My mum has been abused by my dad since the start of their marriage - beatings, slapping and kicking. One muslim teacher( a pious muslim man) told my mum to accept this since this was her way to Jannah. The muslim teacher was furious when i told him - nothing in islam condones domestic violence To him - the ideal muslim woman accepts everything a muslim man tells her. So even today - many muslim men abuse women and use Islam as an excuse. I hope that women like my mother and me ( because I too have been abused by my dad) will have justice on Judgement Day. There are many muslim ladies like us that live in muslim societies who know abuse is going on - but due to cultural factors we are trapped and the so called muslim leaders are helping the abusers and not the abused.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said: “The best among you is the one who is best towards his wife” Hadith-Muslim, 3466 It is reported that Ali (R.A) has said “Get your daughters married to those who are fearing Allah(S.W.T) if they love them they will honour them and if they dislike at least they won’t oppress them they will send them home in one piece”. If that was the case we would have read so many hadeeth of the sahabah having done that (R.A) they didn’t do that if you read the hadeeth they used the siwak ( a small stick that is used in cleaning teeth compared to the baseball bats we are using today) which was only used to draw the attention of the women that was how they understood wadribhuna. So why should we try and say no the Quran doesn’t have that verse when we go speak to those modernists and those people who are trying to delete verses of the Quran. Don’t deny it say the understanding is the understanding of the sahabah and also over and above that a woman who has been bashed you have the right to apply to the ulama to the bodies in the ulama authorities in the Muslim countries in the court and that marriage will be nullified on those grounds if it was permissible how could it be nullified. Salam~ There are people don't believe in the truth, they rather believe in what they want to And so, the non-believers want to believe in some misinterpretation of the Islamic teachings in order to sully the religion, to present Islam in a negative way. Arabic is an old and comprehensive language, 1 word can have many meanings depending on the context, the preposition coming with it,... According to a research, the phrase "idribohunna" (root: daraba) has around 30 different meanings (such as: to give example, to present, to set forth, to leave, to shun, to hit, to tap, to cover,...) And most verses in the Quran where this root "daraba" appears, the meaning tends to be "to give example", "to present",... There are verses in the Quran talking about hitting (satan and enemies), the word "hitting" used there was not root "daraba", it was something completely different. "Idribuhunna" could mean "to tap" (with a siwak (toothbrush)), like to catch her attention to the discussion, to let her know that this argument is important, we need to solve it. If "idribuhunna" here was meant as "to shun", it is also reasonable. Because the previous lines said "leave them in bed", so doesn't it sound smooth when it is put like this "admonish them, leave them in bed and shun them." So in general, "daraba" is one of the Arabic words that have multiple meanings, root "daraba" is not usually be understood as "to hit", "to beat", there is other words for that. Root "daraba" here in Quran 4:34 rather means "to tap", as many scholars said, symbolic action: just to let your wife knows that you are upset, this is getting out of hand, our marriage is at risk. Most importantly, read the whole verse and you see, this "tap" is put at the last action to take if the previous 2 ways doesn't work. "Admonish" and "leave her in bed", sleeping separately from your partner is actually really painful inside, if the wife is ok with that, then it could mean that their relationship is really at risk. To support my explanation that "idribuhunna" should not mean to beat, here are some hadiths, quotes and narrations mentioning that the Prophet doesn't encourage beating your wife. "“I (Muaviyah b. Haidah) said, “O Apostle of God! What is my duty to my wife?” He said, “That you give her to eat as you eat yourself, and clothe her as you clothe yourself; and do not slap her in the face nor abuse her, nor separate yourself from her in displeasure.” The Quran clearly says, “Live with your wives in a good manner. If you dislike them in any manner, it may be that you dislike something in which Allah has placed much good for you” (Quran, 4:19). So, God commands man to be good to his wife even if he dislikes her. Allah says, "Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, in order to have tranquility and contentment with each other. He places in your heart love and care towards your spouses. In this, there are signs for people who think." (30:21)" "And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Acquainted [with all things]." ( Surah Nisa- 4:35) (Would you beat your wife and then tell her parents: "I beat up your daughter. Could to ask her to reconcile with me?" Because this is the next step in the Quran.) As for the Messenger of Allah (sws), he said, "Could any of you beat your wife as he would a slave, and then lie with her in the evening?" (Bukhari and Muslim). There are other traditions in Abu Da'ud, Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ahmad bin Hanbal and others, to the effect that he forbade the beating of any woman, saying: "Never beat God's handmaidens." So all these quotes and information I gave, isn't that they focus on reconciliation? If a man was permitted to beat his wife to death, why would he also be suggested to reconcile with her? And another point is that, right in the beginning of verse 34 (surah Al-Nisa). "...Men are the protectors of women...". Should a protector beat the one who was to be protected? You hire a security guard and is he allowed to beat you? (Unless you are doing some harm to yourself and he needs to give you a tap to waken you, to bring you back to your normal state of mind, right?) The Quran also mentioned in other verses that "live with them (your wives) with kindness" (4:19) and "do not retain them to harm them" (2:231). If God has told you repeatedly to treat your wives with kindness and not to harm them, he would allow you to beat her? Additionally, the word "Nushuz" which is generally translated as "opposition" has another meaning which can be translated as degrees of disloyalty ranging from flirtation to sexual liaison. If we study 4:34 carefully we will find a clue that leads us to translate that word as "flirting or cheating" or "extramarital affair" (Any word or words that reflect the range of disloyalty in marriage). So Nushuz is not "disobedience" like many people think, the 3 methods of "admonish, leave in bed, tap them" is only used when the women commit nushuz. And nushuz is not like when your wife forget to do chores, or she break a flower vase,... not like that. Nushuz is wrongful act regarding loyalty, in simple words, nushuz is about cheating in a relationship. Let's say if religions and all weren't there, then when a wife cheat on her husband, and her husband find out, their could have been a murder. But Islam tells you to first talk with your wife about it, then leave the bed (this is like giving each other some space, and if the wife is regretful, she would come back to her husband), and then further discussion and a tap. These 3 steps are sufficient to prevent the violence out of anger, to prevent domestic violence, to prevent serious conflicts. I hope my explanation is easy to understand to you, these are what I have learnt after doing quite some research on Surah Al-Nisa 4:34. I also struggled understanding this verse right, and Alhamdulillah, I think I cleared my way now and Islam, the Quran totally doesn't allow beating women, instead it teaches us to maintain the peaceful state and focus on reconciliation. And Allah knows best. May Allah guides all of us. Ameen Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakaltu

