SLB is not known for realistic anything..... Devdas' set looks nothing like a village in Bengal, Gangubai sets are grand and look nothing like the actual Kamathipura, Bajirao Mastani's set looks nothing like the actual Shanivarwada (according to historians Bajirao Peshwa made it a point to keep it modest) I don't think Heeramandi was ever intended to look like the real Heeramandi. I agree, they should have worked on the character development but I have had this complaint with almost all SLB projects post Black.

Respectfully disagreeing with your rather harsh review . High points ( for me as a viewer ) The sets were stunning and so what if SLB has done superb sets before …let’s appreciate the nuanced and exquisite details of This set . The actors and their Urdu pronunciation is for Indian non Urdu speaking audiences ( we couldn’t really tell if it was wanting and we could Comprehend it ) …I believe there were dialogue coaches and the actors tried hard to get it right acc to the interviews they gave . Urdu wasn’t t their first or second language let’s not forget . In an 8 part series every actor cant give brilliant performances…Sonakshi and Aditi , Taha and even Richa Chaddha were fab imo . The music and songs were beautiful….in a web series you will never find A memorable song ….the formula is simply different . The music blended with the aesthetic of the movie v nicely … The best part for me was the portrayal of strong women ..every one of the female characters …so even if the reviewers feel the story , setting, historical authenticity etc etc aren’t up to the mark….cant deny that the makers of this series have given the audiences so many compelling female characters Overall it was a fantastic watch …the audience doesn’t pick apart every nuance or fault of any production..it’s all about what you feel when you’re watching and after you have watched it . For me…felt entertained thoroughly and a tad proud that we in India have directors , d o p s , actors , set designers, costume designers , script writers etc etc etc who can deliver an aesthetic and scale of production as this . Well done team Heeramandi 😊

so guys...yours is probably the only pak. show on content that I watch...appreciated it! you guys are spot on and pick on significant topics discursively. Now, for the first time, after watching this review of yours for Heeramandi, I have comments / suggestion / feedback for you : 1) yes, it was good you reviewed the full series together! Would not have made sense to review episodes separately. 2) yes, your views are noted, and agreed to a great extent... 3) now the BUT -- your voice and tone may have been a little less critical had you not been in a position where you watch such a series in one go...within 24 hours...and then sat down to review it as well, in that span of time...sorry guys, thora injustice ho gaya hai... 4) series was intense for a full-on 8-episodes' watch in one go. I saw it in 2-parts...and at the end, was moved to go back to check on epi. 2 for story consistency...and felt it quite attractive. Story-telling and characters were strong! 5) why judge the entire cast to be the B-graders in terms of actors...that was very harsh! 6) Amna mentioned this was fantasy-fiction...that is what your overall review missed upon. Along with the name Heeramandi, the sub-title was The Diamond Bazaar...which brings forth the sense of sparkle - chamak - sparkle! It was an exaggerated, out of the world show of dazzle, grandeur in fantasy fiction, OTT platform. Nothing to do with depicting Lahore...and its past...and nothing to do with Pak. dramas...I get it...I get the correlation and comparison to the process of Jackson Heights, but to me, that was unnecessary guys.... 7) you ruin it by comparing it with SLB movies...format was different and kudos to him for that! probably the longest comment I've ever written online...I'll stop here :) Keep it up!

Ture but the point is HM isn’t fictitious at all but based on a place that existed. So to chalk it up as oh he did a good job but not meeting the background behind seems lazy l. Especially for a Director who put millions of dollars in the project and comparing it to small time dramas on TV is ridiculous. I actually thought the same things mentioned in this review having just visited lahore the whole set of the series was ridiculous. It seems like a Mahal more then a street

