In the old testament people were going into slavery to provide for their basic needs. In the New Testament God's people "sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all as anyone had need (Acts 2: 45)." What a great example of spiritual development in God's people. As people better understand God's unselfish love they valued the economic freedom of others more and not less

The laws governing non-Hebrew slaves were more harsh than those governing Hebrew slaves: non-Hebrew slaves could be owned permanently, and bequeathed to the owner's children, whereas Hebrew slaves were treated as servants, and were released after six years of service or the occurrence of a jubilee . Love from a God ? Give me a beak !

@@Bugsy0333 I didn't say the existence of slavery was an example of God's love. I think it's an example of God being patient as his people developed morally.

There are simple explanations in the Bible that say that slavery was not Gods intent. For instance God says treat others as you would want to be treated. Not to many people would want to be a slave or forced into it. Joseph was sold into slavery out of vengeance and jealously of his Brothers and told there father he was killed by a wild beast. All of it was evil doing and not approved of God. However God always can bring good out of the bad in the end.

@@caleschnell The very fact that you have to beg an Atheist for Bible lessons shows how little you understand your own religion. Leviticus 25 precisely describes chattel slavery: "Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. Another example how many Christian apologists manipulate the issue of Biblical slavery. 1) Total focus on debt slavery. Many apologistes become radio silent when it comes to rules about chattel slavery in the Bible. The listeners will be not informed about these passages. 2) Trivializing and even romantisizing Biblical slavery. Debt slavery and slavery in total will be described as the relation between an employee and his employer. Utter nonsense. 3) Biblical slavery is unique. A comparison with the laws of other nation in ANE shows that the Biblical slavery is not different. Some passages are even worse: 3 yoears of inentured slavery in Coce of Hammurabi vs 6 years in the Bible 4) Denying or downplaying the danger of sexual slavery the Biblical laws provide. The way Boonstra addresses Exodus 21,7-11 is quite shocking. Keep in mind the the daughter does not have ti give consent to the purchase. As soon as she becomes slave she can not consent to anything anymore. Total obedience to the commands of the master. The Bible is there very clear. Forced marriage and marital rape are part of sexual slavery. Also shocking is that the Bible puts sex at the same essential level as food and clothing. Women can face a kind of sexual starvation?? 5) "I love my master". Exodus 21 offers a way to coerce a Hebrew into chattel slavery. Kieep in mind that thae wife and children givebn to a Hebrew stay with the master a chattel slaves. The hebrew has to leave after six yers without the right to keep contact with the wife and the chlidren. The children could be sold at any time. The only way to hoipefully stay with the family is to become a chattel slave. Not e free decision in my eyes. Other mations had superior laws granting one chlid to the father and released into freedom. 6) comparing apples with oranges. A common tactic of deception is the comparison of the treatment of antebellum slaves with the law text of the Bible. Apples and oranges. You have to compare the texts and the actual treatment of slaves separately. 7) Antebellum slaves had no rights. Wrong. That happens when you never read the slaves laws of the antebellum South: Penal Code of Georgia (1833) 13th Division Section XII: "Any owner or employer of a slave or slaves, who shall cruelly treat such slave or slaves, by unnecessary and excessive whipping, by withholding proper food and sustenance, requiring greater labor from such slave or slaves than he, she, or they are able to perform, or by not affording proper clothing, whereby the health of such slave or slaves may be injured and impaired, or cause or permit the same to be done, every such owner or employer shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction shall be punished byfine or imprisonment in the common jail of the County, or both, at the discretion of the Court." As you can see slaves had the right of life, the right of bodily integrity, the right of proper feedeing and shelter etc. The rights of slaves in Antebellum South were more or less the same as the ones the Bible granted chattel salves. Therefore, both kinds of slavery have the same level of morality. Just face the truth. My advice would be to check the cources and not to follow blindy the claims of apologists.

This is what Revelation 13:9-10 says about slavery and war: "If anyone has an ear, let them hear. Those who lead into captivity shall go into captivity; those who kill with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints." The Bible is clearly against slavery and war, basically saying that what goes around comes around--those who practice slavery and war will pay in the next life, if not here in this one: "Vengeance is mine, says the Lord." This is not karma but rather, it is God who is in control. And when the Bible says, "if anyone has an hear, let them hear," we sure as hell better listen.

It began when the pope divided the lands between Spain and Portugal. The treaty was called The Treaty of Tordesillas. It was signed at Tordesillas in Spain on June 7, 1494, and authenticated at Setúbal, Portugal, divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between the Portuguese Empire and the Spanish Empire (Crown of Castile), along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands, off the west coast of Africa. The Lisbon earthquake was God's judgment against the Roman Catholic Church's racism. The Pope let Spain and Portugal divide up East and West Africa giving its explorers permission to rape, pillage, and glean whatever they wanted. Notice Revelation 18:13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. That racism continues to this day and why it is institutionalized in this country and throughout the world. In my opinion, no Black man should be a member of the Catholic church.