Thank you for the explanation. I now understand more about this topic. It is absurd that people think Islam allow men to hit their wives on such mundane reasons, when one of the husband's responsibility is to guide her and protect her from any harm, including Hellfire. There is a reason why Allah command the advice and separate bed first, which my teacher explained that it is to calm down the husband and when there is no other way beside hit her (or tap her in your explanation) to make her understand the severity of her wrongness, he would be able to confront her calmly and avoid abuse caused by anger. Husband's role is to protect his wife, and hitting his wife until black and blue is not an action of protection, as you explained. Jazakallahu khair.

I would just say you should read the whole Quran, you cannot define Islam with just a verse. Islam is a whole big ocean and what we humans (even the best scholars) know is just a drop of water. There are 3 degrees of reading the Quran, most people read it on its surface, they understand basic meaning of the words, the sentences. Some people read the deeper meaning and comprehend it more profoundly. And rarely someone can read it in a divine level. Here I share some quotes relating to adultery you might find useful inshaAllah: "And come not near unto adultery. Lo! It is an abomination and an evil way" (Al-Isra 17:32) "They (your wives) are your garments and you their garments. You protect each other and guard each other’s chastity” (2:187). "And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them - and settlement is best. And present in [human] souls is stinginess. But if you do good and fear Allah - then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted. (4:128) "But if they separate [by divorce], Allah will enrich each [of them] from His abundance. And ever is Allah Encompassing and Wise." (4:130)

We are told to understand the Quran through the practice of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and its commonly known he never hit a woman, child or slave. So it shouldnt even be a consideration of people tbh. A person who abuses those in his power is called an oppressor which is the worst of people in Islam. People who want to do whatever they want will find ways to malign the religion to justify their actions and they'll behave like that no matter what is said to them.

