"But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those that hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those that abuse you... But love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High; FOR HE IS KIND TO THE UNGRATEFUL AND THE WICKED. BE MERCIFUL, JUST AS YOUR FATHER IS MERCIFUL." -Jesus (Luke 6:27, 35-36).

If God does not love everyone [and hates] some people, why would he tell you to 'love your enemy'? Obviously, if god hates his 'enemies' [or whatever you'd like to call them] he certainly wouldn't have said to 'love your enemies.'

Great video. The best verse I can think of is 1 Cor. 16:13- Quit you as men. His ways are not our ways. His thinking is above ours and we can only believe what His word says without needing to understand it all from our finite and human perspective. The more we believe and obey in faith the more knowledge and wisdom He gives so that we see Him for how he is although for now through a glass darkly. And yes it's difficult to deal with the proud boasters who say no a loving God would never do that.

Ten minutes of someone showing his ignorance of the Bible. Romans 9 has nothing to do with predestination but with God's choice of Israel (Jacob) over the gentiles (Esau) to bring the Messiah to all mankind. God IS Love and doesn't create anyone for the purpose of destroying them. He wants everyone to come to repentance and put their faith in Jesus Christ.

I blieve God does love everybody. He calls us to love our enemies and uses the demonstration of God giving rain to the just an the unjust. If God had no love for the unjust, how could He give this teaching for us to love our enemies? He doesn't love everyone the same. There is a sense in which He hates the unjust but also a sense in which He loves them as well; albeit not with the "particular" love he has for His sheep.

@FaithDefenders2008 Since Hate means "Intense or passionate dislike" if God hates Sinners then why would He have compassion on them at the same time? Wouldn't it make sense to say God loves everyone and doesn't want them to perish Thus sending Jesus to bear sin in place of sinners so that we may boldly approach God once we're cleansed and Born again. God being a righteous judge still has to punish Sinners who don't except Jesus.

According to Bible scholars, Loved and hated are not emotions but rather a matter of being blessed or not. "He was said to have 'loved' the one he adopted and 'hated' the one he did not adopt. Here all that is signified is that Jacob was blessed and Esau was not." That is according to a Nelson Study Bible. And according to this man, God is mad at the sinner. SO WHAT? Being mad at someone means you don't love them? He really needs to think before he speaks. Our parents punish us, but still love.
@Jaded_Mandarin
@Jaded_Mandarin 13 жыл бұрын
He also makes a mistake of thinking that wrath and anger of God are not compatible with his love for sinner and thus equal hatred. The fact that parent may be angry with his children and punish them does not mean he does not love them. "He does not retain His anger for ever because He delights in love." (Micah 7:18) "In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid My face from you, But with everlasting love I will have compassion on you " (Isaiah 54:8)

The vast majority of posters have disagreed with Dr. Morey. Few of them have answered his teaching with Scripture. Some pin the pejorative 'hyper-calvinism' on his breast. He is a consistent 5 point Calvinist. Sin is not just an external action. Sin inheres in the person - or do you deny Original Sin? Is God weeping for all eternity because He sent those He loves to Hell? He served justice on Rebels and He's not blubbering over it. "Even the plowing of the wicked is sin."

God's 'hating' of Esau is to do with the birthright and typeology - Esau is a picture of the first Adam whilst Jacob of the second. God, before Esau was even born knew Esau's character and for the purposes of inheriting the birthright 'hated' him or rejected him for that purpose (like Adam in a way). Remember that the Old Testament, amongst other things, is a picture or a type - the pictures/types are not exact matches but were well understood by the very early church.

I'm reading a really good book called "Dominion and Common Grace" by Gary North, and he systematically demonstrates how grace does not necessitate favor. Just as we should love our neighbors, by doing this we heap fiery coals on their head. In the same way, God loves His enemies, not an emotional love, but the fulfillment of the law is love. And He does this to condemn the reprobate even further.

This guy deserves an OSCAR. He's a great actor. Not only that, he must obviously be a descendant of Jacob whom God loved and not Esau whom God hated. Nonetheless, isn't it funny that Calvinists who believe God has cast away Jacob (Israel) also believe that He has replaced them with the church (all the predestined elect). Replacement theology is in essence a form of hatred toward Jacob (Israel) whom God loves. What a travesty of God's sovereignty. Calvinists hate whom God loves. (Rom 11:28).

Because in the mean time (prior to judgment day) many who are "enemies" now will become "friends" (i.e. Christian believers) eventually; and since we don't know who they are, but God does, we HAVE to love everybody, even if God does not. The key to understanding/solving your aparent contradiction is to realize God is not man and man is not God, otherwise you're going to experience continual roll-confusion between the two. Check out Lane Chaplin, here on KZbin. He's got lots of helpful info.

