Another thing I love about Deathwish, is how at the beginning Franklin says "It seems like people are always telling me to do stuff, I do it, and nothing changes." At the end, Devin tells Frank to kill Michael (and Trevor). In Deathwish, he makes his own choice, and gets a happy ending.

@@NoFlu meh depends on how you veiw I personally think Michael definitely knew because like seriously when Dave confronted him he was really calm and usually that means a person was prepared for the consequences or just didnt care infact Michael and Dave were more worried about trevor than the actual FBI. Obviously Michael didnt want Franklin to get involved but Franklin still got involved that's definitely not on Michael but he seemed very aware that Dave would probably find out, I'm not saying hes the bad guy because he did have to do the heist it wasnt really a choice but based on the fact that we know hes roped someone in before (him and trevor) it is a bit iffy But like I said depends on how we view it he could have just not cared and didnt expect the FIB to have eyes on a small time "gangster" like Franklin and it was all Dave's fault which could be the case But in the end Michael dosent seem like a bad person he just seems unstable

Imo the arcs are. (Deathwish ending) Michael: Goes from arrogant, depressed, evil, downer to understanding himself and regretting his life while also embracing it. He regrets his actions but by the end he’s happy with the family, friends and job he’s got. He finally gets out of his rot and learns that there’s more to life than crime. Trevor: Learns to love and forgive. He longs for some sort of connection and by the end he’s happy. He’s living his best life with new and old friends. And a lover too. Franklin: Learns how life works. He wants out of every situation he’s in because he learns that he will always be the little guy. Franklin both starts to dislike Michael and Lamar but by the end embraces them as friends. He knows Michael used him, but saves him anyway because Michael treated him like an actual human. He loved him as a son. Franklin learns what life is and gets out of it before he has the chance to end up like Michael or Trevor. He also embraces his relationships. I guess it’s a game about how, experience and friendship go further than money or corporate greed. If you break it down that far.

Thats a really good way to put it. Its truly an underrated story, and yet a story which resonates with a lot of people. I've never played the game, but I do remember seeing friends play it. I think the game really does show 2 ways to tackle life. You either play it safe and regret your descisions, or you risk it all for the best possible outcome. You can see Michael agreeing with the former and Trevor with the latter, and Franklin is caught between those two differening outlooks. It shows fucked up people in fucked up situations, but it also shows how sticking with like minded people to try to make something better All in all, stick with your friends, and try to be on the same page, because if you don't, then things will get hairy real fast.

Michael threatening to kill Amanda out of rage is still chilling. It was his way of getting his frustration with his family out, and also showing his violent side surfacing. I think that it's really interesting that once Michael shows his buried violent nature instead of his faux-happiness, his family comes back to live with him again.

The therapy missions in general are underrated. They have one for each of the different chapters and if you visit them when they're available, you get a really deep insight into who Michael is as a person, and why he hates himself and his life despite everything he did to get it.

I honestly have never done another ending besides the death wish. I’ve seen the others through videos and have just never thought it would feel right to pick any other option. Franklin, despite acting like he doesn’t, cares a lot about those closest to him. He goes above and beyond for Micheal, he tows for Tanisha, he tails some hillbillies just cus Trevor asked him to, and he saves Lamar enough times for it to be a running joke. The other endings see him changing a core value and have never set right with me.

I didn't do Deathwish during either of my playthroughs. I hate the thought of killing Michael or Trevor because it's wrong in so many ways. It's evil, treacherous, and very out of character for Franklin, who's proven himself to be immensely loyal to those he's close with, especially figures like Lamar and Tanisha, as well as Michael and Trevor. The consequences are dire and your enemies will stay walking in the process. In addition, Franklin's ties are broken as a result of his actions, and he can't face what he's done, hiding the truth about Michael's killing to Jimmy after The Time's Come, and in both that mission and Something Sensible, his ties with the survivor, Lester, and affiliates of his target are severed. Moreover, these endings show a cowardly side to Franklin, who chose to hit his target because of all the heat coming down on him from the FIB and Devin Weston, especially given he's just robbed the Union Depository, among the other crazy events that have taken place over the last few months. Franklin isn't a spineless sack of crap, and I'm glad Deathwish is canon.