The explanation to this has been given by Dr.Mustafa Khattab in his translation of the Qur'an. It states, 'Disciplining one’s wife gently is the final resort. The earliest commentators understood that this was to be light enough not to leave a mark, should be done with nothing bigger than a tooth stick, and should not be on the face. Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) said to his companions “Do not beat the female servants of Allah.” He said that honourable husbands do not beat their wives, and he himself never hit a woman or a servant. If a woman feels her husband is ill-behaved, then she can get help from her guardian or seek divorce'. Before this, the verse translation of 4:34 in the Qur'an by Dr.Mustafa Khattab mentions, 'Men are the caretakers of women, as men have been provisioned by Allah over women and tasked with supporting them financially. And righteous women are devoutly obedient and, when alone, protective of what Allah has entrusted them with.1 And if you sense ill-conduct from your women, advise them ˹first˺, ˹if they persist,˺ do not share their beds, ˹but if they still persist,˺ then discipline them ˹gently˺.2 But if they change their ways, do not be unjust to them. Surely Allah is Most High, All-Great.' This verse doesn't mean that the husband has any right at all to be oppressive on his wife! Rather, the husband will be ill-mannered and rude to do such a thing. He should take care of his wife and treat her preciously as a human being. Not as an object that he uses for his desires only or for his control and work. But that the husband should take the wife as his partner and companion in this world and in the Akhirah.

A man technically can't be rebellious to women. Qawam used to mean "leader" but now a days its meaning is also water downned and changed to "protector". A person who is below becomes rebellious of a person who is above not the other way around. A person who is above can be cruel or unjust to a person who is below. And if husband does that than woman is advise to make a fair settlement or maybe involve someone of the family to resolve the dispute and finally get separation. Not separation of beds or hitting with a miswak in case of men.

You know what my biggest problem is with this whole interpreting these verses? Is that a lot of it is ambigious and isn't straight out told. I looked up Quran chapter 4 verse 34 and this is what it says. Tell me how I am "misinterpretating" a verse that is so clear. "Men are the caretakers of women, as men have been provisioned by Allah over women and tasked with supporting them financially. Surely Allah is Most High, All-Great." This verse only tells me that Men are meant to be the breadwinner and that women are always meant to take care of the house and family. Like if you don't believe me and think I'm spouting nonsense then why are there cases of women being beaten and stoned to death in Islamic countries for disobedience?

No jurist has the authority to overturn the commands of Allah. The verse doesn't stand alone. It is supported by multiple narrators and by the example set by the prophet. When I quote Dawud to a Muslim and he or she doesn't like what it says, e.g when it talks about FGM (Adab 167), they say that it is weak and of no authority compared to Muslim or Bukhari - but here it is OK to quote it as an authority. It seems like a double standard is being applied to get the conclusion you want. Christianity teaches: "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; [...] So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.[...] Let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband." Qur'an 4:34 is there to prohibit the husband from committing crime of passion in cases of his wife's continuous infidelity I.e when the husband caught her sleeping in bed with another man. It is there to protect women against violence. The husband would naturally burst out of anger, so this verse is there to limit this to just a strike (the arabic phrase indicates only ONCE in this situation - not resulting to continuous beating and violence). The term "strike" in English is even ambiguous. I can strike a child but doesn't necessarily mean I hurt the child physically. It could just mean a physical contact intended not to hurt the child, but to gain their attention for wrongdoing. The verse begins instructing the husband that they are the caretakers over women - NOT that they have authority over women. Therefore, the context for "strike" in here is not intended to hurt the wife, but rather it is intended to gain their attention and show your feelings to them. This is ONLY in cases of infidelity and NOT a norm.

No it is a symbolic expression of displeasure.According to ibn khattabs tafseer in clear quran this word is translated into discipline lightly. So husband is allowed to express displeasure only as the last resort if the wife is rebellious. So, it does not say about hitting the wife. It is the early islamic scholars who understood this word as beat them lightly because of the male dominant culture in a war tone society. If any husband hit a women it is against the quran so a wife can get a divorce for that.

