The dialogues in Hitman are outstanding! I remember one, when disguised as a mascot, you are waiting for a "job interview" with Sierra and talking to her guard: - Your choice of attire is a little... off for a job interview. - My suit is at the cleaners. - And you couldn't find anything else to wear. - Correct. - You must lead a very interesting life, my friend. - You have no idea.

i learned early on that anything that can remotely kill anyone in-game is there because the devs put it there so you can use it for killing, it's just a matter of finding out how to use it for your murderous intentions :D case in point the sapienza ruins cannon, if you already know that caruso will be practicing his golf swing where the mansion side cannon is facing, it doesn't take much imagination to realize that you can use it to blow him up to the next country. same goes for the dock side cannon for de santis.... :D

It does have quite a dark message though. Makes you second guess all these supposed “accidents” that are easily brushed off daily and the government as a whole. It reminds me as to how easily a murder can be covered up and how psychotic and predatory some people can be. Ill be playing the game and cringe to myself knowing the type of wild fantasies some nutjobs surely are having, especially when considering the type of opportunities you’re presented with. Im all for it if it gives them a place to vent, but we’ll never truly know. It was a sort of psychological self evaluation for me. Sure ive dicked around and mowed down entire maps but got bored quick. It’s about who you really are when presented with vulnerabilities. Personally i like to wear tactical gear and roleplay as a spy and only kill those who deserve it. Some people would definitely go for more sadistic approach. I know it’s a bit of a reach but on a serious note it makes you question yourself and the moral values of others. And if it doesn’t it should. Do i enjoy this? Why do i enjoy it? What would others be doing? Does he/she deserve this? All questions that instantly come to mind when playing. Maybe I’m over analytical but these days you need to be.

Or when you try to enter Silvio Carusos mansion as the cyclist, the guard says "No way in hell you're getting in looking like that, I can see your junk!" Or when someone sees an overflowed sink or some other mishap. "Just stay calm, count to ten. One.. Two.. Three... FUCK IT!!!" It's incredible they did all this dialogue for so specific situations

His alias is named after the grim reaper and every conversation includes something about death or gruesomeness. He could walk up to the target, say "I'm here to kill you in exchange for money from a client you have made angry with you" and they'd laugh it off as a joke and immediately dismiss their body guards so they can go lean over a balcony below a hanging piano next to a propane tank standing in a pool of water with a faulty extension cord in it alone with the bald heavily armed barcode-having reaper man they met 5 seconds ago.

@@floatingpyro2050 I kinda see where you're coming from, but think about it from this angle: The producers refused to interfere with Truman's actions unless it resulted in him trying to escape the bounds of the set, or to help guide him towards narrative beats. All of the actors were required to follow predetermined scripts and couldn't really deviate from them (sounds a bit like the A.I. to me). The only reverse of this I see is that the player is aware they're playing a game and the A.I. is not, and though the game kinda hams it up a bit, that doesn't make it much of a reverse Truman show (even if it did, that would make pretty much all games reverse truman show, and thus not very interesting).

I remember trying to guide my friend through Dubai when Hitman 3 released so he could get the hang of it, but he was getting frustrated (rightfully so as I was being kind of invasive and almost parental in how I guided him), and I decided to just hand him the controller and said “you know what? Kill them however you want. Just let me watch.” He then proceeded to shove Marcus off of a balcony while he was throwing up some whiskey he had poisoned in front of tons of people, made an escape, accidentally ran into his other target on the way, killed him by chucking a letter opener at his head, and somehow got away. We were laughing our asses off at how absurd it all was. A couple of days later he had his own copy of the game and after a month or so he had Silent Assassin on every level. Then I remember much later I showed a different friend Dartmoor and my “clean hands” approach where I beat the level without incapacitating anyone but the detective and got Emma to poison Alexa. It blew his mind and he tried the level for himself, and was amazed when his decision to lie and say Zachary killed himself led to Alexa offing herself for him and let him obtain the case files without any more trouble.