Hi Hassan and Aamna, really was looking forward to your review on heeramandi, really nice review but utterly disappointed by the lack of understanding in comments section.. First and foremost, urdu WAS the language of majority of muslim population in sub-continent at that time, it was the language of nawabs. If they wanted to show a muslim majority area, the attention should have been given to it regardless of the era it depicts. Secondly, alot of indians saying that because it was pre independance, why mention Jinnah? Just wanted to ask….was Jinnah born after independance and had no role in the politics at that time? If you were to show Lahore and freedom fighters, then either skip all names or take all names? Why did they mention gandhi and nehru ay first place? Just avoid it… or if you were to take names then take Jinnah’s name too. Lastly, maula jatt is set in an imaginary place in punjab, heeramandi was/is not an imaginary place…

The reason nehru was mentioned in context of Tajdar who came from vilaayat, just like Nehru. SLB was definitely thinking about this from an artistic angle, not from a political one. Same reason for the Indian flag. There was no reason to mention Pakistan or Pakistani flag. Nonetheless, it was a one time good watch

@@kkirti2 FYI Jinnah also came from vilaayat, and was a barrister just like Tajdar who was a lawyer, and Tajdar is shown to be a muslim so it would make way more sense to take Jinnah’s name instead of Nehru, but if SLB was truly thinking of artistic angle, all names could have been avoided and it could strictly remain artistic! Secondly, you are showing indian flag on 15th Aug in Lahore who became a part of Pakistan a day before on 14th Aug, does this make sense to you for real?!!!

@zeniakhan1095 agree with jinnah point. I didn't know his background. Seems like an oversight or probably wasn't mentioned as jinnah is not looked upon as a freedom fighter in India - SLB knows best what he was thinking. I don't think the flag was shown in the light of 15 Aug. The timeline was 1920s to 1940s but didn't not reach the point of independence in 1947.

You people have been to Heeramandi in Lahore and that's why you didn't find it to authentic and thought it to be his weakest project.. But the thing SLB has never been authentic , the movies of him that you gave example of in Bajirao Mastani so many Marathi lapses were there + shanivarvada was nothing like original shanivarvada same with Gangubai Kathiawadi , the Kamathipura set was way more grand and bigger than what actually kamathipura is.. Nor the village in Devdas looked like a Bengali village.. So SLB did what he does in his other projects also it's just that this time it was Lahore so you people noticed it.. SLB has never been authentic to history , atmosphere etc. Just like Jodha Akbar he has been making firey love stories / Love triangles in grand sets.. That's it.

Contrary to popular opinion, I found Heeramandi to be a rather good watch! Among the performances, my favorites were by Sanjeeda Sheikh, followed by Manisha and Sonakshi, and then Aditi and Ustaad G (don't know the actor's name). However, the portrayal of Alamzeb by Sharmeen was the weakest and most disappointing. Considering the significance of the character, the subpar performance was a big letdown. If that is so then you are definitely a pro in reading and understanding pure Urdu as it is based on Hindi per you and Ameer Khusro, Ghalib, Meer, Akbar Allah Badi, and other poet's work should be really understandable for you. Urdu is mainly derived from Farsi and Arabic which is why Urdu uses Perso-Arabic script and it makes reading the Quran really easy JFYI. then it borrowed about 25% of words from Turkish, English, Sanskrit, Hindi, and some other languages. Hindi is derived from Sanskrit. Pure Urdu and Pure Hindi are damn different even in listening and hard to understand. However, Easy Urdu (Salees Urdu) does exist and that's what Bollywood uses in Devanagari scripts and promoting URDU in Hindi packaging. For example let's take these common words like Mohabbat, Ulfat, Ishq, and Pyar. Mohabbat is a Persian word, Ulfat and Ishq are Arabic words where as Pyar is a only Hindi word. Mohabbat, Ulfat, and Ishq are not Hindi at all but are included in Urdu. But since it is a STUPID Aim to politically confuse Urdu as Hindi it may be right for many people to recognize them as Hindi but actually, its Urdu that they are listening and learning and damaging real Hindi somehow. Hope it may help you in correcting your percentage.

@@khittaykachoudhary2360 if Bollywood uses Urdu in Devanagari scripts, it does not make it Hindi at all. If it has this many Hindi words then you should not be able to read the Quran easily or recognize Arabic words. Khotay khana sa first milay tu yeh patta hoga na!