@muslim-g1x2 жыл бұрын
No it does not. Many Muslims translate the word “idribuhunna” (which is the command for m of “daraba”) as “beat them”. But that is not the right meaning of the word. The verse says: [4:34] Men are the maintainers of women by means of what God has favored some over the others, and through what they spend of their money. The righteous women accept this willingly and they guard the secrets as God has guarded it. As for the women from whom you fear ‘nushuz' (disloyalty), you shall advise them, desert them in bed and ‘idribuhunna' (separate from them). If they obey you, you are not to seek further action against them. God is Most High, Great. Verse 4:34 talks about what to do in the case of a woman's “nushuz” towards their husbands, which many people commonly translate as rebellion or disobedience. But if it were so, then this implies the man is in charge in the relationship. However, verse 4:128 talks about a husband's “nushuz” towards his wife. This implies the woman is in power. If one sex is supposed to have power over the other, then both cannot be doing the disobedience or rebellion. However, the only other meaning for this word is disloyalty, and that is the meaning that makes more sense in this situation. Bearing this in mind, we must look at the multiple meanings for the word “daraba” in the Quran and see what fits: The meanings for “daraba” as found in the Quran: To go out or travel (3:156, 4:101), strike or beat (2:60-61, 3:112, 47:4), to present an example (43:57, 30:28, 13:17), to withdraw or separate (43:5), to seal or cover (18:11), to draw over (24:31), to attribute (43:17), to establish (57:13). Verse 4:34 talks about what happens in the case of a wife’s disloyalty towards her husband. The only two that would fit and make sense semantically in this case would be to beat them, or to separate from them. But aggression is forbidden in 2:190 and 5:87, so beating is cancelled, therefore it cannot mean to beat them. We are told to have mercy towards our spouses (30:21) and to live with the wives in kindness (4:19). Beating for disloyalty is neither kind nor having mercy. So no, wife-beating is not allowed in the Quran, nor in verse 4:34.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2858 Narrated Abdullah binUmar: I heard the Prophet (ty) saying. "Evil omen is in three things: The horse, the woman and the house." The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: ‘When a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he went to sleep angry with her, the angels will curse her until morning.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3065; Muslim, 1436)

As salamu alaikum wr wb my dear Sisters in Islam. We must remember that Allah tells us of Lut (as) and his promise to whip his wife for her disobedience. First, what was her disobedience? That during the trials of our dear Prophet Lut (as) his illness, his loss of wealth, his loss of family. His (as) wife told him to curse Allah. Ahdubillah! Curse Allah!!!!!! Now with that being said. Lut (as) swore to whip her after Allah restored everything and more to him (as). And Allah commanded him to fulfill his promise. So he took a blade of grass and whipped her 100 times. Alhamdullilah A BLADE OF GRASS!!! And this my dear sisters was a Prophet (as). One who, if anyone , had the right to beat his wife for disobeying Allah. And since Allah (swt) put this event in HIS word we are to reflect upon it. The severity of the situation, his health, his wealth, his family gone. And the severity of what his wife instructed him to do. Our Last and Final Prophet (saw) understood the depth of this and this is why he (saw) NEVER struck his wives! Alhamdullilah How could anyone be beaten for less???? And of course the men of this Ummah fail to read this or acknowledge it. IF a wife is at the point of demanding you to curse Allah then by all means strike her with a blade of grass and live as the Prophets (as) lived. BUT if your wife is doing anything less then this, then fear Allah and live as the Last Prophet (saw) and NEVER strike your wife. Now the Prophet (saw) did tell his wives that if they wanted the things of this dunya he would gladly set them free. But if they wanted the next life he would stay married to them. NOW why don't our men look at those Ayahs and the Sunnah from them and live by those examples?????? And what does Allah say about those who disobey HIM and HIS Messenger (saw) ? May Allah guide us to correct understanding which is the straight path. Amin Amin Amin

The Prophet pbuh himself suggested hitting as a disciplinary method during his farewell hajj. So, to say the Prophet pbuh didn't hit his wives only means one thing which is his wives were not disobedient enough to receive hitting as punishment.

You don't need the example of Prophet Lut(AS) for this, all you need is the verse 4: 34 which *explains* when you can hit you wives.

@@sorkenyo Nope, it means strike or hit. Ever heard of the Prophet pbuh explaining the verse 4: 34 in a hadith? It's sure as hell not "separate".