God is love. He said, "abide in my love". God so loved the world yet some clearly do not abide in His love. Esau was a creation of God in the physical sense but Esau's deeds were what God hated. It wasn't God's fault that God hated Esau. Neither should it be our fault if the world hates us. We are to love each other. We are to love the world as God does. As far as it depends on us, we should have no problem with the world. We should give no reason for the world to hate us. We should love as God.

A pompous attitude and jabbing one's finger at the camera does in no way make a valid point out of something that is ungodly and untrue. The Bible is a good book and has many inspired verses that teach us about God. It also has verses that are clearly written by humans, verses that these people then ascribed to God. We must use our hearts AND minds, both of which are given of God, to know the difference. God DOES love everyone, regardless of our sins, for He understands and can forgive. Amen.

The bible does state that God hates the wicked, but I think people need to take in mind how the ancient hebrews would use language to the extreme to make a point even though it was not literal.For example: Jesus states that one must hate his mother and father and so on or else that person can't be a disciple. Did Jesus really mean for us to hate our family? or was he making a comparison and contrast via semitic linguistic extremism to make a point? Same rule applies when it states that God hates

@FaithDefenders2008 God hates sin, if a person is a sinner they have a sinful nature. God loves people thus He sent Jesus. Jesus did die in a Sinners place a place deserving for People. Jesus bore the wrath of God on Sinners. Now people have the option of taking up Gods nature in exchange for the old man sinful nature. God loves the people, hates sin, but without receiving Jesus God will have to Judge Sinners rightfully.

FaithDefenders, you make some great points, but I have a few questions: Does God allow sinners to go to hell because he hates them or because they are disobedient? Could he still love those who he punishes, not just chastens, but punishes? Or maybe a better question is: does the Bible ever talk about God still loving or longing for those who sin and remain condemned?

It is a serious exegetical mistake to interpret Romans 9 to be referring to individuals’ salvation. According to Norman Geisler, “the election of the nation was temporal, not eternal; that is, Israel was chosen as a national channel through which the eternal blessing of salvation through Christ would come to all people (cf. Gen. 12:1-3; Rom. 9:4-5). Not every individual in Israel was elected to be saved (9:6).”

And Part 3. Please understand! Sinners are the ones who are unsaved! The ones who either do not believe in the Son or unwilling to repent or both. The bible states that: "For he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world that we may be holy and unblemished in his sight in love." Ephesians 1:4 That's why when bible refers to sinners, it means unrepentant sin! However the fact that he forgave us our sins does not mean they will not lead to death if we neglect ourconscience

It's like when Jesus commands says to be his disciple, you must hate your own mother, father, wife etc. (Luke 14:26). Is he commanding us to sin? No, he means, put Jesus first. A clarification of that verse is found in Matthew 10:34-37. You must do to them what would be seen as hate, leaving them, because you love Jesus more. It's just like how God loved Jacob more. In short, God blessing some people over others for his glory is a far cry from creating someone for the purpose of Hellfire.

@FaithDefenders2008 I love how you are trying to make this into a Roman Catholic interpretation. Actually, the Thomists would be more with Calvinists on Romans 9, while Molinists would be more with the Arminians on Romans 9. @FaithDefenders2008 Quick qestion; if true Christianity started to die out in the 2nd or 3rd century, how do you explain Jesus saying His true Church would never perish from the Earth? (Matt 16:18) How do you explain that the earliest advocate of Calvinist-like beliefs is St. Augustine, who, in case you didn't know, was a 4th and 5th century person. This puts the earliest indication of Calvinist-like beliefs AFTER you claim Christianity was largely dead. To be con't.

Hyper-calvinism has a number of key tenets and a principal one is to deny that God has any sort of love for the non-elect. Spurgeon was vehemently opposed to such a wicked doctrine. Morey unambiguously preaches this very thing. In fact its the point of the whole video. Morey's twisting and selective use of scripture is shocking. The lowest level of agape love is far above any natural human love.

@FaithDefenders2008 Yeah you are right it also says God hates, but then you have a total contradiction! You cannot say that God is love and than in the same breath say "Oh but God hates too" the two statements conflict with each other. You can't have it both ways. Either God is love or he's not, pretty simple. But then the Bible is full of things like this so that shouldn't be any surprise.
@Tavlo
@Tavlo 16 жыл бұрын
(cont...) However, there is a different type of love, which is a caring that has nothing to do with liking or affection. God does not create people who he has already condemned. He gives people choice to receive him, THAT is love. Otherwise we are created beings doomed for hell. That's not justice, and we know God is just.

