I had a very heated debate, (keep in mind I said, "debate," not, "argument.") With a friend about the good and bad sides of feminism. When it was over I thanked her to debating with me. I gave her a hug, and I told her that I had fun. I walked away knowing more, and so did she. There's "I don't think a single payer healthcare system would work here, here are some reasons" or conversely "I think we need a single payer healthcare system here, here are some reasons" and then there's crap like "well she should have dressed better if she didn't want to be raped" or "well George Floyd shouldn't have committed [whatever misdemeanor it was] if he didn't want the officer to stop him [and crush his windpipe]". The former can be argued for, can be debated. It brings up an actual question, which can lead to productive discussion. The latter does not do this, is instead is blatantly bigoted and defies the rights of human beings. It is necessary to hear and respect viewpoints that you don't agree with, such as the former. But viewpoints such as the latter, which do not respect people as human beings, do not deserve respect themselves. Those views must be called out so the people who advocate and hold them can be educated on basic decency. Problem is, many people in this country right now spew "views" like the latter while expecting the same respect as if they had said the former, and as you referenced many more treat people who express views like the former as if they'd said the latter; and so the line gets blurred and the discourse gets radicalized. We need to fix both if we want to get anywhere.

They'll just feel angry about it and say whatever comes to their mind. The problem really comes from people who are arguing in bad faith. It stops any kind of conversation, makes people more divided, it does nothing but harm in the long run.
@metronicmagician18163 жыл бұрын
I kind of want to add on to that ad-homenim thing with trump since basically from the get go he has done almost everything he could to anger people and be in the spotlight (even if that wasn’t his plan). From blatant racism and xenophobia with his view of immigrants and the border to being pegged as a sexist with the “grab her by the pussy” video just pushed on everyone’s buttons so much that to actually try and comprehend it all is near insanity, and that was all before he became president. Because of this we get a half bed of nails half blind rage thing going on where either you go completely numb to what’s going on just viewing it as trump being trump, or you snap and lash out at whatever is the newest thing even though that’s not the source of the anger like you said which also means that lashing out is just a temporary relief. I’m also certain trump did this all on purpose to both keep himself in the spotlight, and to allow for the more mundane but just as bad things to slip by. Like the awful awful treatment of kids, and other immigrants in those camps was more or less swept under the rug due to every other crazy thing going on, and really only came back into the lime light when a lawyer had to defend why not giving people soap and blankets was ethical. That said after that more crazy stuff happened so again it got swept under the rug for most people, and really only after his presidency are people now acknowledging it again. Seriously the dude started his presidency with an Islamophobic travel ban, and ended it with an insurrection and blatant disregard for democratic voting. Every step he took he tried angering people cause that allowed him to be in the spotlight as well as burry anything truly bad under a flood of drama.

