I’m so happy he stated the Quran as it is and wasn’t biased (as most Muslim scholars are when concerning the hijab). They usually just tell people their interpretation of the verses which IMO is misleading of the actual message. He also explained various Hadiths and also considered both sides logically which I really appreciate. Thank you very much for the clarification.

Secondly (it should not be an adornment in and of itself). Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): and not to show off their adornment [al-Noor 24-31]. The general meaning of this phrase includes the outer garment, because if it is decorated it will attract mens attention to her. This is supported by the aayah in Soorat al-Ahzaab (interpretation of the meaning): And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance [al-Ahzaab 33-33]. It is also supported by the hadeeth in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: There are three, do not ask me about them: a man who leaves the jamaaah, disobeys his leader and dies disobedient; a female or male slave who runs away then dies; and a woman whose husband is absent and left her with everything she needs, and after he left she made a wanton display of herself. Do not ask about them. (Narrated by al-Haakim, 1/119; Ahmad, 6/19; from the hadeeth of Faddaalah bint Ubayd. Its isnaad is saheeh and it is in al-Adab al-Mufrad). 2 - Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful” [al-Ahzaab 33:59] Here is A Clear Cut Hadith That's supports The Vases. whoever denies constitutes shar‘i evidence in general terms, or rejects a hadith of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him - knowing that it is the words of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is a disbeliever, who has not attained even the lowest level of Islam and submission to Allah and His Messenger. With regard to the Ahaadeeth: 1 It was narrated from Safiyyah bint Shaybah that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) used to say: When these words were revealed - “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” - they took their izaars (a kind of garment) and tore them from the edges and covered their faces with them. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4481. The following version was narrated by Abu Dawood (4102): May Allaah have mercy on the Muhaajir women. When Allaah revealed the words “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)”, they tore the thickest of their aprons (a kind of garment) and covered their faces with them. Shaykh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shanqeeti (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This hadeeth clearly states that what the Sahaabi women mentioned here understood from this verse - “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” - was that they were to cover their faces, and that they tore their garments and covered their faces with them, in obedience to the command of Allaah in the verse where He said “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” which meant covering their faces. Thus the fair-minded person will understand that woman’s observing hijab and covering her face in front of men is established in the saheeh Sunnah that explains the Book of Allaah. ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) praised those women for hastening to follow the command of Allaah given in His Book. It is known that their understanding of the words “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” as meaning covering the face came from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), because he was there and they asked him about everything that they did not understand about their religion. This why we look into the Tafseer of the Qur'an Tafseer ibn Katheer And Tafseer As-Sadi are some of the best. (It should be thick and not transparent or see-thru) - because it cannot cover properly otherwise. Transparent or see-thru clothing makes a woman more tempting and beautiful. Concerning this the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: During the last days of my ummah there will be women who are clothed but naked, with something on their heads like the humps of camels. Curse them, for they are cursed. Another hadeeth adds: They will not enter Paradise or even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance. (Narrated by Muslim from the report of Abu Hurayrah). Ibn Abd al-Barr said: what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) meant was women who wear clothes made of light fabric which describes and does not cover. They are clothed in name but naked in reality. There Ijmaa‘ (scholarly consensus) if the Face And Hand's Should be Shown or Not differences of opinion amongs the Scholars. I take it, that it is should be Covered Allahknowbest. AnyGood I Have Said is From Allah Any bad I have Said is from myself and Allah and he's messenger are Free From it. Hijab is not a (religious) choice, it's fardh. The choice some people refer to it as is it's a person's individual choice to follow that command or not. It's like salah, Allah has made it fardh. There's no choice in the matter but whether I choose to offer it or not is my individual choice as a human being.

@@zahednow yes, even the respected dr. zakir naik is not qualified for giving fatwas in intra-islamic matters. We really need to see what those specialized scholars tell us.... And Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW also told us to follow the sunnah of his sahaba (May ALLAH be pleased with them)... So, under this context, when the muslim women of Holy Prophet's SAW time wore that kind of head cover, it's mandatory for us to follow them as well under the hadith of Messenger SAW.

He initially referred khimar as head covering then changed his statement, gave commentary that women used to cover their head after quran verse was revealed, then again changed statement saying he is not sure. Then concluded saying yes women those times started covering their head but he is not sure whether it's obligation or not. @@zahednow people used to wear khimmer before Islam was revealed. It's mainly to keep the sand off the hair from the desert in those times. The Quran says to cover from under the neck with a khimmer, mainly to cover one's sexuality and private parts. It's a little bit different from saying 'cover your head with a khimmer and then use it to cover your chest.' The head scarf has been mentioned more indirectly, which seems like suggesting, leaving it to the woman and making their own choice. It is what it is, for those of us that dont wear a khimmer or a headscarf, in that case we can cover our selves in modesty, without the headscarf- we would still be modest since we are not sexually appealing anyone. The literal meaning by itself doesn't really impose on wearing a headscarf. There are scholars of both sides saying- khimmer could or may be not a headscarf. I see the strict enforcement of modesty by covering one's body and sexuality, but not so much on a headscarf.

