But that is the thing! Phos made it that way! Phos could've been happy way back then, but because they were so concerned with being useful like the others to be loved like the others, they didn't stop to realize that they were already loved in the way they were

@Zyke_Geronimo13 күн бұрын
@@bbittercoffeewasn’t the entire reason why phos wanted to be useful to others was because of the fact that quite literally everyone minus Sensei treated Phos horribly as a result of being born fragile? It took Sensei 300 years before he could find a use for Phos. Phos wasn’t really “loved” either, the other gems constantly berate her for something she was born with hence the inferiority complex and drive for change.

I think that the lack of cohesion throughout the epilogue is an entirely intentional creative decision. Its hard to genuinely talk about the end of LOTL in terms of happy or sad really, because to me Its about acceptance. Our place in the universe was never guarunteed, and it will not last forever. And some will live their entire lives without finding thier true purpose. Life is confusing, and harsh, full of missed opportunities, yet it can be beautiful. But everything will one day dissappear. At least it happens at all, just like the story. What it means to me at least. I love 2 yap

I loved the epilogue so much. It wasn’t perfect, mostly cuz of how abstract and fricken existential a lot of it is. But I think that adds to the finale. Phos’ final form of existence is kinda the opposite of perfection, they can’t even move and must rely on being moved by the other siblings. But they all love each other, they wouldn’t ask anything more of each other. Perfection, power, ability, none of that matters, simply being there is what’s important. And that is incredible :)

People forget that a lot of Manga artists love to end their Mangas with a huge philosophical yap about what they think the meaning of life, the universe and everything is. Predictably, reception can vary, because you yourself can have radically different opinions.
@RegalOni3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if I'll ever read the final chapter as the microcosm containing a new iteration of the universe. Maybe this is the intention, but I read that as the last memory that remains in the very last remnant of Phos. Every other part of Phos becoming nothingness with everyone else, but what does remain is a gentle, happy reminder of something that made them happy, and the idea that they, too, made and continue to make others happy in one way or another. The themes of Buddhism and nirvana make me doubt that the cycle repeats in some way. It is the ultimate goal to end that cycle of rebirth, so i just have to assume that is the case. Of course, I feel like the ending was left just vague enough for the reader to project their own interpretation. Regardless, I am sad to see Phos go, but I am glad we got to see their story

Houseki no Kuni is my absolute favorite manga of all time, and I loved the ending. I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest and felt it was a solid conclusion for Phos as a character. When I first saw the full spread of the original Phos looking out at the stars with the phrase, “I hope they can brighten up someone’s day,” it was clear to me that it was trying to mirror the first few panels in Chapter 1. For me this meant that from the very beginning, Phos was already at her endpoint but she just hadn’t realized it. and It was clear that she was never going to realize it because she existed in an environment where only the strongest gems could survive. There was no space for a more fragile gem who couldn’t fight. In her journey to achieve the impossible, Phos had to lose parts of who she was intrinsically and completely reshape herself, her personality, and her physical form to fit the norm. I also love how, as Phos grows progressively stronger and more influential, she begins to lose everything little by little, eventually leading to being taken advantage of by the Lunarians and ending in having to make everyone disappear into nothingness, becoming trully alone... However, in the end, she finds salvation through the new rock life form and Pitapat, finally entering an environment where fragility no longer matters. in the new world, even if she breaks, it isn’t a problem. It’s incredibly cathartic to see that, even in the end, she’s still wishing to make everyone smile, just as she had wanted to make all the gems happy from the very beginning... Okay, you got me, it was absolute cinema ✋🥺🤚....

I love how getting a full picture of the story from start to finish and just time to digest everything that was Phos gives so much insight on the way that Ichikawa goes about linking various ideas together. She doesn’t really paint anyone as good or bad all throughout. One such example is how the last chapter lets Phos shatter and spread across the entire universe and it is seem with such joy while something like Yama spreading the ground up pieces of the lustrous into the moon as “evil” because of the point of view that we see things from (Phos truly letting go vs Phos searching for their lost kinships). I guess thinking of the last volume of material as an epilogue - post humanity - is a great way to interpret the series as long as it’s not seen as an epilogue to the story. But even that is somewhat off because as you mention we contemplate on humanity and happiness all throughout until the very last panel itself. I just hope this doesn’t reiterate the running narrative some individuals had to thinking the story had “ended” everytime Ichikawa went on hiatus and the rest of the story is optional as an epilogue. It would do a disservice with how calculated everything came out in the end (with the real time event of a phos colored comet in our visible eye as the last chapter released). Great video! I am one of the few who never saw the previous one 😅 let me rectify that and watch it soon.

