Decrease the pH to 5-6.5 with a small amount of vinegar and it won't bleach. PH >7 will produce hypochlorite,

You need to keep the pH at 5.0 preferably a little lower at the expense of minor Cl2 offgassing to make the HOCl solution last a lot lot longer. Adding vinegar to water asymptotically approaches pH 4 so you are best off adding a little too much vinegar and you will be somewhere in the 4.5 to 5.0 region comfortably. pH will drift upward over time which is what ruins the antimicrobial effect. HOCl is responsible for antimicrobial behavior not OCl-

It's nice to see devices like this. When I was in my late teens (1995), I used a 9-Volt battery with a cup of salt water. It was fun to smell the chlorine bleach scent in my room.

A useful follow up to this video would be getting some pH strips to show the start and finished product. Part of the reason bases like bleach and acids like beer or wine have the ability to kill stuff that lives in water is because it pushes the pH of the liquid around that makes it inhospitable to said microbes. Bleach is a strong base and has a pH of about 12 or 13. Water(and people) have a pH of about 7. Stomach acid tends to be about 1.5 to 3. Litmus test strips are cheap and will give you a good baseline of effectiveness.

Thank you for making the video I have seen a product that does this its a bottle with built in trigger spray. apparently it does not beach clothes. maybe the manufactures have set device to switch off at a selected time or its weaker solution. I wonder if it's possible to make the solution so it won't bleach clothes. This must be possible as you can buy color safe bleach that won't not beach clothes.

You can make hypochlorous acid from regular bleach by adding a few drops to vinegar acidified water. This is mildly dangerous due to Cl2 off gassing and its easy to kill yourself if you use too much bleach. This process mostly produces hydrogen gas and doesn't require starting from bleach. You can ferment your own vinegar at home if necessary too.

Hard question. Easily answered with a little research though. I read an old field sanitation manual in 2005 on the subject. Short answer is yes and a little to a lot. However, it's dependent on your ppm of sodium hypochlorite generated based on salt solution strength and time of electrolysis. So if you're at a 0.05% solution or 5,000 ppm (which is the low end of cleaning strength) you'll only need 10 drops to clean a quart of clarified water to be safe. In case you're not to savvy on math, that's 40 drops to a gallon. 20 drops is a ml. Don't forget to let it stand for 30 minutes before drinking. Double it if you want. Hell, triple it. It won't kill you. Might irritate your esophagus and stomach. Give you the scoots and you might loose your voice. But, you can just throw a gram of ascorbic acid in to neutralize it and improve the taste. That's a 1000 mg of Vitamin C if you're not aware. Oh hey... by the way, read a book. You won't be doing something stupid like asking questions in a KZbin comment section when you're already on the internet and could figure it out with just a little research on your own.