Your initial approach to Hitman '16 is exactly why I thought the (infamous) episodic approach to the game's release was actually ingenious. Instead of playing through each level once and being done as you had done, I was given incentive to replay each level multiple times while I waited for the next one to come out. As a result, the game was on my mind for half the year. And I loved it. I get the argument for ditching the episodic release, but the developers don't get enough credit for doing something unique that really complemented the game's design.

There is another layer of experience you haven't explored. Try turning off ALL assistance features (most importantly: instinct, minimap, NPC markers, hints, picture in picture). You will be so much more immersed in the density of the levels; you will think harder about how to stalk your targets; you will be trying to memorize and predict patrol patterns instead of 'x-ray scanning' them; you will get to know the locations, building layouts, pathways by actually casing them personally; you will be listening behind a closed door before opening them; you will not automatically be informed about which areas are restricted for your disguise, so you'd have to analyse the environment more by what an area is meant for in that world...I could go on, but it's best that you see it for yourself.

@@gangstasteve5753 Well I mean isn't that part of the fun? Think about it like this, if guards are supposed to be protecting someone high value chances are they're gonna know almost everyone on the team assigned to the protection detail and recognize a rando trying to blend in. And if the whole point of Hitman is to outwit your targets and their protection, you'll have to think outside the box to find a way to get close to your target and kill them and it will be that much more satisfying when you finally do it. That's how assassins work. That's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea and that's fine. Hitman is meant to be played the way *you* want to play it. And if you want to try something wacky and creative that you're not entirely sure will work then fo for it cuz the results might surprise you. Basically what I'm saying is that if you really want to test your creative problem solving skills doing what the OP listed above is a great way to do so.

There are so many cool subplots and little stories going on in each mission. Miami has one of my favourites: Robert Knox has planned to blow up the opposition's (Kwook?) car during the race, hiring a delivery guy and a mechanic. When you get to the mission, you can find security interrogating the delivery man in a room, with an evidence safe on another room. If you open it, there's a bomb inside with some instructions for calling Robert after the mechanic has planted the bomb. If you take that bomb (it can't be another), plant it on Sierra's car, and call Robert through a payphone, he'll ask you to come meet him on a walkway and will blow Sierra's car himself. This convoluted kill (double kill, because you can push Robert afterwards) has very little hints towards it, just a challenge with no description, and is located right at the beginning of the map, so easily missable, and yet it feels so full of care and attention.

You can absolutely get a perfect rating while killing in non-accidental ways, including gunshots. The rating system is based on a few criteria : 1) Bodies found -> if a body other than one killed by poison or accident is found, including an unconscious person, it counts a "body found" and your rating takes a hit, 2) Spotted -> were you seen trespassing, or holding a gun or poisoning a drink while not in a disguise which makes it non-suspicious, etc. ? 3) Noticed kills -> whether an NPC witnessed another NPC die from something other than an accident or poison, regardless of whether someone saw you do it (so sniping someone who's in the middle of a crowd for example would get a noticed kill). 4) Recordings -> if you were seen by a camera and didn't destroy the security system after (usually found in a security room). 5) Non-target kills -> did you kill anyone other than the target(s). An important additional point is that in Hitman 2 the system was tweaked in an update such that if you kill someone who spotted you or noticed a kill or found a body, any "body found", "spotted", or "noticed kill" they were responsible for gets erased (ie doesn't count in your final rating). Now obviously, if they aren't a target you get a non-target kill, but it means you can do illegal things in front of a target or have them find a body and as long as you kill them before they tell anyone (more or less) it doesn't end up affecting your rating.

@@djCatScanRL That sounds a bit counter-intuitive to me I'll admit. What's the point of making a death look like an accident if you then stuff the body in a dumpster or laundry basket ? Sure looks like someone killed that person after all, when it's eventually found after 47's left. The more "purist" runs I do personally are SA/SO/AO/NoKO, meaning silent assassin, suit only, accidents only (so only accident kills for the targets) and no knockouts, meaning no knocking out (or subduing or anything) any non-target. It can be very challenging, but it's also a lot of fun when you manage it.