16:30 actually no, while michael will absolutely kill if it is neccesary for a goal of his, he doesn't enjoy randomly killing people. he tells trevor "you didnt have to do that!" in prologue after trevor shoots the guard in the head to save michael, he doesnt kill the janitor for the fib heist and he's even willing to give up a gold bar to casey in the subtle big score heist. gunning down civilians is just something the player can choose to do

I agree but to be fair, the “You didn’t have to do that” line was because Michael promised Dave that it would be a clean job with no casualties, so once Trevor killed him, that was thrown out of the window and it would complicate his witness protection program a little. If this wasn’t the case, Michael probably wouldn’t have cared that much about the guard’s death and may have thanked Trevor for the help.

It only makes sense to have a separate ending that goes "go kill Trevor with Michael and then turn on Michael and kill him, basically backfiring at Michael for what he did in North Yankton, and also "succeeding" his mentor. The C ending where everyone survives doesn't make sense after time and time game showed that Franklin "despised" them both for many reasons, Trevor being an uncontrollable maniac and Michael being a filthy rat, who just cares about himself and doesn't care about loyalty and friendship.

I view it as Franklin breaking the cycle, and getting rid of the dude grooming him into the life of crime. Franklin calling Lamar, who hasn’t really talked to in awhile, is indicative of that. Franklin kills his mentor, then immediately calls Lamar, not his “partner in crime”, but his buddy. The dude who has been with Franklin for years. It says a lot about Franklin’s mindset after killing Mike.

My favorite always was Michael, he seems the most complex out of the three. Nothing too exceptional or anything, but I really like how fundamentally flawed his personality is and how aware he is of that. At it's core he is a bad person, and seemingly always was considering what he says to his psychiatrist, and even when he tries to amend things and start anew, his violent persona ends up raising two brats who hates him and an unhappy marriage filled with misery. He sacrificed everything and everyone he loved for a new life that he hates. Of course he would end up being a bitter asshole. Despite everything he says about him, he obviously loves Trevor even after killing him in ending A since a couple in game days later, he basically blames Franklin for it and blocks his number, a very obvious way to cope and deflect guilt. And just personally I love how he is written, his sarcastic banter and petty speech is just so funny to me, and of course Ned kills it with his performance.

I liked your commentary on Trevor and Floyd. However, I think in some weird way Trevor cared about Floyd. The moment he hears about Debra cheating, the tone in his voice shifts to one more angry and defensive. Then later down the line a news report following the mission says that a man was found shot in the head and a woman stabbed to death. Implying that Debra shot Floyd and Trevor stabbed her in revenge. Plus that distressed look after he comes out looks much closer to grieving for someone he cares about than a "What the hell have I done?" sort of face

Idk how much importance that dialogue in that hangout mission has. I don’t remember playing it, but the story definitely would’ve gone way differently if it Trevor didn’t care as much about Brad. Before the union depository he mentions Brad when Lester doesn’t/only mentions T, M and himself when he is referring to the past. Also Trevor went to Luddendorf to see if Brad was in the coffin. I gotta admit though that it‘s controversial, since Trevor went there to see if the story of Michael being in witness protection was fake, therefore exposing Michaels lies. He doesn’t go there for Brad specifically, but also he‘s partly there for him to see if he‘s in the coffin. Trevor was also the closest to Brad out of him, Michael and Lester. For me there is just too much indicating that Trevor at least somewhat cares about Brad, especially when he has a lot of conflict with Michael

I like most of you’re points, although Micheal makes it very clear in the game that he was just trying to make sure that his family would be safe. Trevor was an unpredictable psycho with a criminal background, he couldn’t be trusted around Micheals family, Micheal wanted a way out of his criminal life, he was unaware of how much that life really meant to him. The North Yankton Heist is a good example of that. Micheal wanted a way out while his criminal *family* Brad/Trevor wanted to keep taking scores which according to Micheal would eventually end up in his death, which is reasonable thought when you think about how dangerous the heist were that he was taking on with them. Brad wasn’t as innocent as Trevor either as Lester and Micheal mentioned Brad was very annoying and down right stupid at times and was always leading them into bad situations, Micheal didn’t even want Brad dead he wanted him in prison, which is harsh but when you’re in the criminal life and making bad decisions you have to take that guy out of you’re crew so it’s almost generous of Micheal not have Brad killed.

