Hi guys, some useful intel in there for me. I'm totally new to the hobby, but I teach Physics at a high school. It's my understanding that the rotating magnet in the brushless motor will generate a back EMF which is in fact the limiting factor in its top rotational velocity at a given voltage. The more turns in the motor will increase the back emf at a given RPM which is why higher KV motors have lower turns of coils in the motor. Lower KV motors deliver much more torque at low RPMs but cannot reach high RPMs because they quickly generate a back EMF as RPM rises. Higher KV motors have fewer turns - which gives less force (torque) and so the acceleration is less but the top end is more. It may be useful to mention this too. Unless I'm horribly mistaken - forgive me if so.

You are correct, but that being said some people increase the timing on their motors which in theory increases the kv of said motor and reduces the overall torque. Increasing the timing (magnet will switch from positive to negative or vice versa sooner) produces more heat while allowing the motor to spin faster. The reason it is able to do this is the rotor spins faster as there is more distance between the positive and negative poles trying to attract each other. Understanding how the positive and negative switches to make the rotor turn is a completely different storyline all together. All in all its very similar to advancing your timing on an old distributer powered car. Making the spark plug ignite the fuel mixture sooner so the majority of the burn happens sooner on the combustion stroke.

There's more to it then that. Like amp draw, power to weight ratio, WATTS power of the motor. Higher Kv uses less voltage but more amps in order to get closer to the (Watts) actual power. But also shortens the run time. The specs show it all. Look at the volts and amps on the specs. Lower kv doesn't just mean longer run time. It means it requires more batteries then higher Kv motors to reach it's true WATTS OR POWER you need for faster speed.

This is excellent info bro😎👍 There are however motors out there that can handle the issue most higher kv motors have, which like you mentioned, is that they have smaller can size & overheat quicker. TP power motors have a nice selection of higher kv motors with large can size & capable of handling higher voltages & current than most common motor companies offering the same kv value. I'm in the middle of working on a 4S high speed project, an Arrma Typhon 6S stretched build. Castle XLX2 controller. While the XLX2 can handle 8S & I can easily get this car over 120mph running 8S, I realized that I can run a higher kv motor, with a decent current rating, on half the voltage & still achieve high speeds & not worry about the too much current being pulled from the ESC, since the XLX2 can handle over 500A. I ran as a test an old hobbywing ezrun 2200kv motor I had on this new stretched Typhon 6S with a 34T/34T gearing on 4S. Pulled 207A from the ESC & hit 85mph. Did 3 runs back to back @85mph & i could still keep my fingers on the motor. My gear calculator estimated 86mph with this setup so I definitely was hitting max on my runs. Even with this "not top of the line" 2200kv motor, with a minor gear change & still running 4S, I should be able to get over the 100mph mark. Next motor will be either a TP Power motor or the Castle 1721 2400kv motor. Looking forward to breaking ~110mph on 4S. I know it's possible & even higher as others have already done so.

@@RCexplained Just watched, awe man... That's exactly what I wanted to see. The inside structure of these two exact motors & you got them both on 1 video lol, thanks you thank you!! 👍👍 I was just on TPs site yesterday and noticed the "regular, cm & scm" types but didn't get a chance to dig & see the differences so that was very helpful as well. 👍 One thing I like about TP is that they actually give you a "continuous" & "peak" (along with peak runtime). This is helpful when breaking down a current draw chart for the different LIPO batteries (2S,3S,4S,ect.) at max wattage. This makes gearing easier, as it lets you know what's the max gearing at a certain voltage level you can push to reach the max wattage that a motor can handle (wattage/voltage =amps). As much as I love the Castle products because they are indeed excellent, as an electrical engineer, I hate their lack of data/specifications on their products. Thanks for the awesome link & taking the time to make these videos, they're absolutely helpful 😎👍

There’s another way to do it, since the output is due to current and resistance of the motor, higher kV has lower resistance. Way higher kV would work better, higher voltage with less current is another way to do it. You can balance that with lower gearing, or even just program a throttle limit to limit the rpm from excessive kV + high voltage so it’s like lower kV motor but with less heat output, that’s done on quads commonly since the flight controller runs software that can handle limiting throttle. I have a motor in mine that resistivity may be 0.04 ohms, at 40A, gives 64W. If we move from 2s to 3s and either down gear or limit to 67% throttle, or smaller pinion and bigger spur etc, an equivalent speed would run around 26.7A giving only 28.4W of heat. Moving up in kV if you can’t move up in motor size also lowers resistance.