@@gilless429 Thats what I like to call my ghost runs, on top of all that you mentioned I also avoid picking anything up, as if I was never there, and as of what the guy above mentioned I have done that but in no way serves a purpose to the main mechanic or strat, maybe because of my OCD or the way I like to immerse myself in these games but for instance, on my Santa Fortuna SASO run I go for Andrea then Rico and Jorge for last, I know theres and easier eay to get Andrea by doing a peakaboo technique outside her office through the window, but that to me at least was a bit lame and easy, not logical nor storywise clever, so I decided to put emetic in her water and waited for her in the bathroom, as much as I drowned her, because that was the kill I was aiming for ( I was designing a whole Hitman 1 2 and 3 run and I was working on every method and kill because I wanted the whole run to have variety as I love to headshot most my targets so I didnt want that, do andrea and ken morgan were the only two targets in the whole run that died by drowning) so anyway once I killed her I couldnt help but hide her body, I knew I was still getting SA but in my immersion it just didnt make sense, even if shes found and counts as an accident, logically Rico and Jorge would be notified and their patterns would change idk, in game mechanics it wouldnt change a thing I know, targets would still be doing their shit but I just wanted it to make more sense as a silent assassin, just like Miami, my go to kills were shooting Sierras car with the sniper and disguise as Ted Mendez and go for Robert, but I didnt feel comfortable seeing Robert all hyped and normal even though his daughter not only just lost the race but died horribly, I eouldnt be waiting on Ted to show him my guns if I just found out that, so I struggled, but manage to kill Robert first as Ted and then Sierra on my way out, shes racing, she wont know her father just died, no up until the race is over, so id say its more of a roleplay logical immersion to make the run go a bit more to the ground, realistic though , and I say I struggled with Miamis timing cause I don't run nor sprint in games, never, its so bizarre cause after more than 10 years of playing like this my fingers are already used to the necessary strength to pull the joystick forward without running, in most 3rd person games, I actually had to acostume myself to assassins creed since origins cause running was on default whenever going all the way with the joystick, so thats why making it to Sierra before the race was over was hard, also avoided any starting location other than the default for story purposes so yeah it was tough but made it ;) sorry for the long ass text I guess I never talk to anyone about things I like, have a great one!

The points you brought up for Hitman 2 also applies to why I loved Blood Money. I remember sitting above an elevator in Blood Money and just choking out everybody who entered the elevator. In the real world, the guards can just shut down the elevator and deal with this situation pretty easily, but with NPC logic they keep entering the elevator to arrest me, only to meet their doom. It's hilarious and precisely matches some of what you said as to why Blood Money, HITMAN and 2 are great games.

Whenever I settle for killing everybody in You Better Watch Out I always begin stealthily by killing all the guests that ride the elevator. What you were saying about the guards being quite smart but being readable so they seem dumb and how it leads to ludo narrative harmony is so accurate. I never would have thought about it like that. The guards in thief and thief 2 are a similar situation in my opinion they were advanced for their time, but they still seemed quite stupid. This just reinforces the image of force of drunken apathetic idiots being used as guards, and you feel the same way about them that garret does, that you are better than them, and you can easily out smart them so therefore you dont need to kill them and can instead toy with them and circumvent them entirely.