Look, I voted for neither Trump nor Clinton. I feel that like a great many demagogues, he knows how to appeal to discontent and discord. You see, neither party in the US has been representing the people properly for a very long time. Most of the people I know want strong borders, but streamlined emigration procedure. We oppose police brutality, but also condemn rioting and pillaging. We cherish classical capitalism, but castigate greed. Yet, we are not permitted by EITHER PARTY to hold these reasoned views. People this election once again are going to hold their noses and vote for either a crass, imbecilic demagogue... or a senile career politician who has been part of the problem for 30+ years. It also doesn't help that we have a system that penalizes third options. It would be like the UK saying that Labour and Tories are automatically on the ballot in Ayrshire, but the SNP needs to raise x amount of Pounds to qualify for a ballot slot.
@tetsujin_1444 жыл бұрын
Police brutality vs rioting and pillaging is a false dichotomy - (though unfortunately I don't think either Trump or Biden is really motivated or capable enough to move us to real improvement in that situation) Once can certainly imagine a police force that was effective enough to maintain public safety and keep crime under control, and yet could manage to not unduly harass and murder black people, and deal with peaceful protests with at least the same level of respect for the lives and well-being of the protestors that they show, say, when sports fans' celebrations get out of control. (And there are cases like Victoria Snelgrove, who died from being shot in the face by police with a pepper ball after a Boston Red Sox victory - but I think generally even when revelries like that turn to looting and destruction they're not met with liberal use of pepper spray and the kind of violence by police that have happened at the riots in response to George Floyd's death) Like I guess your point is that people generally want to hit a reasonable point in between the two extremes - but the Democrats are not promoting rioting and pillaging, and the Republicans are not promoting police brutality. Both are essentially promoting modest reforms to try and address police brutality. To me the distinction is that on the Democratic side there is talk of increased accountability for police (which I think is important, but I'm not convinced their proposals are truly enough) and on the Republican side there is more condemnation of the protests (which I think is wrong because we seem all too willing to ignore the problem when there's not a protest going on). I kind of feel like your take on where each party stands was provided by the other party. :)
@itatane4 жыл бұрын
@@tetsujin_144 Thank you for the reasoned reply. In response, allow me to elaborate on my understanding of the two parties. I would be considered a Libertarian in some of my thinking, conservative in other areas and quite liberal in others. I approach both mainstream parties with a certain amount of skepticism, disgust and criticism. Like everyone alive, I filter what I see through this worldview, and note that all too often, the criticisms which each party levels at the other are uncannily accurate. (I view Trump as the Republican's version of LBJ... both crude, foul, corrupt, crafty, racist political manipulators.) Police Brutality and Rioting are not so much a dichotomy (I apologize if that is how it came across) but rather, two problems that seem to be inextricably linked by recent events. People want police and prosecutors held accountable for misconduct. But the rallies quickly degenerated into riots in many areas, and for what? It is not advancing the cause against police brutality when people wantonly destroy their own neighborhoods. By way of contrast, I saw a peaceful demonstration in Youngstown, Ohio, a city with a LOONNNGG and storied history of corruption, dirty cops, mafia, racism, you name it. The press was there was there, as was the police chief, and afterward, real reform measures were proposed and some enacted. The only problem was caused later by someone who vandalized the United Way and was turned in by a BLM protester. As for the response currently, some of the protests were met with excessive force (the reporter who got shot by a douchebag cop with pepper balls live on air), while some that were actual riots were allowed to continue unabated. I have seen no workable solutions put forward by either major party, apart from political grandstanding ("defund the police!" or "we support the police." Both hollow statements that mean everything and nothing). Here are some suggestions. 1. No alleged police or prosecutorial misconduct will be investigated internally; all will be handled by BCI. 2. No knock warrants are inherently dangerous and will not be exercised except by clearly uniformed police officers. 3. Body cams will be worn and activated via remote the second and officer exits a vehicle. 4. Civil Immunity shall not be given in cases of Police and Prosecutorial misconduct. P.S. 2 observations on police issues: 1. Police have been gradually militarized with emphasis put on an "Us vs. Them" mindset. Look up warrior training, it is a frightening mindset to instill in our police. The police also actively prefer hiring ex military personnel, even though there is NO similarity between Podunk, Ohio and Basra. It has less to do with racism, and more to do with creating a new class of people who are above citizens and look down upon them. 2. Dirty cops get a pass from politicians and police unions, and I would submit to you that the police simply mirror the corruption in councilmen, mayors and prosecutors. By way of example: Years ago my late father walked outside to see a sheriffs deputy pointing a gun at him, because he'd had the gall to shoot a dog that was killing our whole flock of ducks the day previous. The deputy was related to the person who filed the complaint and the prosecutor said in open court "I don't care if the dog had attacked your children, you had no excuse to kill it." I would posit that most parts in America are fundamentally broken... because we ALLOWED ourselves to be broken up into demographics in the first place. It goes back to that tribalistic, "us vs. them" mentality. Our politicians on both sides maintain power by exploiting the angst of the mob. The majority of us, stuck in the middle, are told to vote for the lesser of two evils, because "a third party vote is wasted." It's only "wasted" because people buy into that fallacy.