What if people not wearing a head covering back then, then would statement be - take a scarf and wrap it on your chest? If it did then you would be right to say that it means to cover the head and bosom. Instead it made reference to a situation in which a Khimar was worn to say "cover your bosom". Again, no command has ever been given to wear a Khimar

Also, all women at the time were wearing a "khimar" and the Muslim women were told to pull it over their chest. So, it seems, however the khimar was worn, weather as a full head covering or some sort of hair adornment made out of cloth, it was worn by all - not specifically by Muslim women. Thus, there was no special head covering rule for Muslim women other than the bosom/chest covering.

I would like to explain an issue I have which is about the hijab. I grew up with my mother who is very strict on religion and forced me to wear the hijab, I was a little child back then so I didn’t understand what was happening and I obeyed her rules. Now, at this age I don’t want to wear the hijab because of how it really affects my confidence, and I am really afraid to admit this because I really want to like wearing my hijab and sometimes I do feel honored and proud but it really affects my confidence and I don’t feel that beautiful. My mother doesn’t really treat me fair since I live in a household with 4 brothers and no father and my brothers don’t respect women. They call them cuss words and so much more. I feel much more beautiful wearing modest clothing but without my hijab. I know that it seems I’m trying to disobey Allah (SWT) but I really respect Him and am proud to be a Muslim. I wish I had the opportunity to choose wether I should wear a hijab or not and I wish to not to. I’m in middle school right now and if I had a choice of wearing a hijab I would not until I feel comfortable doing so. I don’t like being forced by my mother and want it to stop. I really respect Allah (SWT) and His wishes but I’m sure that my happiness is sinking because of this. It hurts that I feel this way because I don’t want to be a bad Muslim. Is there any way I can solve this issue with my parents? This issue has been hurting me so much and I really want to fix it.

Dr. Shabir Ally's reasoning sounds logical and depends on mainly on the Qur'an since the authenticity of many hadiths is questionable...unlike some other Muslim scholars who just quote a hadith or part of a verse without examining it in detail and just decide something is mandatory or prohibited. I believe the headcover is optional and what's actually important is to be modest in our words n actions. After all, the faith of a believer depends on their intentions and actions, doesn't it?

There is a LOT of chance for part of it to go wrong or be passed down differently than the original hadith. That's y hadiths are classified into strong and weak. Also FYI, Hijab is MANDATORY in Quran, but hijab means screening or as we may interpret it, modesty. I believe it is left intentionally vague as to suit different cultures and the changing times. What may be considered modest in Europe may not the modest in Asia and vice versa. So in my opinion, modesty in our own culture is what is mandatory and not covering up the hair.

Salaam alaikum! I, too wear modest clothes without hijab, and even had my hair cut very short as not to cause temptation. I hardly think my hair will cause a guy's hormones to go crazy , my gosh! I have no illusions as to my 'beauty' (lack of it in fact) I don't wear make up either (just the loose powder and light lipstick to look normal at work) . I make a lot of mistakes and feel afraid that Muslim women might get stereotyped (because I am the only Muslim employee), not to mention the heat and humidity in our island. Nevertheless I wear hijab during religious activities and pray the usual prayers in my spot at the classroom . I believe that the surah was about modesty and doing one's best to not attract men's lust so I feel OK with my choice though I feel pressured by lectures to wear it.

Zana it does not state in the Quran or hadith any punishment for women who do not cover their heads so it can't be such a bad thing not to. People have made their own rules saying it is compulsory. You can tie your hair in a tight bun (so to not reveal it) and still be modest wothout a hijab. If you wear a high neck blouse and loose clothing that covers your whole body I see no real difference. There is nothing sexual about a low bun.

Here in the United States both women and men from more conservative religious communities can be identified by dress that covers the body tastefully without entirely obscuring the Human form. For instance, women's dresses that are hemmed below the knees and sometimes to the ankles are common. Likewise men in long-sleeved shirts that are buttoned in the front are typical. I think modesty is less a behavior and more of an attitude. FWIW.

