Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) is famous for claims that it is a good poison ivy remedy. In this video I go into some identification of the plant. I also give my feedback based on the couple of recent scientific studies that have attempted to determine weather jewelweed actually is useful when used to treat poison ivy rash.
Study 1 - (lawsone study) - www.sciencedir...
Study 2 (saponin study) - www.sciencedir...
After reviewing these studies they seem to show that jewelweed is somewhat helpful when used to remove the urushiol(poison ivy oil). Jewelweed seems to contain chemicals called saponins that are soap-like. The studies resulted in regular dish soap working best to remove the oil but the saponins in the jewelweed also seemed to work.

I had always heard of jewelweed for stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) which often grow close to each other. It always seemed to work well for me and for other people stung.

Thanks for the personal experience. It seems to work for most people I've talked to but still no good scientific studies.

Thanks for the info. I have to get around to making a witchhazel video sometime, I'll plan to look up that info and put it in.

My husband can cure poison Ivy, cow itch or any plant itch and doesn't need witch Hazel, or gauze, it takes one treatment and your cured in 24hrs or less. I didn't believe it until I saw it done.

I'm always looking for new things to teach my grandkids about the plants we see growing all around us. Did you know that daylilies are not just edible but sweet and delicious?

Since they are part of my flower garden, our consumption has been grazing blooms or added to salads for color.

Does that mean Bouncing Bet might have the same effectiveness?

I would assume so. Although there are different types of saponins, i don't know if the ones in jewelweed are better for this application. Also i think there is some novelty in saying " look! the remedy for poison ivy grows right next to the poison ivy".