I remember hating Trevor's character and sympathising most with Michael when I first played gta 5. If Franklin chooses to take Michael out, Trevor outright refuses to help Franklin, even when he'd previously stated that of anyone was gonna kill Michael, it would be himself. Trevor never planned on betraying Michael, even during their early friendship and partnership in crime, Trevor only wanted to cut Michael off, not kill him. Trevor DOES admit to considering killing Michael, but was stopped because, despite having no remorse for Amanda, he loved their kids dearly. After doing the deed and killing Michael, Trevor will call Franklin out as a traitor, should Franklin and Trevor run into each other. Trevor scorns Franklin for killing Michael after everything he'd done for Franklin, and warns Franklin to stay away from him after he tries insisting that Michael was just using him, claiming he "could not be trusted." At the finale of Deathwish, following the crew's murder of Devin Weston, when Michael says that they're gonna keep a low profile and return to their regular lives, Trevor chimes in with "as friends." This shows that he genuinely loves Michael and Franklin, and the first hangout between Michael and Trevor after this mission has Trevor apologize to Michael for everything he'd put him through, and the two finally agree on one thing... Brad was a dick.

Sad, since this video is very well put together, but you seemed to have missed alot of crucial moments in the game to support an interpretation of the character which the game seems /determined/ to say is not true. Also, killing Micheal is definitely the bad ending. You kill your friend for no reason because you think he's using you against the evidence. Killing Trevor is not a good thing, to be sure, but he's a serious threat to everyone around him and can/will get either of them killed. Micheal's message is not to use others. It is to, at the end, care about yourself the most if you have to. He doesn't use everyone around him just because, if he has to, he'll use others as a scapegoat to save himself.

It's very hard to believe how gta v is one of the most known games out there, but there are barely any analysis videos on it So many channels just say "GTA lV good. V Bad" I recently replayed GTA 4 on PC at 60 FPS. It's a fun game. But the story ain't anything special. Having a depressing plot doesn't automatically make a story good. And even then, a lot of GTA 4 is Roman talking about how Brucie has small privates ir Roman pooping himself. *such mature story telling* The villains are *really lame* . Dimitri barely does anything. His betrayal isn't as impactful as Big Smoke's betrayal. The missions are terrible. None of them are a challenge. They're all either scripted chasing missions. Or really bad assassination missions. Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA V have way more creative mission design. Yeah. Those games have bad missions too. But not as many bad missions as GTA 4. *Money* is so useless in GTA 4. In Vice City, you needed money to progress the story. In SA, you earned money by taking over territory. You need money to gamble at the casino, buy property. In GTA V, yeah, money for the single player is kind of underused. But at least GTA V let you buy more stuff than GTA 4. Liberty City has nothing to offer but guns I guess. The clothing stores are limited. *where is the gym?* in SA CJ learns more fighting moves than Niko*

People seem to idealize Trevor to an unsettling degree. Yes he has redeeming qualities. Yes he has a sad background. Does that offset: - Routinely threatening and bullying some of his closest associates, both of which view him genuinely as a friend (Wade and Ron) - Starting massive Gang wars for no other reason than for shits and giggles? (Lost MC and Triads) - Trying to steal a top-secret superweapon from a PMC to sell it to hostile nations abroad - Disrespecting a major part of their crew because of his disability (At least from what we see in the story, GTA: O arguably turned Lester into one of the most despicable creeps in videogame fiction) Every character we see Trevor interact with that he has known for a prolonged period of time is absolutely terrified of him. That includes some pretty hardened people, like Dave. Trevor getting killed would at least be the most logical of the non-canon endings.

Trickle-down economics can work if you realize it requires the government to still do stuff to help it trickle-down. Regulations force companies to work for the common good, not against it and should be used to their full effect. For example, if the energy market was more regulated in Texas, the power would still be on. Some might say in that example, it would mean increased costs. That's why you regulate that companies can't raise prices on essential goods if they can reasonable pay their executives less. Another thing required for trickle-down to work is adequate investment in infrastructure, if you have third-world trier infrastructure as we do currently, the profit margins are way less, causing corporations even in profitable industries to become scum-lords in order to scrape enough money to survive. And it prevents any new competition in markets depending on infrastructure, like shipping and railroads. Also letting unions exist (with reasonable regulation) is also essential for trickle-down to work. I don't know why I wrote this to a 5-word comment on a GTA critique video, I guess I'm bored lol.

