a perfect person, no one is, I don’t always completely agree with her as I find her views somewhat too moderate at times, but she just seems like such a nice and genuine person, and it’s upsetting to see Gabbie attack her so much. Attacks on Rachel’s character, who she is as a person, personal attacks. It hurts to see. I really don’t think Rachel really meant any harm, but Gabbie just gets so vicious in her attacks. Again, I’m not good at taking criticism either, so I can relate to Gabbie, but... I do feel like she crossed a line in just how personal her attacks were. I also think that there were tons of other genuinely mean spirited reviewers she could have gone after. Rachel didn’t just review Gabbie’s poetry because it was a trend to shit on it, but because she’s a poetry reviewer (that’s not all she does on KZbin, of course, but she has a lot of poetry videos). She has a passion for poetry! She’s read a lot and knows a lot and it’s a genuine special interest, it seems. Gabbie could have chosen anyone else, why did she have to choose the KZbinr who was most fair in her reviews? I couldn’t even watch and read all of the tweets because they just felt so nasty. And then, apparently, she threatened to sue minors because they made a google doc that seems like it was basically saying “this is why I don’t think being a patron to Gabbie is worth the money” (they were ex patrons), and then tried to say that she didn’t threaten them when she clearly did! Sure, not all of the were minors, but Gabbie was informed that some of them were because she literally brought their parents into it. That was just outrageous to me. The doc wasn’t even released publicly (which is why I said seems like, because I haven’t read the doc), either, just sent to a discord server. It just seems like a bit much to try and intimidate a group that had literal children in it. (Here’s a video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jquzhX-war9jbqc) Not to mention her misgendering Trisha. People even corrected her, but didn’t she still misgender them even after? I admit I haven’t actually seen this, just heard about it, but it just feels bad. Honestly, the whole internet owes Trisha an apology for how they handled them coming out as a “trans man”. Sure they ended up being mistaken, and they were actually nonbinary, but Trisha was trying to be vulnerable and share something about themselves which was probably really hard to do. I don’t like Trisha, because of all the other things they’ve done, but from the beginning I related to their experiences with gender and it felt really bad to see others dismiss them and call them a mockery of the trans community because isn’t that a bit truscum-y? Who gave people the right to decide who’s trans or not? This is a bit of a irrelevant tangent, but it’s been on my mind. I even thought of making a video when this was all happening defending Trisha, but... I’ve never made a commentary video before. I’m also deeply afraid of getting famous. The concept of people knowing me is horrifying. I also just... don’t think I can handle fame in a healthy manner. Anyways, that’s all I really wanted to say. I feel bad for Gabbie, because I do feel like she’s mental health spiraling, but... A lot of her actions just feel so mean to me. I can understand somewhat where Gabbie is coming from with some of this, and I don’t want to demonize her too much, but... Well, her actions are very upsetting. I wish her the best, but I also wish she would stop doing this kind of stuff.

Something I’ve noticed is that gabbi needs to be liked & praised. Growing up, I think a lot of her talents were skimmed over cus she wasn’t the “pretty one” or the “skinny one” , so now that she’s lost weight & successfully built a platform, she figured her fantasies would become a reality: she would receive credit and praise. So, when she receives constructive criticism, it triggers her to lash out as if they are WRONG Bc it goes against HER idea..... I think a lot of her behavior stems from her idea that she DESERVES praise. Yes it’s sad, but that doesn’t excuse some of behavior

ADHD isn't a mental illness, it's a mental disorder which is different. It quite literally means the prefrontal cortex of your brain, and everything associated with it, can not function "normally" hence the term neurodivergent. Other conditions included under the umbrella of neurodiversity include autism, OCD, tourette's, and dyslexia. There's a misconception that ADHD only has to do with inattentiveness or hyperactivity but that's not true. The portion of the brain that it effects is responsible for emotional regulation, executive functions, social skills, memory, and many other things. Not to defend her, but because women often go undiagnosed with ADHD due to a lack of hyperactivity as kids it make sense that she only recently got a diagnosis which would mean she has no skills built up for how to understand and work with her neurodivergent brain. But yeah you're right there's nothing we can do about it

I like your empathetic take in videos. I just wish celebrities would get the opportunity to better their mental health in privacy, as the fame spotlight makes it infinitely harder. People should have the right to make mistakes, learn from them, and get better without millions of people attesting and mocking them for it.