The video was a bit confusing? You talked about how you had maxed out the 2200kv thermally, then later said you maxed the 2650? I already am familiar with volts, kv, size, ect.. so I knew you had misspoken, or dont know what your talking about. Maybe make a script so your not so confusing? You said you were close to the thermal point of the 2200kv and near the end you said you had run close to thermal with the 2650 can, so which is it? Being you went from 2200kv to a 2650kv, you made example of the 2200kv being at its limit. I get it... but it is confusing. Love your work keep it up but mabey if explaining stuff make it more logical, hope you get what I'm saying... not dissing at all, I really appreciate your work but the vast majority will find it very confusing. My opinion, no offence.

@@jimmyv1753 😂😂yo I totally forgot about this. And I see your previous comment, I suppose when I saw it at the time I didn’t know how to respond so I just left it lol. But okay, that’s interesting info to hear. Rn I have this Wltoys 124016 with a 3650 brushless upgrade. An 8.5t mod V5R motor on stock gearing. The car is amazing and really fast. I can run laps and the heat on it is what I would say, “really warm, but not hot”. Supposedly you can run low kV/high gearing on motors that have larger can sizes because they can.. of course handle and dissipate the heat way better. So if you can upgrade motor diameter while keeping kV low, you may get away with it. Add a fan or too👍🏾😁

Higher kV motors can handle higher current loads so when properly geared, they can handle more power
@bolitapelona
@bolitapelona 2 жыл бұрын
Lower KV motors use higher voltage thus less current, less heat, longer life and run times. Lower KV is the same as getting a physically bigger motor that does not spin as fast, but has more torque. Motorcycle motors spin faster, but don't have the torque to pull a heavy load. Same for electric.
@toddleavitt3366
@toddleavitt3366 2 жыл бұрын
Also when you change KV you also affect torque of the motor too even more so when the size of the can changes too the length of the can affects heat dissipation and torque which is important when you go with bigger vehicles. Normally brushless motors will have another 4 digit number and that specifies the can size and length. A 3660 motor is 36 mm in diameter and 60mm in length. Just more to take into account

This is kind of off topic. When using 2 batteries (in series or parelle) is it true that the second battery is NOT monitored by the ESC for low voltage cut off at 3.7 volts or 4 volts DC.
@RCexplained
@RCexplained Жыл бұрын
Hi Greg. In general, if two batteries are connected in parallel to power an ESC, then both batteries will be monitored for low voltage cut off. This is because the voltage across both batteries is essentially the same, and the ESC is designed to monitor the overall voltage level. However, if two batteries are connected in series to power an ESC, then the situation is a bit more complicated. In this case, the voltage across both batteries will be added together, and the resulting voltage will be monitored by the ESC for low voltage cut off. The ESC in both situations can not detect if a single cell enters LV as the ESC only sees total voltage.

You always say that the RPM calculations are for no load condition. Will a given kv motor simply draw more current to achieve that calculated no load RPM, less some "internal" losses? Well then everything gets hot, more resistance and something burns up. As you can tell still thinking in internal combustion terms. Thx.

put it simply though its not about speed its torque we want. Thats why the 2200 is so much better than the 2650. PLUS, LOWER KV CAN PUSH A HIGHER GEAR because of the Tork.

Running a 5900kv motor in a 1\10 scale buggy it is off the charts fast but gets heat soaked quickly so my problem is I don't want to get rid of the speed but I want to make it run cooler so do I bite the bullet and downsize or do I buy a duel cooling fan setup?

You can try adding heat sinks and fans. This will help remove heat. You can also look at getting a larger 5900Kv motor to get rid of more waste heat through larger surface area.