Grand Theft Auto 4: acted more like a full on movie. If you also include The Lost and Damned/The Balled of Gay Tony as well. It still connects with many other parts of the story, they all happen around the same time and Niko, Johnny, and Luis butt heads at each other even without them noticing it like how Johnny was the one who kidnapped Roman to Dimitri's men and Niko had to get Roman back who didn't even know that the same man who helped out is the same man who kidnapped his cousin. It brings a lot more of this movie vibe that shows many sides of the story. Grand Theft Auto 5 has that Episodic feel where one episode has Franklin and Lamar doing there thing, while the next episode has Micheal reunite with Trevor. Tbh, It would be infinitely more interesting if the main antagonist was Ray Bulgarin, and not Dimitri, he's literally the driving force why Niko even moved to LC, that as well as the desire for revenge, and he literally showed himself to Niko and made me think he's some sort of bigger antagonist than Dimitri, but it turns out it was a mutt and Luis is the one doing Niko's work for him, biggest missed potential to see what kind of interaction Bulgarin will say to Niko.

My opinion on each character, their development and how it makes them relatable. Franklin, Franklin begins as a young man trying to move up in the world, but is being held back by the environment he lives in and his friend since childhood, but as he begins to, the new friends he makes end up bringing him into a life of crime that maybe could have been avoided. He ends up in a similar situation to Michael by the end, with an opportunity to betray his friends and live alone in an expensive home. But with the death wish ending, I think he learns to avoid making the same mistakes Michael did but also know to move on unlike Trevor. Michael, Michael is a man with a family and a life full of regrets and misery. As he's dragged back into a life of crime after an emotional outbreak with his wife. And as he realised his betrayals to his friends and mistakes, he tries to move on to a more comfortable life with movie production, but as his past catches up with him, he desperately breaks away and ties loose ends with a series of heists. With his family life repaired and life as a producer secured, Michael finally confronts his mistakes and moves on from his oast like he wanted to. Personally, people who think Michael is the bad guy or the correct option to kill, don't understand Michael and his arc personally. Trevor, Trevors story is one of a young mans dreams being broken down, his thoughts manipulated and his heart broken, and can't move on from the past, and his insanity takes him through a dark, repetitive cycle of revenge and crime against people who put his friends in danger multiple times but is always honest, loyal and trying to reconnect with his friend. The Deathwish Ending is the only one that can show all of these three and their progression. GTA is fantastic. And it'll always hold a place in my heart.

100% agree with your outlook on Micheal. People ALWAYS say that he uses Franklin for his own personal gain, and while there may be small instances where he did, I never once thought he didn’t care for him and truly wanted to protect him and guide him right. Choosing Micheal’s death and hearing Franklin say “I was your bitch, I could have been staring at the barrel of your gun any day” I was like wtf??? I never ever in my life thought that would happen. Sure it happened to Trevor, but that’s because they have history and a deal was made. I feel like Michael has learned enough not to do that again and how much it really ruined him and Trevor at the time. He’s not a great guy, but that doesn’t mean he can’t redeem himself.

When it comes to Michael, he reflects a lot on the past, his own past and also the times he grew up in, as he enjoys watching old films and making references about movie montages. But this hidden desire to get back to his old ways is something you can see that in his character trailer. The song that plays is "Radio Ga Ga," by Queen, the lyrics talking about the era of the radio before television, appreciation of how important it was as a source of news and entertainment to many including the narrator, and how it shouldn't go out of style and simply become background noise. But as you listen to the song in Michael's trailer, the are meant to refer to him, Michael's past, Michael in his heyday, and the line that really hits the hardest: "You had your time, you had the power You've yet to have your finest hour."