This is the problem with this scholar, he has half knowledge and is giving answers on that, creating more confusion in muslims. It is a compulsion that's why Allah use word Khimar (which itself means head covering). Had this not been compulsory then another word would have been used. @@zahednow in the desert almost everyone covers their heads because the overbearing heat and wind was difficult on the eyes, nose and lips. So what was already on the head was ordered to extend over the bodies when women began to complain about harassment. This does not mean that the head covering was mandatory, it wasn’t specifically addressed because it was already being done, nor would anyone need a reason to remove from the head because it was simply needed in that climate. There is a reason men wore a garment on their heads, and they still do in the desert. ... now socks are specifically meant to wear on feet... that’s a silly comparison.

I’m just gonna say this now, but I would love to wear the hijab, but, I also love cosplaying and I already do cosplay at home, however when I go to conventions I would love to wear the cosplay there too! We go by what the Quran, the Sunnah and the sahaba did. Not a single woman from among the sahaaba did not covering up at least their hair. So yes it is a must. I won't get into the issue of face veil, but at the minimum, covering your hair and body wearing loose fitting clothing etc is an obigation on all women and there isn't any scholar in Islamic history that ever disputed this. Its only recent times this has become an issue because of westerners and feminists.

Please see Numan Ali Khan's explanation on this topic. Khimar and Khamr has the same roots. Khamr is that which messes with your head like alcohol. Khimar is a cloth covering the head. So khimar and Khamr are are both about the head. The covering of senses and the covering of the "outer" head. The very first verse of the surah noor itself says that " this is a surah which we have sent down and we have made it mandatory and we have sent down clear commandments in it so that you may learn lessons."And if we leave aside all discussion for a while and only think logically as Islam is a logical and practical religion .Why to put hijab or wear a particular form of dress code.first thing what's the purpose. Answer is, so the women don't look attractive except for her husband or don't get into in trouble. Now question does women look beautiful with hair or without hair or bald ?If Any women don't have hair you need not to tell her anything she herself cover her head she knows that she doesn't look good.So main purpose is to cover hair including body because it's natural ,she look beautiful and Allah knows this best.Therefore everything is very clear if women is submitted to Allah .Question arise when people want do fulfil the demand of nasfs and try to validate it from the Quran or hadith.may Allah show straight path to all of us.

I'm surprised that he couldn't explain the word khimar. It comes from the word khamr which means intoxicants. Intoxicants affect the brain which is inside the head and hence that which covers the head is called khimar. During pre Islamic times women used to cover their heads but leave the veil open on either sides. If we look at pictures of Mary, mother of Jesus, she is wearing a veil too, but left open to the sides. The verse in the Quran is telling women to pull the sides to the front to cover the chest area. Throughout history, we find women have always had a headpiece as part of their outfit spanning all cultures. There are KZbin videos on this topic too.

According to Hadith in sunan abu dawud. In the prophet's time men and women used to make wudhu together from single vessel. Remember hands, arms, head and feet.

Sister, respectfully, Islam is not a religion centered around the western or feminist principle of “freedom of choice” or “my body my choice”. Rather Islam is a religion of submission to Allah. You should wear hijab because you believe in it and understand the reasoning behind it, not because you’re compelled. Mahmut Temurci he said he was in doubt of the matter of the meaning of the khimar. is it specifically a head covering or just a covering in general. he built his conclusion not based on that but based on the fact that there is no explicit mandate to cover the hair/keep the khimar (if it meant headcovering) on in the qur’an.

Why is 'Khumr' used in the verse referring to the covering for women? khumr (pl. Of khimar) is no ordinary covering, it is different to 'libas,' 'jilbab' or 'hijab.' It implies a covering for the head. That's why 'khamr' is used to refer to alcohol as an intoxicant in Arabic, as the Arabs believed 'khamr' clouds the mind/head. So khamr and khumr are clearly both linked to the head.

If it says to wear a head covering when she prays and she is supposed to pray 5 times a day… It’d make sense that she wears her hijab all day unless she decides to carry it in her bag and put it on 5 times. Human nature does not dictate she will follow through with that.

The Quran says nothing about a women covering there hair, Allah says zeena so we need to study the context of the verses and what a woman’s zeena is but either way I find a sister who does wear the hijab very atttractive but we can’t/shouldn’t ostracize a sister when they decide they don’t want to wear one because we have no proof that says they should.

From my understanding, and as I've learned it, khumur is the plural of khimar. The entire verse is addressing all believing women hence the plural. It was societal norm to cover the head but the women would throw the rest of the cloth behind their shoulders, revealing their chest and so when the khumur verse was revealed, women started to draw what they would normally throw behind their shoulders, over their "juyoob" which is plural of jayb ( if anyone knows what this word means/refers to please elaborate). Another thought i had was, of this wasn't really understood correctly, which I don't see why it wouldn't because the prophet was there too explain the meanings of these verses.. then why would a woman take off what she saw as a modest act ( i.e. covering the head) and then discontinue doing this and instead only cover her chest after this verse being revealed? Anyway just my two cents. Allahu Alam.