@@tormentor2285 Belladonna is hallucinogenic (it's a deliriant). The right dose will just give you terrifying hallucinations, large enough doses raise your body temperature so much that you die. Belladonna and related plants were used as both poisons and drugs for ages. Datura, which contains the same compounds and has the same effects was used by indigenous South American shamans as a drug in addition to Ayahuasca. Many people have accidentally harmed themselves on non-lethal doses of Datura, Belladonna, Mandrake etc. a person in Germany under the influence of Datura severed his tongue and penis in his garden while tripping balls on Datura. If one is responsible enough and knows how to dose drugs like this without harming themselves then they can use it, otherwise irresponsible people like teenagers looking for a legal high take large doses of drugs like this and die or end up in the hospital/mental hospital because of irresponsible use of deliriants. Deliriants also cause mental harm along with physical harm, most people forget the majority of their trip. Common hallucinations include arthropods (typically spiders), shadow people, something that appears like text on walls, seeing everything as being darker and hearing voices, diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in large doses also causes hallucinations like that. Belladonna and other similar plants or the compounds taken from them are used in medicine, scopolamine and atropine (the main compounds in Datura, Belladonna, Mandrake etc) are used as anticholinergic drugs. Belladonna, Mandrake, Datura, Henbane, Tobacco, Potatoes, Aubergines and Tomatoes are all closely related and come from the same family, Solanaceae.

I've only played the original "Hitman: Codename 47" from 2000, back when I was a college student. That one was pretty challenging and actually took itself quite seriously. It seems that a lot has changed for this franchise, though, and your "review" definitely makes me interested in trying out some of the more recent games. Thank you for that!

The first one I ever played was Silent Assassin. Which was the second iteration, but the first on consoles. It is still my favorite in the franchise. Even if the mechanics are outdated, and a bit of a hassle to deal with. Those games were darker, and had a more serious tone, but still implemented a good amount of humor. Dark humor especially.

The last one that took itself serious was Absolution, but it was more linear than the others so it wasn't as liked, art design and aesthetic was 10/10 though and the story and atmosphere were great. Gameplay was sadly not a good fit for Hitman but I still think the game gets a bad rep regardless. I wish they kept the certain cinematic approach Absolution tried. (I realize it was flawed in it's execution though.)

This is why I cannot wait for the third game, it's gonna be amazing, especially with the inclusion of the other two games for those who already own them, plus their save data so they don't have to redo their completion of either game. Here's a fun story. My dad played through the first hitman games and loved them to death (no pun intended), so back in 2016 when I discovered the game on my own he got really excited, as he didn't know a new one existed. We eventually got it, and I played through a good portion of it, liking it a lot, but feeling the same way you did about the lack of content. When the second game was announced my dad and I were both incredibly excited to see the massive expansions to the worlds. We bought the game and dlc twice so we didn't have to share a save file. Interestingly, he and I had very different styles of murder. I was a more traditional artist going with accidents and more realistic approaches to situations, which worked fine of course, and I very much enjoyed playing that way. My dad however, plays like, in my opinion, the game should be played: Using incredibly outlandish and out of the box methods, tricking guards with guns, getting away with stuff you shouldn't at all, and it was so fun to watch him play the way he did. I've since been adopting some of these methods and sort of become a jack of all traits, and my dad visa versa (He recently tried doing some silent assassin suit only challenges, something I didn't find nearly as difficult as he did). Currently we're both sitting and waiting for Hitman 3 to release in January and watching for any new info about it like a hawk to it's prey, (or an assassin to his target). TL;DR My dad and I love hitman and have played both in different ways which led to antics and hilarious moments and we can't wait for the third.

I think Hitman 3, released after this video, did one of my favorite things with the inhuman machine of 47, and gave him those little human moments. Talking to the sommelier in Mendoza, giving advice to the woman on the bridge in Chongqing, these little touches of the ultimate assassin having a little something more human in him... They really, in my opinion, benefited the character a lot.

I wish more people understood that the game has so much content not designed for stealth/perfect scores runs. Every single target has a reaction if things go wrong, they all have fall back areas with guards, they all have lines that they say when Agent 47 closes in on them and points a gun at them. Some of them promise that they will kill you, some beg for mercy. Everyone that I talk to about this game say that you need perfect scores and that's "how the game is meant to be played" if that was true there would be so many less ways to go about things and the game would just restart when you get spotted.

It shows the empathetic and emotional but composed side of Agent 47, and develops the most beautifully written out character arcs.