Hi Amna and Hassan . I have always enjoyed your reviews and understanding of certain topics however this by far has been the most dissappointing review I have seen since you two started and I am commenting for the first time because I am so let down. If you were to watch a show with the thought in mind what the director had earlier said about casting before watching the show then you should have not watched it but if you did plan to watch it - you gotta go in neutral. You can't expect all characters to be portrayed like what they have been portrayed in the past like Umrao-jaan etc. I wonder you guys complain all the time of how there is nothing new , they keep repeating same thing yet when they do try something new - even then it is criticized. Even all courtesans/tawaifs didn't have the same attitude, personalities etc. Now if you have watched the show : it is mainly made on the concept : Heera Mandi (now- red light district) which was once the famed Shahi Mohalla that was dazzling with culture, courtship and the music and dance, this is where the courtesans lived. Women with financial and social autonomy, who were adept at and respected for classical music, dance, literature, politics etc - They were powerful as hell . Later when British came - it became more of a sex worker type of thing. I am surprised you think a GIGANTIC DIRECTOR like SLB would be so careless esp if he has been preparing for 20 years.Yes there are flaws and it did get slow in between . There could be improvements for sure but overall it was absolute paisa wasool. A good show is that does not leave you for sometime once you are done with it, leaves an impact and this show definitely does that to you. Acting wise : please don't bring comparisons. Manisha koraila owned it : her performance was fabulous. Sonakshi since also did her part 100%. Could not imagine anyone else doing her role. Aditi, sangheeta, Tajdar , satto, bhatto, Lajjo, saima , iqbal, ustad ji , Cartwright - they were all amazing in their roles. About Alamzeb : I am not sure - I did see the innocence/stupidity in her eyes and purity though her act , but yeah maybe more emotions and all could have helped. A man (SLB)who has access to any actor in the world maybe could have done better. But please if anyone says that they could have used a prettier Alamzeb than that is horrible. I see all commenting about body, color shaming etc etc but when it comes to this - people forget.

Worst thing is the Daadi telling her pota to go to Heera Mandi!! That’s a very ma’ayub and miyaar se giri hoi baat. None of the respectable families did that. The idea that Mughal princes went to courtesans to learn aadaab is something different. Those were different women and only for Prince and the women of the house won’t talk about them so openly and didn’t encourage their own sons to go there. It was a dhaka chupa fact. Shareef women did not talk like that and wanted their sons to go for nath utarwai

As an Indian 🇮🇳 I agree a lot with you guys It’s impossible to find Urdu speaking talafuz here in Mumbai. Casting works in different way here not necessary dialect speaking actors are casted However SLB has a trademark for granduer mega beautiful sets So let’s say they made most of what they have That is why I feel that Netflix should support Pakistani writers and creators so that they can own their cultural related work. This “Heeramandi” could easily be made in Pakistan with all the brilliant actors we would have welcomed and watched it Love from 🇮🇳❤

Maybe you guys should have not reviewed it at all or amna should have not forced hassan to watch it in one go because hassan is not in his element nor is amna. The review was not at all done with feelings. I mean bayhadh gets more excitement than this. I disagree 99 percent with the view. But the fact you guys failed to appreciate taha made me so dissatisfied. He is going to be a star people are drooling over him from the first scene. Also he is not a nepotism kid he has worked for a long time dont disregard his struggle if you are misinformed. And as to that slb has done grand productions or the series is forgettable. I am sorry respectfully its nott. This is not a movie its a Netflix series. It was made with 200crs that is close to 500 crs jn pakistan. It will take year ig for pakistan to put that kinda money in a series. Also i am not trying to be witty but even indian producers wont put that kinda money. If Pakistans economy js down As to not put that kinda money in, consider that Bollywood is in decline as well. And i feel most of your views were offended because it was named heeramandi or the fact that pakistani actors were asked for the role or that the flag and stuff. You watched it as “pakistani” critic and was unable to (human nature) get over the bias and not get offended. It wasn’t a review of a pure critic. And also you failed to mention fardeen khan. Which shows how uninterested you were. Amna criticised alamzebs expression which i agree with but ironically amnas expression were very similar to alamzebs in this review. I just feel when i watch a joh bichar gaye, ehd e wafa, aangan, aur khel khel mein by keeping “indian viewer” spec aside you should do the same when criticising content. Ik repetitive but how can you fail to appreciate taha. I would like to apologise if i have hurt any feelings. Sorry in advance to hassan and amna. Hassan dont block me😂please.