Great videos! A little over my head at times lol. The one thing I'm trying to figure out is how much less efficient are higher kV motors compared to lower kV motors, specifically for a 7'" quad, 1300 kV or 1800 kV? Say I flew for like 20 minutes on 1300 kv would the 1800 kv be 1 minute less flight time, 30 sec, 10 sec? Or as long as you are flying exactly the same would the efficiency be about the same? I've heard people talk about setting a throttle curve with the higher KV motors. I'm just trying to figure out if the efficiency hit is worth the extra power or not.
@RCexplained
@RCexplained 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, your question is not a simple one to answer as the factors that come in to play are more then just a matter of 1800vs1300kv. To realistic determine this in your specific application, the best solution would be to test it using the exact equipment and flying style.

@@RCexplained awesome! I watched it a couple times! lol. So what you're saying is that these motors are most efficient when running at 100%, right? So the higher KV motor would be efficient as long as you are close to 100% throttle but of course you'd be moving a lot faster and at some point I would assume that drag would start to affect the efficiency, right? And I'm new to this world so I don't know what the best cruising speed would be for mountain surfing. I am a little confused because my MA2 is more efficient (can cover more ground) in N mode at about 24mph than it is in S mode at about 44mph, I thought full throttle was more efficient, what I'm I missing? lol
@RCexplained
@RCexplained 3 жыл бұрын
When we are talking about efficiency, what exactly are you referring to. Efficiency in the video is mechanical power over electrical power in. Problem is 100% throttle is not practical for most of my RC's if max run time is the goal. 100% throttle on a slower setup would be more ideal.

RC explained I have a question. Maybe I wanted to stay in the same motor size lets say 3650 and I had one motor 2050kv and another 3500kv , but I chose to to run the 2050 kv at 7.7 gear ratio overall and the 3500kv at 12:1 overall .... the tire speed will be the same for both motors, but the load will be very different because of the gears.... So the 2050 would get hotter than the 3500 because of the extra load correct ? or will it be the same roughly because the speed of the car is the same. Thank you.

I wanted to buy a 4s battery to try it out, just out of curiousty and since my esc handles up to a 4s lipo. My worry is that the battery will be damaged or explode if my esc or motor trys to pull more current then it can supply? or is that not something to worry about because the battery will only give out its max rated power? KV rating is based on 'no load' conditions. The speed of the motor will double when not connected to anything. Once a load is introduced, things change. The higher torque required to spin the entire drivetrain reduces it's ability to reach, in your case, "double", without enormous current draw.

The higher kv motor was faster I installed a large 4276 2200kv motor done my speed test with my big rock it was all tested with 3s and 4s lipos each one 80c discharge 5200mah batteries. I used multiple ESC's from a hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 3s sensored esc than a hobbywing Max 10sct and max10 than my castle SWD3 and SW4 and the copperhead esc. Motors I used was my 4276 2200kv / 4276 2000kv / 4268 2500kv / 4268 2050kv then I used my smaller motors 3660 3300kv / 3660 3200kv / 3660 4000kv and then 3668 2200kv / 3668 3000kv. And the higher KVs I got higher top speeds but the larger motors with the lower kvs where way faster of the line and seemed faster in general bashing. Even the same kv but diff size 3660 vs 4276 "Small block vs Big block" and the big motor was better all around less heat the big motors stayed nice and cool not even hot or warm on 3s which obviously these are 6s 8s motors but ran perfectly on 3s and was getting good speeds. The gearing was and is 57T mod 8 integy spur and a Mod 8 20T pinion from integy and with the lower motors I dropped pinion size down to 15 and 16 because 20T seemed to much on em even the lower KVs couldn't handle it in the 3660s and 3668s the large 4276 and 4268 big blocks done it perfectly. Which I have prob 80 to 90 brushless motors alot of em most of em anyway are still in the box never opened they are backups and I do resale em and give em away to friends ect that wanna upgrade or just simply need a new motor and don't wanna rebuild which I rebuild my motors for the most part even my sealed can brushed motors. torque is what you need to chase, not rpm/kv. I can put a 3600 kv motor on car and it could crawl if it does not produce sufficient torque, vs an 800 kv motor geared for speed and it will run because it has enough torque to reach its highest rpm under load. Car manufactures will tell you all about how much horsepower their cars can produce, but who cares to ask about the max rpm of the engine???
