Kinesiology Tape (AKA KT Tape, RockTape, Kinesio Tape) is used a lot by athletes. We hear claims of pain reduction and reduced inflammation. But does kinesiology tape work and if so, how?

Online Guide for KT Tape Applications: www.kttape.com/
As a sports chiropractor who works with a lot of athletes I often get these questions. In this video I go over how kinesiology tape works, when it is a good option for pain relief, and the mechanisms and science behind how it helps. We also go over how to apply K-tape properly and how to take kinesiology tape off without pain.
I give a demonstration of how to self apply kinesiology tape for tennis elbow.

Agreed, I went from "we just don't know, but buy my brand below" to "you'll get this relief, that relief, but they never address the elephant in the room...HOW??? Then I find this video and get..."your skin has layers, the layers prevent the travel of fluid, k tape promotes that fluid flow". I can directly relate that info to my experience of getting relief when the tape wrinkles up with my skin. Very clear explanation, I'm happy I found a k tape nerd over a k tape salesman. This is exactly why the community needs the dislike count visible. Two literal crap options, then the actual answer. We shouldn't have to waste our time with a salesman using the "I got info" click bait tactic and never even providing info. So thank you for your video and not BSing around. You rock!

Research studies have stated that there is no significant difference using or not. Thus your placebo effect might be significant. I've seen the tape work first hand! I had a severe bone contusion with a lot of bruising due to repetitive impact from my sport. My trainer cut two pieces into small strips and basically spider-webbed it over the bruise. After a week, the bruising had lifted significantly on my shin where the strips were! (The bruise had a spiderweb design in it which looked kind of cool, not going to lie 😅) I am amazed how KT tape does what it does, but it works!

I was taught in something called “paper off tension.” The tape comes pre-stretched about 25% or so on the paper backing. So applying the tape with “paper off tension” should give you that 25% stretch. I’m excited to hear if you notice a difference. Thanks for your comment.

I find it interesting that you say not to apply any stretch to the tape at all, when KT Tape has released many videos that say to use varying ratios of stretch on application. I have seen a variety of videos where everyone referrences some form or method of stretching the tape during application. Is there any specific reason? I ask because every once in a while i get some skin irritation and i wonder if thats because of the stretching. Im also wondering if maybe stretching the tape could cause some form of overcompensation or something? That said i really liked your thorough explanations and the lasagna metaphor for the skin layers. Thank you!

I'm in favor of using KT tape. However, one issue I have when discussing the awesomeness of this product outside the allopathic community is the lack of scientific literature. Has there been recent studies to demonstrate a positive correlation?
@PositiveMotionChiro
@PositiveMotionChiro 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse, I wish there were more rigorous studies to show the benefits of kinesio tape. In my private practice I follow the three tenets of evidenced based care: 1. Use of best available scientific studies. 2. Clinical experience and expertise 3. Patient preference KT tape is inexpensive, easy to apply, doesn't have any horrible side effects (skin irritation being most common side effect), and can even look cool. I use it and check in with the patient to see if they are noticing that it is helping them. I don't find that it helps everyone, but some patients really feel a benefit. It could be placebo, but if I can make a patient feel better, have less pain, with minimal side effects, I feel that is me practicing following the majority of the evidence-based care tenets. Hopefully, robust scientific studies will be forthcoming to help us understand what conditions KT tape helps with the most, how best to apply it, and when KT tape application is not going to be of benefit. Thanks for your comment and question.
@salebetheria9135
@salebetheria9135 3 жыл бұрын
Currently, to my knowledge, there is no scientific literature about KT tape that would prove any effect beyond placebo. This doesn't seem to be because there are no studies, it seems to be because KT tape does not achieve what is promised or does/cannot work the way people expect it to work. Taping something on the top of your skin is unlikely to affect anything under it (unless temperature or chemical agents are involved). KT tape, seems to be in sports what is homeopathy for medicine.

What do you think of people with hyper mobility using it?
@PositiveMotionChiro
@PositiveMotionChiro 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! Kinesiotape (KT Tape) is not going to rigidly hold joints in place like an athletic tape would. But it does confer proprioceptive (nervous system) input which can help your body to move and behave differently. It would be something that a person with hypermobility could try and see if it made them feel like they have more stability. That is the great thing about KT tape - it is relatively inexpensive, easy to apply and then see how it makes the person feel. It is doesn't help or bothers them they can pull it right off.