I roleplayed Michael becoming a better person, accepting help from the shrink and eventually not even wanting to steal cars anymore, rather ordering a taxi when lost without a ride. In the end the psychological report I got was actually positive, stating that he only wants to do the best and is becoming better. That he is only partially unhinged.

I think what you miss about the Kill Michael ending is that Franklin only did it because Weston, one of the fake pyramid scheme SOBs told him to do it. Franklin even asks for more work from Weston after the ending but he tells him to fuck off. It’s just as much about becoming a jaded “three bit gangster” who’s only out for himself as the Kill Trevor ending was.

So if we treat the game as a tv series that means for example the season finale for season 1 would be the jewelry heist ending with a teaser for Trevor Phillips and season 2 would be Trevor Phillips mostly ending with him reaching Los Santos.... Something like that to imagine.

Season 3 would be from when trevor meets michael again, to the end of blitz play, s4 would be from the mission where you race against two guys to steal their cars for devin, to when Michael and trevor have to evacuate to the desert. Season 5 would be from the mission after the one where they evacuate, to the one where trevor gives patricia back to martin. Season 6 would be from the mission where trevor kills floyd and debra, to the wrap up. And finally season 7 would be from the mission aftercthe wrap up, to the ending

I personally think GTA V’s story was one of the weakest in the series, however I don’t see a lot of people talking about Michael’s resolution with his family. Towards the end of the game he ends up becoming happier with his wife and children, and they all start a progress towards healing. That itself is a great redemption for Michael to show he isn’t completely messed up towards the end and that he has some kind of soul. Even in the loading screens for Michael he seems genuinely happy when he’s hanging out with Jimmy and Tracey, and happy when he’s waking up with his wife. Michael’s family serves as a great turning point in his lifestyle at the end, and I believe that this is why his redemption is pretty dope.

Michael didn't intend to use Franklin the way he did. As soon as Michael knew Trevor is back and fib is using him he asked Franklin to get out of town but Franklin denied. Not Michael's fault for what Franklin went through

I always that that the game was trying to tell you that: Being money hungry will give you temporary highs but you’re sins will catch up with you- Michael Choose your friends wisely and even your closest friends can sell you out and dumb loyalty will get you nowhere-Trevor Franklin- who is a bit of both characters and still learning about the world yet not being stupidly loyal to everyone as he’s very skeptical of everyone and even Lamar at times and he just wants money but doesn’t want to go too far to get it until he’s roped in to the promises he sees in Michael but when Trevor comes in Franklin sees what he could’ve become and decides one big score is better than 100 small ones with a possible enemy he decides he doesn’t want to deal with the Michael and Trevor after the job. That’s always why I thought Franklin doesn’t have a death option in game is because he learnt those lessons early where Trevor and Michael simply didn’t have the will or resources to learn during their lives. In short Michael- Lots of Money, No loyalty or true friends Trevor- Trustworthy when you’re in his good side and can always count on him, no money no success lives in poverty selling drugs. Franklin, Who by the end of each story option has a good amount of both and knows what he has to do and why and when to do it. Franklin, The idol youth in our hypocritical corporate society run by the wealthy and worked on by the working class.

But Trevor has money even in the beginning of the game and an expanding drug empire. It's just that he isn't a hypocrite like Michael and so doesn't want to live his life in a mansion in los Santos so he lives in Sandy shores instead. Not to mention he needs to live their so he can run TPI

@@devinweston8983 Trevor’s drug empire is what makes him a hypocrite, he hates the system, but instead of rebelling against it in any meaningful way he aspires to become just another Capitalist running a business. We also see in his interactions with the Altruist Cult that he is willing to sacrifice peoples lives for his own financial gain. The only meaningful difference between him and Michel is that Michel is willing to get some of his friends killed while Trevor is only willing to kill strangers.

@@ando5185 the altruist cult part isn’t cannon confirmed by r* and trevors character is a lot more nuanced than you’d think like when he’s torturing that guy you’d think nothing is off limits to him then he shows him mercy then on top of that he tells him how immoral and how it’s ineffective when he just tortured him but this isn’t a character inconsistency trevor tortured him for fun he never even thought that torture would get information out of him I feel like that’s the same way he feels about his drug enterprise Trevor doesn’t have a company for wealth or fame he does it for violence and just because he can’t think of anything else to do
