Aside from some slight breed characteristics, a horse is a horse is a horse. Any horse can/should be hobble trained. I consider it basic training.

Funny little story. I've got this really nice colt that's broke to stand hobbled. Couple weeks ago I put him in bell boots and leggings for the first time . Well you should have seen him seen him, he sure was convinced he was hobbled. Talk about 10 minutes of laughing and encouraging to move out.

I know in the world of old lady trail riders we are afraid of or reluctant to do it. Saw Dewayne at DryCreekWrangler demo how in one of his classes. I have worked with my gelding on the giving with a lariat but haven’t moved past it too actually placing hobbles on. We shall see. Such good info here.

From one old lady trail rider to another, please find a good, experienced trainer to work with you and your horse to get him hobble trained. It can save both your lives on and off the trail. Added bonus, when it's tinkle time, you can hobble your horse and not have to find a place to tie him or worse take him with you as some horses think it's fun to not stand still while you're in squat position 😂

Think of all those Standardbred pacers (&, to a lesser extent, trotters) who learn to move at speed with admittedly looser hopples. Horses can safely wear them with no harm and with some benefit. 👍

I watched one of your other videos and was able to teach my horses pretty quick. What do you think about hobbling the back feet to get a horse walking his front end around better?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt 5 күн бұрын
I plan on addressing your question in a video but for now let me say a turn around is a forward maneuver and the horse has to move the hind feet n order to do it. While your idea seems reasonable from inception it simply wouldn't work.

I asked you for some advice regarding a 4 year old grade qh gelding that is supposedly hancock x driftwood down in the Douglas AZ area. Sent him off with a guy to work cows out in NM. Still cold backed and broncy in the mornings and breaks saddles when tacked up while hard tied. No big deal it was worth a shot and we are all still alive. I have been watching your videos and learning a lot. One question stands out though, once you have a horse in the bridle do you end up having more issues with the bit getting hung up going through heavy mesquite?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Ай бұрын
Yeah for sure. In heavy brush or really steep country I dont use a bridle or I use a very low ported short shank bit with split reins. The California style bits are great but there is a reason the Texans use a grazer. What advice did I give you on the Hancock horse? Most of those Driftwoods are the kind that make you pucker till noon then you have to peddle them all day. I have rode a couple that were good but its been a while.

@HorsemanshipAsAnArt you said to find somebody at one of the ranches down here that's working the cattle to take the horse on for a while. I did that and I'm sure it helped some. But some horses are some horses I guess. I appreciate your time thanks again.

Horses are individuals...breed is insignificant...Also, no horse is "Bad minded" ..Horses behave appropriately for what they are: Prey animals...Humans getting frustrated that the horse isn't thinking like a human, is unfair and fool hardy..Hobbles have their place. I have no problem with them, when used appropriately.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt 4 күн бұрын
I agree that breed doesn't matter. The tag line was an effort to poke the ribs of the flat tack crowd. I disagree that none are bad minded. Just like humans and all other mammals some are just no good. I do agree that humans getting frustrated that horses dont think like us is unfair but as im sure you know I dont think of them as prey animals I think the difference is a linear and a non linear thinking animal. They dont do well with abstract. For whom does the bell toll? They dont know or care but we do.

Lets hoble you guys, teach you to be submissive and take your feet. With your bla bla story horses should not get stuck in a fence , bad example.

Windy, your inexperience should be publicly controlled by personal restraint.. I personally don't have hobbies "yet" but the leg hold had been a game changer and I'll be applying this method on these two abused mules that I'm working with.. can't hear truth with your mouth runnin' while your ears are down..

Have you ever had a horse? Did you keep it in a rubber room with bubble wrap on the horse? No? Some horses get hurt/hung up in ways you've never imagined. Yes, even those at places with perfect fences and 24/7 staff and cameras. Horses put their feet through gates frequently. Trail ridden horses sometimes get hung up on a vine, old not visible fence pieces or whatever. Even arena horses can get hung up in a solid jump. Done right, roping a foot and teaching give and hobble training, is a lesson in trust and horse believing that human is a worthy, fair leader that will keep them safe.