@PositiveMotionChiro 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheron, That is a great question. I don’t find that kinesiology tape works well as an SI belt or support. The weave of the tape allows for too much stretch and an SI belt is meant to stabilize a joint. So I wouldn’t recommend it for that usage. Take care!

I have had chronic mid-point achilles inflammation & pain for 20 years (maybe over use, maybe reaction to antibiotic, we aren’t sure). It was both Achilles but now just one. I do eccentric stretches/loading. Would tape help relieve acute pain when hiking/walking? (Starting an intense 4 week course of weekly shockwave in a couple weeks, fingers crossed).

Would this work for getting leg cramps or stop getting cramps I should say ? After I’ve had a ruff day of physical work I get leg cramps at night so bad I’m afraid to lay down and go to sleep
@PositiveMotionChiro
@PositiveMotionChiro 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, That is a great question. It can sometimes helps athletes with having less cramps, but I don’t know if it would work for night cramps. You should check with your doctor about your leg cramps at night as they sound quite severe and sometimes spontaneous cramping of muscles can be a sign of something more serious going on in the body. Your doc should be able to help you determine the cause of your leg cramps. Some things that I look at in that regard with patients is first ruling out serious causes like electrolyte imbalances in the blood (with labs test if indicated), functionally low levels of magnesium (magnesium acts like a relaxation / turn-off switch for muscles), overpronation where your calf muscles are overworking all day because the arches of your feet aren’t being properly supported. I recommend getting in to see your doctor and looking further into what could be causing your specific cramping. Take care!

Hi namita pant, If it is not irritating the skin or falling off it can last for 2-3 days. If it starts to irritate the skin in any way or itch then I direct my patients to remove it immediately. Great question!

Hi Savelina, When I am traveling and need to find a good chiropractor I usually go to this website where chiropractors who specialize in sports chiropractic are listed: acbsp.com They have done additional training beyond their chiropractic school, usually utilize things like kinesiology tape in treatment of their patients, and work to get patients fixed up quick (vs. asking them to come back 3x/wk for months on end). I hope you find a great doc! Take care.

Kinesiology Tape are only good for supporting and resting your injury but not for playing sports as you need right strapping tape to support your new or old injury.
@PositiveMotionChiro
@PositiveMotionChiro 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, You are correct that Kinesiology or Rock tape is not great for supporting a new injury like a non-stretch athlete tape does. But it can really help out with subacute and more chronic injuries by helping the proprioceptive feedback in the body. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Cindy, Yes, kinesiotape (K-tape) can be easily applied to the lower back and help with lower back pain in many cases. The best part is that it is easy to apply and doesn’t cost much to give a try.

1 lymph - pulls the layers apart so that lymph moves more? come on! the thing that moves lymph around is muscle contraction. the tape will do almost nothing compared to the work you're doing with muscular activity 2 the pain thing - maybe a bit - the pain receptors being overriden by the pressure sensors 3 you'd have to put it on so tight that it pulled the skin. impossibly uncomfortable but you keep shilling your tape, Doc

Unfortunately, I can’t offer individualized treatment recommendations through KZbin comments so make sure to check with your doctor for your specific case. However, I recommend it to my patients for use during sleep when they have significant pain while sleeping or when first getting up in the morning and for those people it can really make a big difference.

Evidence really does not show any benefit apart from vaguely placebo. Any studies on this are so highly biased it laughable. Wrapped in complexity of technical jargon that means nothing substantial.. a real case of making the evidence say what you want it too..!good funny video mind 😂. I had a box of KT that I threw in my drawer and left in the box. Like for a year untouched. 🫣 Recently I thought about it. Due to my neck pain and spine pain. I decided to give it a try and I'm no longer whining in pain. It has helped greatly. It seems to help balance my neck and ease the pain along my spine. I do have the pre-cut tape. I'm able to cut different sizes, which I like. I recently decided to buy a cheaper brand. But immediately ran back to the original KT tape. The generic one just didn't do it for me. Also, it hurt like hell 😢 removing the generic tape. Now I've asked myself if this is all just in my head. Is this tape working? Well, it's made a difference in my pain level, especially along my spine. I have scoliosis, not severe. But still painful. As I've gotten older it's gotten worse. So I'm going to say yes, the tape works and I even sleep better now. 😊