Labels enable people to decide which box to put eachother in.
@tetsujin_1444 жыл бұрын
Yeah labels are a problem. Like take "racist" for instance: we take all the racial injustice in the world and put it into that box, "racist", and generally agree that it's awful. But the reality is more complex than that. We can look back at lynchings or the Tulsa massacre (or the Holocaust for that matter) and say, "that was bad, I'm glad I'm not part of that" - putting ourselves outside of that "box" just by virtue of not embodying the *worst* things we find there. But racism isn't just a matter of those individual incidents that we can comfortably distance ourselves from, it's an everyday systemic reality that people aren't always willing even to acknowledge, let alone work against - and the fact that we are comfortably ouside that "racist" box helps people feel comfortable in that. Or someone may want to take something out of that box. Like "There's nothing wrong with 'white power', it's just pride in our own race" - and it's not a massacre or another blatant, direct, or violent form of racism (if you accept the premise, at least) so it's "OK". And then people confront each other on these issues, and say, "You're a racist" (as in the video Trump re-tweeted) - and, of course there's the whole "white fragility" thing but again, people don't see themselves in that "racist" box because that's where all the *really bad* racism is... The distinction between being "in" the box and "out" of the box is seen as an absolute and it denies the reality, that people can be in some regard fundamentally good people and still do things that are wrong. The distinction isn't just important as a way to "cater to white fragility" and allow people to do and say bad things but send the message that they can still feel good about themselves - it's important to recognize this distinction because it's the only way to acknowledge the fact that the problem extends beyond the most blatant practitioners of racism.

You cannot equate the two only because they sound alike.
@sweepingpage18454 жыл бұрын
It's not in his best interest to tweet a video out where it could appear he's directly supporting the idea of "white power." It just doesn't make any sense for him to do it. A staggering majority of his supporters would be turned off by this, thus being a net loss in support. He's since deleted the retweet, and the White House responded saying he didn't hear that part. Considering how hectic the job of POTUS is, I don't think it's unreasonable a scenario where he gets distracted during the "white power" part, while, for example, responding to someone in-person. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here.

That may be the denotation (dictionary definition), but the connotation (common/understood meaning) is closer to what xisuma said, particularly with regards to racism, sexism, homophobia, and associated stereotypes. I will agree with the spirit of your last sentence though; if we don't take the time to understand where the other "side" is coming from (and vice versa), we won't be able to find middle ground on anything and we'll never get anywhere. That said, some views truly are indefensible and need to be shut down. (for example, defending cops who needlessly murder unarmed, non-threatening people, except in the legal sense where defending == ensuring the prosecution does its job) The trick is telling the difference.

I feel like it is no long candidate vs candidate, and more of a my side verses your side. The reason so many people defend trump is because they want the republican side to win. It’s not what’s best for the country any more. It is now just republican vs democrat, which is why I personally dislike the electoral college. I feel the electoral college capitalizes on republican vs democrat, while we should be focusing on candidate vs candidate. This brings me to my next belief, which many people may disagree with; eliminating political parties. This is once again for the same reasons as before. Doing this makes it so that people don’t just make up their minds before the election that they are voting for republican or democrat. If each candidate individually runs for president, using and election system that isn’t party based, (popular vote) then I feel that people will pay more attention to the candidates themselves, rather then the parties. Tetsujin will you be saying that when whites people become the minority? Or do you just hate white people?
@landocalrissian8564 жыл бұрын
@@tetsujin_144 I'd have to disagree. I'd personally class it as racism either way. Shouting white power should never be acceptable, but neither should shouting black power. I find it interesting that it is seen as racism if a 'majority race' were making such a comment while it's seen as virtuous when it's done by the minority. In short, racism does not fix racism.