About the words “..except that which appears ordinarily thereof..”, then the scholars of Islam have explained that these words refer to the hands and face of a woman. This is supported by the hadith of the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) : “Aisha reported that Asmaa, the daughter of Abu Bakr, entered into the presence of the Messenger of Allaah wearing thin transparent clothing, So the Messenger of Allaah turned away from her saying : ‘O’ Asmaa, when a women reaches the age of menstruation, it is not allowed that any of her should be seen except this’ - and he pointed to his face and two hands.”[3] The Hijaab is therefore something which MUST cover the entire body of a woman, except her face and hands.[4]

Salam Alaykum to all the readers. First of all everything mentioned in the Holy Quran is to be followed as simple as that. Jews used to pick and chose from the Torah, what interested them they followed but what didn't they threw it away. The Hadith he mentioned is authentic because it doesn't contradict the Quran. Times change but laws of The Almighty Allah don't change. Both Sarah in Holy Quran are clear cut. If we interpret the Quran same as he applied it to mentioned Surat 24:31 and 33:59 The the whole system of the Quran falls. No one understood the Holy Quran and out beloved Prophet did, as first generations 1-2 and 3. If we try to neglect that then we are letting the rope loose and letting ourselves fall on the pit. Quran is specific. Whatever is there is to be followed. We are not forced to follow but it applies for those who let their hearts connect with The Creator and His Book. When the verses were reviled people followed, what makes us now change that? I would advice you to consider Surat 4:59 O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best of result. May Allah guide us all. Ameen

Even I am of the same opinion "Wa idribna Bi Khumurihinna (Pl of Khimar) Ala Juyobihinna" - Quran 24:31 refers to just clothing and not head scarf in particular.If Allah wanted women to cover their heads or hairs,Allah would have used the words Raas(Head) or Shaar(Hairs) in that ayat.But both of these words are not found in that verse.Moreover Chp 33:59 was addressed to Prophet to say to his Spouse, Daughters and Believing Women of his times to wear a Jalabeeb(Plural of Jilbab) which refers to an outer garment so that they are identified and not molested.The word Khimar and Khamr are in my knowledge derived from root words Kha,Mim and Raa which means to cover,hide or conceal.Thus Khimar is anything that covers our body and and Khamr is anything which covers our minds i.e takes away our senses.Therefore many translators translate Khamr mentioned in 5:90 of Quran as Intoxicants rather than wine.Traditionally societies used this word to mean grape wine or wine but that is not the only meaning of khamr.Similarly it is believed that people at that time referred to headscarves as Khimar but that does not restrict its meaning to headscarves alone.

If you're at least sincere in your thinking - if you ever think of course - and try to be loyal to the Quran, you'll see that the order focuses on "draw your khumur over your bosom". Now you would not be able to follow this order faithfully unless and until you put your khumur above your bosom so that you can draw the end of the khumur 'over' your bosom. It follows that putting on khumur first become necessary by implication because of this order in the Quran. Khumur cannot and will not be interpreted as just pieces of clothing. Why? As implied in the ayah 24:31, khumur must be put above the bosom and the head is the only part of the body above the bosom that can be put on. For example, we find in one of the hadiths that the Prophet PBUH used to simply touch his khumur that he put around his head without taking it off in the process of his making ablution (namely, it's valid without touching his hair directly). From this, we can understand that any pieces of clothes put on the head or has a specific function around the head, the Arabs will refer to it as Khimar or Khumur. Obviously, Dr. Shabir wasn't aware of this, that's why his thinking is confused with doubt about what it refers to. Also, notice that the word used is 'over' or على and 'over' is different from 'on', otherwise the Quran would use فوق instead. So the attempt to interpret it as a piece of cloth put 'on top of' your bosom is such a dishonest act.

I think women used to be molested (raped) back then a lot and they were told to cover themselves so they don't attract the attention of these men. A deranged man is less likely to molest a woman that is dressed modestly and doesn't show much of her body. I am not 100% sure on this, but I think that is what it means.

Great explanation! Just one Question, isn't it mentioned in the Qur'an they shall also dress in this way to be recognized? If a woman wouldn't cover her hair you couldn't definetly tell who's a muslima and who's not. Here comes the Hijab in to the game. Added to that Mary the Mother of Jesus weared one too, also the nuns. Which shows that "pure", "modest" and "religious" women are wearing a headcovering.
