Does Jhon Duran deserve more game time than he's getting for Aston Villa? 🤔

No. He’s young, he’s getting plenty of minutes, but he is not as good all round as Watkins is. We absolutely need Watkins for his positional play, passing, and discipline in the more difficult matches. Just look at last season. Watkins had the most assists in the league. Duran does not assist at all. Yes, he’s learning, but currently his game is very one-dimensional. It’s great - it’s what makes him a super sub! He’s got the chaotic unpredictability and raw talent that makes him a brilliant weapon off the bench. But he’s not yet ready to be the main striker, and in the meantime Ollie Watkins does his job perfectly and has done nothing to deserve getting dropped. Duran actually gets a LOT of benefit from this arrangement because there’s basically no pressure on him, Ollie shoulders all the responsibility. What we have is the best of both worlds - two very different strikers, allowing us to have versatile and unpredictable tactics, each getting plenty of minutes and scoring plenty of goals while simultaneously being properly rested and hopefully avoiding injury.

Exactly. Watkins got the most assists in the league last year as well as scoring loads of goals. He’s a complete striker in his prime and even when he’s not scoring, he’s got a massive impact. Duran is still very young and very raw, he’s still learning, and he’s also a completely different profile of striker to Watkins. They both suit different opponents and game states and it is incredibly handy to be able to rotate between the two and add that extra versatility and unpredictability.

Pretty sure we played more matches than anyone else last season, or at the very least we were near the top. The narrative is so funny and contradictory. “Villa can’t handle the schedule, their players can’t handle the minutes” -> Villa strengthens squad depth and rotates heavily and proactively. “Villa has too much depth, their players aren’t getting enough minutes” -> it’s almost like that’s the whole point😂

The question is why does sky sports care? This isn’t even an issue Unai knows Duran plays better fighting for his spot hence all the goals off the bench if he gives him full 90 mins he may drop off or get injured. Ollie is still banging in the goals Villa can play them both, don’t fix what isn’t broken! Of course sky and the rest of the media hope Duran goes off the rails or under performs so they can get rid of Villa messing up their “top 6” viewing tally. He’s a young hungry player who who has signed a new contract till 2030….. 2030 he’s going nowhere he will get his time. @@juanjuan4119 he’s just renewed his contract and is happier than ever at the club, we don’t hold grudges here, it’s all good and he’s getting lots of time and improving under one of the best coaches in the world. When the time comes we can sell him for 100m but until then let’s not create problems😂 Duran is getting some starts now too, he started against Bologna, it’s all being handled well.

No he shouldn’t have, Haaland also gets annoyed when he’s subbed off but it’s always for a reason. You’ve gotta manage the minutes and avoid injury. He’s still young and he had plenty of time on the pitch, plus he was carrying a yellow card which could lead to suspensions down the line, best to bring in Watkins who is more reliable and disciplined and can see out the game safely. As you said, Unai knows what he’s doing! Genius man

Watkins offers much more than just goals to the team, unless Emery comes up with a system where they both start together he's not going to drop one over the other unless it's for rotation. Duran will get his starts but he's not pushing Ollie out unless he's not performing.

Keeping the line up the way it's set up now benefits the team. Most English fans are going to favor their beloved Watkins over Colombian Duran. The only one who does not benefit is Duran. Playing an average of 25 min/game does not do any good for his morale and player rating. If he's smart, he needs to stay focus and improve as a player. He signed a new contract, but top teams will go after him. Mucha suerte Duran!