It’s frustrating because she’s invalidating people that actually experience manic episodes or hypomania. She’s adding to the stigma surrounding bipolar disorder and other disorders that may have similar symptoms. It is hard as someone that HAS experienced a mental break and hypomania to see things like this. People playing a character and pretending to have mental health problems to go viral is disgusting

I think Gabbie Hanna has such a bruised ego that she has to come out saying "of course I was trolling" to try and save face. But she doesn't realize that she actually caused other people real issues from the drama. Which is just so tone deaf of her.

love this video!! the pacing, editing, organization was all really really good. it’s such an interesting and difficult line when you don’t want to assume an influencer’s conditions and yet their behavior is so alarming that you want to try to help. I’ve watched quite a few videos about gh and i felt that yours was one of the only ones that recognized that gabbie is both disrespectful and a bad role model as well as someone who needs support. I desperately want her to take a break from social media but i doubt it’s going to happen. i wonder what’s going to come out of her upcoming series exposing everyone...

her behavior alarms me bc if she is just trolling, does she have a proper support system when she does have a legitimate breakdown? and will they still be around when she does have that break? I hope she does and that her public life and private life are so separate from each other that we just don't have access to the safe haven of her private life and she can retreat to that when she needs it. and if I've fallen for the trolling, then I'm just a dumb baby.

".. she's trying to cover her tracks and assume some resemblance of control" YES. People like this will act up their actual impulses so no matter what, they can always claim to have been in control. It can be comforting to feel like their mental health isn't out of control, I suppose, but it's also super manipulative towards other people.

The one good thing about the recent Gabbie gossip is that it resulted in me finding this channel. I really like your take on this, as well as how you approach other topics in your other videos. I don’t like Gabbie Hanna. After she attacked Rachel Oates, somebody who genuinely cares about poetry and wanted to give her constructive criticism, I really hated her. Gabbie even sent her new poetry book to Rachel and Rachel critiqued it. Then, Gabbie went and cried to their only mutual friend about how big of a jerk Rachel was in her video, even though Gabbie gave her her book to review.

When I saw that last sentence in the leaked post, I felt so bad for her. I struggle so much with feeling that things are out of my control and that has def led to some shitty coping mechanisms. Thus, when I saw that she said “it feels good to be in control,” like, you can tell that she’s using the “hate”/criticism she usually gets as a way of controlling the narrative surrounding her to distract from the lack of control she feels in her day-to-day life or mental health. Instead of taking time for mindfulness or rest, she’s using the internet to almost SH and feel like she’s in control again. This is all speculation lol, but you can see she’s not okay. Personally, i think she should just take herself off the internet, try and repair the damage she’s caused other content creators, and like vibe out far from LA.

I must admit, that while Gabbie Hanna is abusive and problematic, and I'm not trying to defend her. But, some of the people making fun of her crossed a line. People being terrible doesn't excuse bullying, the targeted attacks are very uncalled for. Also, as a singer, making fun of her singing kind of pissed me off. I feel like it's sending the wrong message to people, especially potential singers. It's a very vulnerable thing, and I think so many potential singers are scared to do it because they are scared of being mocked like Gabbie.

My take (as an internet stranger) is that she is a digital self-harmer. She is intentionally provoking all sides to make sure she gets called out for faking and everything else. Sarah Z did a great video about someone who claimed to have written My Immortal (the FanFic) and how that person had dozens of alt accounts all attacking each other (ie himself). It's the illusion of attention. I think Gabbi literally cannot imagine anything worse than Internet irrelevance.
