While at the SEMA Show this year, we tested the JM3 Oil Filter Wrench at the JM3 booth. We posted the video on social media and the comments coming in were pretty skeptical. After a few weeks, we finally got a couple of our own that we can test in the shop. We'll see if it works as easy as it seemed to at the show. You can buy a single JM3 Oil Filter wrench for about $30, or you can buy a 5-pack for about $100.

Worst filter removal of all time was when I changed the oil filter on a rotary screw compressor. Shut it down and let it cool for 15 minutes and it took me and another guy wrenching on it with all we had to get it removed. We decided to not do the next compressor until the next morning to do it cold. Same model and the sucker broke loose by hand. You learn something every day

Changing the oil filters on a Sterling LT9500 with a Detroit S60, had to remove the coolant filter and bracket and a few other bits then hammer my largest screwdriver through it and put a 1m cheater pipe on it then push from under while my buddy pulled the pipe from outside the frame... It was on so tight that the spigot the filter fits to turned out a few threads and it had a little leak after. Fun.

Anyone who’s spent any time in a shop will know that squeezing two wrenches together in one hand can produce a ton of torque relatively easily compared to trying to pull/push on one wrench the traditional way. Seems to me like you could use one of these to tighten a filter in a really hard to reach spot as well as loosen. I wonder if they’ll come out with a ratcheting version of this tool or one that will work with cartridge style European filters. Awesome review Tim! I can’t wait to try this tool myself.

That does work, but the other half of this wrench only serves the purpose to push the wrench handle back away from your hand. The "squeeze" is not really a feature that actually uses grip strength It's just a giant funny looking box end wrench

Once I worked on a Yaris, client stated that his "friend" did the last oil change. I had to stab the filter with a flat screwdriver to create lever because my oil wrenches couldnt get a grip. It was really tight. Only managed to pull 2 quarts out, extremely thick, dark and smelled aweful. Im willingto bet that the "friend" stole his oil and never did the change.

I bought one of these and it didn't work for my application which was a Toyota oil filter. I believe that the problem was that the tool was too big for my oil filter even though I told them exactly the part number of the oil filter that I was using which is Toyota 90915-YZZN1. Now these filters are truly tiny but since I provided them with this information I would have expected them to send me an appropriately sized wrench. I use a cup style wrench made by Motive X which is a beautifully machined billet aluminum tool that fits the 90915-YZZN1 perfectly and does a great job. Incidentally Toyota provides a torque spec for their oil filter which is 17.5 N-m which I do use with my torque wrench to tighten my filters.

I think this would work fine for filters that are not stuck, that just got normal torque during installation and have not been on for extended periods. But for a filter that was cranked on, or hard stuck from extended time, I am not believing this thing is going to have any chance to remove them.

Okay I see the JM3 filter wrench works well on bench as gentleman did this test But try same test on car or truck after been on vehicle for 3,000 miles in weather conditions and or in tight spot like my '86 Olds 4 cyl were your limited on hand movement with the oil filter tool Not all vehicles are easy to get at the filters to remove them some are PITA. And Never over tighten Dam filters only go as hand ✋️ Tight . "NEVER USE WRENCH TOO TIGHTEN OIL FILTERS"

I will add to this , we are a little vague with our sizes. Why? Because we want to make a personal touch and make a personal conversation. We enjoy learning about what our tool is going to be used on. So we ask questions to make the experience a bit better. I hate computer generated questions.

That’s the whole reason for my tool it’s one tool. No need for. Ratchet or extension and possibly a swivel. And if you can touch the filter and squeeze not push or pull like every other filter wrench requires, just squeeze and my tool does the work. Have to see it to believe it.
@DiligentDave1966
@DiligentDave1966 Жыл бұрын
@@JM3OFW I don’t think you understood my point at all. A lot of newer cars, including Subaru, Chrysler, etc., have literally an access circle not much bigger than the filter. The filter is obviously above the circle so it doesn’t get damaged. You can’t even really get filter pliers in there to remove the filter. I already have the tools I need, so I have no need for your “amazing” filter tool.