The problem arises whenever you address this topic on the plane of morality. The Bible is not a code of moral ethics and it never will be. What it is is a history of God reconciling a people unto Himself. You see, the manner that Paul addresses slavery is not at a institutional or even moral level but at a heart and spiritual level because as soon as the slave treats his master as his own brother then the master will treat him as such a manner as well. The problem arises whenever we try to make the Bible a codification of moral ethics and therefore make a codified system of rules as it pertains to moral behavior when clearly it is the Holy Spirit itself through our consciences that will in such a manner convict us and with our cooperation draw us out from immoral behavior from reading the word of God. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” In fact, you could also argue that this was the problem of the Pharisees back in Christ's day. They were an absolutely moral people outwardly but they had spiritually inwardly cut themselves off from the flow of trust and love that they would have had with their own Creator and if they had done so they would have welcomed the Savior with open arms. I would argue that this is the same case with the Laodicean state of the church today. They are a very morally righteous people outwardly but inwardly are ravenous wolves having a form of righteousness but denying the power thereof because their whole being is based on a codification of moral ethics and not a radical change of being by the Holy Spirit as ought it to be. I suggest reading the book ‘Subversion of Christianity’ by French Huguenot Jacques Ellul. Read the chapter on Moralism. Absolutely astounding chapter that astutely describes the Laodicean condition of Christianity today.

I was disappointed that in a discussion of slavery in the Bible, we didn't actually get to hear about what the Bible has to say about slavery? You focused entirely on the laws that only applied to Hebrews, though you never mentioned that. The release after six years of indentured servitude was only available to Israelites, and the Bible is very clear that after Egypt you could not make a fellow Israelite a slave. Actual slavery in the Bible was reserved for foreigners. They were the actual slaves in the Bible in Israel, and they were in fact lifelong chattel slaves. And their children after them. Generation after generation. This is what I was hoping you were going to discuss because this is a real issue for me. But you didn't even mention it? And contrary to what you said here, the Slave Bible was not made by American slave owners. It wasn't even made in America. It was made by Christians in England. By a Christian evangelical organization founded and run by a reverend and Bishop. Who by the way was one of the leading abolitionists of the day. Not some pro-slave Christian of the time. So the Slave Bible wasn't in fact created by American Slave owners who wanted to keep their slaves ignorant of what the Bible had to say, but by a British Christian organization to evangelize to slaves in the British West Indies. And who were abolitionists. Not exactly the way you described it here?

00:2:32 is the first lie the presenter tells in service to apologetics. Leviticus 25:44-45 clearly describes chattel slavery with no time limits, which is the same as historical American slavery. God is obviously fine with chattel slavery under his regulatory framework (but not mixed fabrics or shellfish). Leviticus 25:44-45 completely destroys Shawn's entire thesis.

The same principles can apply to people born into a sexual minority. Like Jesus mentioned the eunuch born that way. Not Gods ideal as it was in Eden. Yet they exist. The question is how does the Christian today treat those sexual minorities who don’t fall into the hetero normative category? Does the church offer them Christian principles they can live by while still allowing them to live their authentic lives? Eve was created because it was not good for man to be alone. Likewise that principle can apply to sexual minorities who live in life long monogamous relationships. Slavery was never Gods ideal but God gave provisions to protect the slave. Christians today can extend Gods principles to those born without the ideal sexual orientation or ambiguous genitalia. I’m not talking about those with gender dysphoria (a topic for another time) such as the trans people but rather those born intersex, asexual, and homosexual. One Christian principle that comes to mind is monogamy. And as for the texts referring to same sex behavior it’s always in the context of idolatry, prostitution, exploitation, gang rape; these don’t reflect Christian values. My point is Gods Word can allow for fair treatment to the less ideal amongst us provided they follow Gods law. And the adultery law can apply to a gay couple joined in lifelong monogamy the same way it would apply to a hetero couple joined in matrimony. The principle is the same. God calls us to be faithful to one spouse. The African Americans who suffered through slavery and segregation know the feeling of those sexual minorities marginalized by the Christian majority. The Seventh Day Adventist church has a unique message of truth for our world and yet they can’t reach sexual minorities because the only options available are celibacy and heterosexual marriage. Celibacy being impossible for those without the gift, aka asexual people. And heterosexual marriage for a gay person is traumatic for both parties when they come to terms with the reality of the matter. Most if not all mixed orientation marriages fail. And change therapy does not produce the desired fruit. So that leaves a whole group of sexual minorities who would never be reached by the truth because they were deemed unclean like the gentiles of old. There are many gay people who live their lives according to the principles founded by hetero monogamy. The Adventist founders were radical in their theology and fair treatment of African Americans. It’s time Adventists were radical in their theology and fair treatment of sexual minorities. The Loud Cry is about to go out to gather the harvest for the Great Day of God is at the door.
