How to Identify Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans)

Thanks. I've worked solely outdoors for the past ten years and I've become pretty sharp with identifying poison ivy, but I've run into several questionable plants and this helps me know more identifying properties.

One other helpful identifier is that the leaflet at the top sticks out farther from the stem than the two below it.

I've always identified it as 3 leaves, and the two outside leaves look like mittens with the thumbs facing outwards. I didn't know the leaves could have different shapes.

There is a long bike path connected to several cities, including Arlington and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Always hard stop seeing leaves of three. So many plant apps that can help it you're unsure. I went to weed One of my garden beds and had to put it off because it is everywhere. 😅

Can Poison Ivy kill the trees it climbs? I been having to go in the woods behind my house to try to control japanese knotweed making its way forward. I have to walk through so much poison ivy to get to the JK. Im worried about a cherry tree its climbing. And Black Oak being shrouded wirh grape vines. Theres a hollow where the patch of poison ivy hovers off the ground, almost to my knees.

Yeah it can if it blocks enough sunlight or adds too much weight to the tree top. Generally not a problem because they're less aggressive than English Ivy

Luckily my bf and I are very resistant to ppison ivy.
