I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.” - Albert Einstein (Letter Dated 24 March 1954 Included in “Albert Einstein: The Human Side”) From that same ^^^ letter, he saw theistic religion as a man-made fiction: “The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation, no matter how subtle, can change this for me.” Funny when religious people try to claim Sir Al as theirs.

Of course these are early attempts and in the future they will become more cogent. Deepak is just trying to present some of these attempts and all power to him for doing so. Sam was just being a smart aleck and trying to win the debate. Actually physics and science without the truths of spirituality are just inert mechanisms--but most of you here won't agree as you revel in mechanistic laws and insentient principles. Physics and science without the higher creative genius consciousness (known as GOD) is like a car without its driver (and please do not bring in Dawkins with his silly arguments about a complex creator being improbable and therefore impossible, because that argument is not his and was seen as childish by more advanced intellects).

But right now I think "spirituality" is a personal thing. Physics and science are everywhere. Maybe there is a unifying force, but that is yet to be determined. Deepak just doesn't understand physics. 23:18 The observer effect isn't what he thinks it is. If you observe a very small "particle" (which is really a wave) you have to hit it with a relatively MASSIVE particle (which is really a wave) to see it. You effect the state of that particle in order to observe it. If you hit it with a photon of light, and you don't bother to observe it because you're away from your electron microscope, that doesn't mean or even imply that the fact you're not observing will effect it's state. I hate Deepak so much. He is absolutely, positively, full of shit. I really hate that physics is made intentionally difficult to understand when it's described to people. I mean, MAYBE if you don't observe what you see under the electron microscope it WILL effect what is being observed, but how do you design an experiment to demonstrate that is plausible? A lot of the though experiments like this come out of the 1960's when people were just doing too much goddamned LSD and not enough critical thinking.

Perhaps, instead of "woo", you might actually try reading some scientific works? Maybe start with "Neuroscience Letters" in 2005, or "The Psychologist" (25 (7): 520-523) - both articles which pint out just how silly the "god helmet" actually is. What's so hard to understand? That only people WITHOUT science degrees talk the type of tripe you do.

As a physicist I cringe every time one of these religious types claims to have a basis for God in quantum mechanics or some other bullshit. Especially when they introduce their own metaphysics and masquerade this as physics. E.g. in this talk Deepak tried to say that without a conscious observer the universe is in an indeterminant state. Nothing in the entire field of physics states anything implying anything remotely similar to this claim. In fact, this type of claim is necessarily metaphysics and not science, since to test this would require there to be no conscious observers, which would mean we still wouldn't know the answer.
@Washington0Jefferson11 жыл бұрын
1) You insult deepak for making statements about some UNTESTABLE nature of the universe -- but please remember current scientific theory suggests 12 UNTESTABLE DIMENSIONS. right ? Further... 2) the observer effect shows that without a human observer, photons behave as WAVES or they behave as if in a state of POTENTIAL -- yet when observed they become PARTICLES, behaving as physical matter. So is it MIND-BLOWINGLY OBTUSE of Deepak to hypothesize that a conscious observer MAY BE NECESSARY for all energy to behave as physical matter ? It's an extrapolation - YES - but it's not incoherent. That doesn't sound any more CRAZY than saying things Materialist Scientists say: "We popped out of nothing." "God is unnecessary in our crazy theories, therefore god is unlikely." "Material substances CAUSE immaterial phenomena." i.e. Brain CAUSES Mind. Really? Does matter follow rules of energy ? Or does Energy follow rules of matter? Who is leading this dance ? Answer: ENERGY LEADS. *Immaterial Forces/Causes DICTATE Material Responses/Effects.* PS - what makes you a "physicist"? Because i've been studying physics for 10 years - does that make ME a physicist? According to the Definition of Expert, that alone makes me an EXPERT in physics. Do i need to get PAID by someone else to call myself a physicist? Do i need a piece of paper from a physicist with his blessing to call myself a physicist? What makes YOU more of an expert than ME? You didn't demonstrate mastery of EITHER TOPIC: Science or Spirituality in your comment.
@ghollisjr11 жыл бұрын
String theory/M-theory/etc. is not a scientific theory as it has not been corroborated by experimentation, it's a theory only in the mathematical sense. But that's a side note since if it is confirmed by evidence then your points still stand. First: If the theory _requires_ the assumption of more dimensions in order for its conclusions to hold, and if it is _verified by experiment_, then it becomes the best explanation we have. Until then it is foolish to believe these untested aspects of string theory. And if it turns out that string theory is in principle untestable, then it will be disqualified from science. Second: Deepak did not merely hypothesize that concious observers are necessary, he stated it as a fact. Since it is not actually a fact, he was dishonest. And like I showed, this claim is in principle untestable, whereas the extra dimensions may make testable predictions. Third: Crazy things can turn out to be true; what's important is not how crazy one thinks the proposition is, but whether or not any _evidence_ exists to back it up. When you re-define "nothing" to mean what physicists actually mean, it's not actually inconsistent as it is with the philosophical definition, and moreover there is _evidence_ backing it up. Fourth: Energy and matter are interchangeable; therefore the question of who-rules-whom is meaningless. The laws of nature are trends we observe; energy and matter follow these trends, and neither rules the other. Ad. PS: What makes you a physicist, or scientist in general, is whether you _do_ science. Reading scientific literature doesn't qualify you, though it is admirable to do so. Getting paid doesn't qualify you, hell, look at the anti-climate-science guys bought off by corporations. You have to try to create new hypotheses, try and test competing explanations with experiment, and ultimately present your findings to the world, allowing for criticism unlike those who try to censor skeptical opinions. In short: you have to _do_ science to be a scientist. I don't claim to be more of an expert than you; I don't even claim to be an expert. I just _do_ physics, particle physics to be precise.