It bothers me how people are getting political issues and accusing the people who don't agree with them on those issues of being emotionless, and pushing a "good v. bad" narrative in order to promote their own political agenda. (e.g. people standing on the graves of the victims of shooting in order to make the pro-gun people seem evil) note: im 50/50 on issues like that, i was just using that as an example because it's a fair criticism or a relevant issue

Now do Biden next, his senate history and his quote “poor kids are just as bright as white kids”. His own words not a video shared from one of his accounts.
@matthewuzhere4 жыл бұрын
I still don’t get the big deal over that quote. Don’t get me wrong I despise Biden and only support him because Trump is worse, but that statement really is just trying to say “poor kids are just as bright as rich kids.” How he managed to fuck up and say “white” I don’t know, but it’s not really that bad considering that white kids do tend to come from significantly wealthier families due to systematic inequality.

matty g Now do his senate history and his tough on crime bill that brought mass incarceration to black folks
@tetsujin_1444 жыл бұрын
@@ourfamilyoutdoors7331 Yeah, and Bill Clinton had a part in that "tough on crime" stuff as well. And going farther back, the Democratic party was the principal party of segregation and of Jim Crow laws. History is messy and today's politicians weren't always on the right side of issues in the past. The poor kits/white kids quote was a pretty stupid and embarrassing gaffe, but it was a gaffe. Picking that apart has no more meaning than making fun of Trump's comb-over. It's fun maybe but it doesn't really mean anything.

I don't vote because I have serious doubts about the whole system, but I gotta say I appreciate your calm take on this stuff. Just keep in mind that most people have no problem with some shouting black power. Calling white power racist but not black power the same is blatantly unfair. Let's be fair and apply the same rules to everyone. Couldn't agree more about the divisiveness if modern politics, though!!

It is hard to believe anyone bothers to vote in the presidential election. If most people read up on what the electoral college is supposed to be they would realize the way it is used currently is unconstitutional. If the people of a state are split 60% to 40% in votes then the electoral votes are supposed to be split by the same percentages, not 100% going towards the person who got 60% of the votes. It's only because one state decided to go against the constitution and start giving 100% of the electoral votes to the majority winner and instead of upholding the law on a federal level the rest of the states followed suit because they saw how the elections could be controlled through a handful of states with this method. Imagine how it would feel knowing that your vote mattered and the president was actually chosen by the majority of the actual citizens. To top all of that off the electors of each state is supposed to take into consideration what the popular vote is in their state and use the electoral votes in that direction but they can also choose to use all of those votes towards the opposite candidate that the people voted for. Long story short there is good reason to have doubts about our system.

I swear, minecraft youtubers are some of the smartest people in the world. Alone, they could probably run the world (or at least a city) better than current presidents, businesses, and communities.

I think the way xisuma is portraying his thoughts on this matter is a good example for all who are trying to prove a point they believe in, he cuts away any past opinions and says things that both trump supporters and democrats can agree with, thank you!

I completely agree with you on the way people focus on such minute, pointless details when it comes to Trump. He seems to have massive ego problems and racist beliefs whether he recognizes them or not but it just wastes time when people actively look for any possible way to criticize him over superficial things like appearance rather than focusing on the actual problems with his actions.

Ok, here’s the thing. I don’t think he heard it. First: at least in my experience, when I first watched the video I had to turn it up and watch it a second time before actually hearing it, and even then it kind of seemed like the guy was being sarcastic. Anyway whatever. Second: he deleted the video right away, if he was a racist and wanted to promote a racist ideal why wouldn’t he just keep it up. Third: even if he was a racist, why would he post that video knowing that it had these racist ideas and knowing that he would face serious backlash (like he did) Idk maybe I’m a fool but I just don’t think that he is a racist and even if he was he wouldn’t want people to have any more reason to believe he was a racist so I just don’t think it was intentional.

I'm just a kid, so I can't vote or anything. However, my family is all very conservative. So obviously, I would defend Trump a lot since I live in a pretty liberal area. But as of late, he been so... stupid. He is the PRESIDENT of the country, he should know better than to act like a three year-old. I never particularly liked him, but I agreed with many of his policies. However everything he has been doing lately has just made me completely loose any sort of respect I had for him. He needs to leave twitter, all he does is make a fool of himself. I wish some more moderate people could run and win, but unfortunatley the extremists for both sides scream the loudest, completely drowning out any and all semblance of sensibility in the government. When George Washington became president, he warned our country about becoming to divided by political party. And now it is ripping us apart. I'm honestly scared for the elction this November, because Trump has proven he is not worthy of being president and Biden has some of the craziest ideas ever. I feel like our country is digging itself into a hole we may never get out of.