I think the sins we neglect the most are the ones we confess. That's the problem and we must love one another to beat those. The problem of this generation is too much independance from one another and too little love. That's why the answer to the question Does God love everybody is no! He loves those who are willing to repent and accept his love! Because his love heals from sin.
@NikonRules303

Since when does the God of love hate people? This verse, coupled with the rest of Romans 9, has led many to believe that God does not love all people, at least with regard to their eternal salvation. He seems to arbitrarily choose some people for salvation and some people for damnation. But must we interpret this verse in that way? No! A more careful reading of this passage indicates that the subject is not individual salvation, but Israel’s national role in redemptive history.

@ajk
@ajk 13 жыл бұрын
To me it's really simple. If God is love, than God would have to be incapable of hate, as hate is the total opposite of what love is. For that reason among many others, I completely reject the idea that the Biblical God is anything close to the real God. You can call me a sinner, call me destined for hell or whatever you want, but nothing will ever make this view of God make sense to me anymore, because a good bit of it simply does not.

However, it's not as though God condemned Esau. We don't know about his soul (or even Jacob's). And in life, he gave Esau a lesser kingdom, Edom. (Of course Edom would later be destroyed, but that's because it was wicked. That said he, loved Israel more and obviously took more crap from them, but we know that already). Hate here just meant that he loved Esau less. He gave Jacob what one would think belonged to Esau. He FAVORED Jacob. If Esau was truly hated, then why fear God at all?

Some 'reformed' theologians dismiss or dilute the Lord's commandment in Lk 6 and Mk 5 to love your enemy by various means (often mistranslating the verb agapao and the noun agape). These are the original NT Greek words used in the relevant verses of Luke and Mark. So how can we discover what the correct meaning of agapao and agape is? Well John 17:26 tells us what kind of love the Father has for the Son, its agapao (verb) and agape (noun). Nothing modern about this Pfsif - sola scriptura?

"...there is no reason in us that God should love us" - and yet He does! Praise His holy name! The point I'm making about Esau and Jacob is that they are pictures /types. What Paul says in Romans 9 about Jacob and Esau is not that God hates some people and loves others as Dr Morey contends - we are not talking about people who have died or the end of the age are we? God does hate those who leave this mortal life having heard the gospel and having rejected it (there goes the can of worms).

Infidel, If you want to slap that label on Morey it would fit....but really, a consistent reading of scripture leads one to the same conclusion, no? I began as an Arminian, but the problem for me was that it's not "systematic." it falls apart at the seams... all of the beliefs are separate, and they don't dovetail...they fail under the spotlight of scripture and logic.

Dr. Morey should first ask himself whether he hates his father, mother, wife, children and brethren because if he doesn't he's not a disciple of Jesus Christ, let alone a predestined elected Calvinist. (Luke 14:26). Now put that on your pudding and eat it.

If it is as you say, then how & why does God show longsuffering toward people He does not love? ~As far as Psalm 7:11- Does being angry with a person/ people mean that one hates them? @FaithDefenders2008 The difference between science books and the bible is science books attempt to support their arguments with facts or theories. The bible, if not for faith, could be taken as complete fiction. All I was saying is that quoting a book that atheists deem to be fiction should not be used in debate because it is not a credible source to those you are trying to refute.

Hey why don't you pray the next line in Psalm 139, like David? "Search me, O God and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting." It turns out that David wasn't quite as righteous as Jesus. He clears it up in Psalm 145:9 "The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made."

@FaithDefenders2008 Why is God angry with believers? Or was he angry with those believers while they were still unbelievers? Either the believers are sinners in which case God loves sinners or believers once were sinners in which case God still loves sinners, otherwise He wouldn't have them come to faith. In both cases God's anger at sin is compatible with His love for sinner. Does the unbeliever's future faith merit love of God or is it the love of God that enables unbeliever to come to faith?

Pfsif - thing is that you've got these full of self-righteous hatred 5 point Calvinists on the one hand (are all 5 point Calvinists of this ilk?) and on the other extreme you've got the liberal ecumenical evangelists or (worse?) the prosperity gospel crowd and variants. I believe that all these extremists are way off the mark. So many want to re-define what the Lord clearly says so that their 'pet' theologies can stand - its wrong.

Part 2 my point is that: The reason why God hates sinners is because they WANT to keep their sins and they are unwilling to repent! They do not want the love of God if they can't disobey him! That's why God can't allow them to see life because they prefer death (which is the result of disobedience). In a way, God only gives them what they want --- his hate.

I do understand the passage, its very clear. Just so that we didn't miss the message about loving our enemies the Holy Spirit ensured this message is in both Luke 6 and Matthew 5 (v43=>). Was Jesus out of synch with the Holy Spirit and the Father then? No. Look at the Lord's clear words first and foremost because that is the primary context setter. Continued...

This is directed at anybody whether Calvinist, Arminian, Lutheran, Zwinglian or whatever: what do you make of John ch10 v37 & v38? Jesus is speaking to those same Pharisees of whom in verse 26 of the same chapter He had said were not His sheep.