I wish Sam would use these types of arguments against Jordan Peterson in their current discussions. It seems that his arguments have devolved over time. Not the arguments that are directed to Deepak's new age BS but those that are more aimed to Jean. Specifically his opening statement at 8:30 One of Jordan's argument against Sam is "who are you to define God? or assume which god people believe in". It is a fact that most Christians believe in the "invisible person" type of God and not Jordan's sophisticated definition which has real consequences in the world. If the majority of Christians had the same definition of God as Jordan have, most "new atheists" wouldn't have any issue with religion.

I haven't seen the entire debate, but it sounds to me that Deepak Chopra is a substance dualist, who uses the "god of the gaps" argument to explain unknown, and does not define "god" specificially, so he can get away with it. He also seems to confuse metaphor with reality.
@konberner1708 жыл бұрын
Wow, Sam did really well here. Deepak's problem is that he jumps to conclusions constantly, whereas Sam and Michael only jump to them occasionally. It is true that the metaphysics of materialism have not been proven, but Deepak's conjectures, being stated as absolute truths, are a much worse case of presumption and so *more* against the spirit of science. Indeed, they are effectively closer to religion, which he seems to reject and embrace in some unclear manner (but appears to be depending on how convenient it is to his presumptions).
@MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын
I've been saying for a long time that I don't believe in science; I believe in scientific method. That requires coming up with theories and *repeatable* tests that can be used to test those theories. And when somebody can come up with a new repeatable test that makes existing theories to fail, we start to look for a new explanation. And if the Bible or Koran or any other religious writing provided *any* theory that could explain the observations we have, I would believe in those, too. The major difference between religion and scientific method is that scientific method assumes that the theory we have is just an approximation and we're constantly improving the theory and tests. Religion has "rules set in stone" and no matter how much contrary information you can find in nature, the religion cannot be ever fixed to better match with reality. That alone makes me non-religious in long run because I want to understand nature and surrounding world.
@konberner1702 жыл бұрын
@@MikkoRantalainen You are generalizing about religion in ways that, to me, mean that you don't understand it. Further, if you think of something like "thou shall not kill", can you detail in what way this is merely opinion and is not grounded in anything? What is the contrary information that makes murder OK? What would it look like?
@MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын
@@konberner170 I agree that "thou shall not kill" seems clear enough if we *assume* that killing means killing another adult human being. However, when people start to argue that that alone should be enough to disallow stem cell research, we have a big problem. Of course, a sane solution would be to amend that piece of text to explicitly mention that this is about people (whatever definition you want) things would be much more clear. But you cannot amend the text due *religious* reasons. Religion is not about getting perfect set of rules in long run. It's about trying to follow some arcane set of rules. Show me a religion what allows amending rules (I mean rules comparable to the Bible for that religion, not opening hours for a church) and still continue to be called the same religion! I've yet to learn about such religion but I'd be happy to learn about such a religion. Compare this to scientific method that always tries to find the truth and simply creates models (called "theory" in natural sciences) that try to describe the reality and whenever new evidence is found that is contrary the model, the model will be fixed to match the reality instead of coming up with some "interpretation" for the model or evidence that allows skipping modifying the model. If the Bible offered the best explanation of reality, anybody using scientific method should gravitate towards it. However, it seems that the more we know about reality, the further we get from the Bible. And I would assume that the same is true for all sacred writings of any religion.
@konberner1702 жыл бұрын
@@MikkoRantalainen Buddhism doesn't even have rules. It instead has "training experiments". For example, you can try not drinking for a few months and see if your life gets better or not. Buddha even said in paraphrase, "Don't believe anything anyone says, including me." Taoism is about not doing and allowing life to be as it is. It points out that the value in a pot is the emptiness inside it that allows contents and not the pot itself. So, your openness to life is what is of value. It goes on to specifically critique fixed rules and moralizing and points out that "the good" cannot be determined through moralizing, as it is situational. Christianity is associated with lots of rules and the original bible even has the 10 commandments, but note that the beatitudes of Jesus, who claimed to not replace but to clarify God message, are all observations and not commandments. So there are at least 2 and perhaps 3 examples of how a strawman version of religion that takes the lowest form and claims it to be the entirety of it is missing some really great stuff. That said, well done on acknowledging that ethics is not doable by science, and something else is needed. Call that other thing what you'd like, but for some, religion is the term they use.
@MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын
@@konberner170 I would argue that, a training experiments such as "try not drinking and see what happens" as you gave as paraphrased example for Buddhism, is not a religion - as in a religion shared by multiple people. Instead, that's some rough guidelines or method to improve your own life based on trial and error on your personal life. But the results are not applicable to other people and are definitely not rules that should be everybody with the same religion. If one defines Buddhism like that, then I guess I'm Buddhist even though I'd usually claim to be metaphysical naturalist if a single label is required for some reason.

It was a mistake for Nightline to invite an arrogant ignoramus and blowhard like Deepak Chopra to a debate. He apparently does not know how to debate, but would rather shout and interrupt to make his point. In addition, he is incapable of providing any concrete evidence to support his claims.

This Deepak guy is a joke. Not only are his arguments invalid, but his disrespect is embarrassing reprehensible.

Jessica meow Murfray I spent plenty of time in middle eastern fox holes, trading fire with a determined enemy. The only higher power I ever called on was air support. In fact, it seems more likely to say there are *only* atheists in foxholes; we know there is no afterlife. The truly faithful have no fear of death, and generally shout "Allahu Ackbar!"

Deepak is a master of bullshitting. It’s so annoying once you hear it, can’t unhear it.