Also also @somethinghaute Richa chadda was amazing. The basic idea of showing rivalry but also feminism. And the fact that all Of them were strong women.and as to the tahafuzz and all urdu is a lost language in india. People hardly noticed it. And even if it was. You guys get over the fake pathan accents all the time and appreciate the drama for what it is why not this. And also please please appreciate it was a 8 episode and done dusted drama. No leaving it on a cliff hanger to materialise the investment or trp for which you applaud the people who end the series in 8 episodes in your own nation. And those who dont you whine but still appreciate the art and hassan ends up giving them exemption also.

I haven’t seen an Indian series being discussed , analysed , assessed so much ! There are posts , reels ,articles coming out everyday based on this series - discussing the history of courtesans , jewellery, clothes , architecture , etc. Suddenly even Pakistani creators are posting reels on the actual Heera Mandi in Lahore and how it looks today. I am sure even the localities are surprised by the sudden attention. Never heard Pakistan even talk about the present day Heera Mandi at this length . Rather people used to call it “ Badnaam Mohalla”.See , the execution may land sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t , but it’s important to have a vision in the creative field . I personally found it average but his vision and passion for art - aesthetics is commendable and such people help in sustaining the cultural fabric .

Height of jealousy, shows in Hassan’s tone. Heera Mandi's history goes back to the 17th Century. It was first called the 'Shahi Mohallah'. Then changed to a Heera Mandi and it was a part of India. It was there the same Heera Mandi when Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the king of Lahore. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was also smitten by the beauty of one dancer of Heera Mandi, named Moran Sarkar. He married to Moran Sarkar. Shortly after, he was summoned to Amritsar before the Akal Takht, and Akali Phula Singh denounced him in the open assembly for violating the social rules of the Khalsa. Phula Singh declared that Maharaja Ranjit Singh must be given one hundred lashes on his bare back. The story is back from there . Then came British after Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s death. The last empire of Lahore, Punjab was a Sikh, and kingdom was of Sikhs. Lahore was the city of Hindu -businessmen before partition The time period of story had no Pakistan that time. So why are all Pakistanis creating hoo ha on this series. The series has a great story and beautifully presented. It is running as in the top ten of Netflix in 44 countries.Bhai bolo apney producers aur directors ko ke Sanjay Leela Bhansali nahi theek series bana saka to aap bana lo aur lagyo Sanjay Leela Bhansali Jitna paisa. The series has beautiful real gold Jewellery worn by the main cast. So enjoy the beautiful sets, beautifully specially designed real jewelry by Shri Paramani Jewelers for the series. Jab Pakistan waley Heera Mandi banayenge tab compare karengey who made the best movie or the series. Till then chill and enjoy the series.

Extremely biased review. Heera mandi is not flawless but immensely watchable. Except for Alamzeb who’s sub par, rest of the cast has performed well especially Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi, Farida Jalal, Taha Shah, Ustaad ji, Aditi Rao etc. The lavish sets, intricate costumes, grand picturisation of songs, brilliant confrontational scenes between the lead actors in every episode keep the narrative flowing. The ending fell short though and seemed contrived. But overall it’s a great one time watch and doesn’t deserve the condemnation and unfair dissection of its real and perceived flaws by @somethinghaute. Let go of prejudices and immerse yourself in SLB’s vision of that era to really connect with and enjoy this series.