No piece of Phos falls "into" the flower. Look closely, a big chunk splits and "wiggles" into the grass, then Ichikawa focuses on a small corner that drops unto another rock and dissintegrates, with just a tiny confused piece wondering "!?" as it flies off unto the ground and gets lost to view completely. Ichikawa gives us motion and sound so that we clearly see how our little idiot has broken up again. This is BAD, and Phos knows it. Probably up until this point, on this planet, she has been intact. But now... In the silence, the pebble comforts her with a little beautiful lie about her pieces traveling into other galaxies and turning into comets, most probably an important buddhist theme. But that's not her fate, is it? Even in paradise, she's fracturing, she's dying. And, as the tiniest piece remaining, in the face of complete oblivion, she still comforts herself trying to make others happy. Isn't that true for all of us? Isn't that the best humanity has to offer (maybe a few other species as well)? But you know... enough seriousness. Until the very end, "for now, let's play". I guess the final translation will make things more clear. I honestly think that the flower poem might hint that we, the readers, might be the "other universes". I swear, on my personal lonely sky, Ichikawa lit up a frekkin quasar.

Oh yeah, by the way, someone is making a game based on Land of the Lustrous

sweet dreams dear gem, may your light reach everyone, shining brightly all the while I like the small theory about the reason of so much wait for the ending to be released, the comet pons-brooks, described as "The Pons-Brooks comet, which has a beautiful mint color similar to Phosphophyllite" is a comet that is visible from earth every 70 years, and the manga just ended around the same time this comet started its cycle near earth, It's fun to think that Ichikawa made us wait that long just to end it around the same date, and in my opinion, very meaningful to the last 2 pages of the manga as well. the phos comet will be forever in my memories, and some of us will try to see it again in 70 years :) I couldn't watch this video at work calmly without tearing up a little, this ending still hits as hard as a rock in the head, great video and narration :)

Before I go on about my opinions of the epilogue and ending, I'd like to thank you. You're the reason I began reading Land of the Lustrous. Without your video on Phos, I likely wouldn't have found it during a part of my life where I needed its message the most. Now on to the review. I personally think the ending is perfect. To me, it's exactly what I wanted but not entirely what I expected. The theme of acceptance that outlines the epilogue perfectly captures how I believe Phos' character arc should have ended. It's a weird ending, but one that I never once felt overstayed it's welcome. It forces you to accept, like Phos has to. You have to accept that the rocks just exist, that the flowers hold entire worlds. It's amazing - in my opinion - how the writer managed to do that. The final image makes me think the entire point of the manga was to give a message to others. I see the comet as an abstract idea of kindness. Phos, after accepting themselves and becoming happy spread that to others who need it. The young Phos needed that happiness, and so old Phos sends it by accident. It's a grand and tough to grasp idea that I love. Land of the Lustrous resonates so well with me because I've struggled with self image and esteem which the series outright centers around. If I'd summarise the message that I took from it, it would be "accept yourself, accept others". That's a difficult task, but one Land of the Lustrous introduced me to. Once again, thank you for both reading and introducing me to this amazing series.

It was a good ending for Phos. We don't see a lot of stories that end in relationships parting, so it's refreshing. I just wish we got more stories with the side characters - they also helped make the story unforgettable. Cinnabar, Cairngorm, even Sensei, Jade, and Euclase. I felt for them a lot, but their endings didn't feel as conclusive or happy as Phos's. Feels like they'll keep making mistakes. The two diamonds had the closest thing to a definitive finale, although they could've used at least one more conversation to round out their story.

i think the universes in the flowers aren't meant to be literal? i mean i guess it could be literal since that flower is the home of billions of micro organisms invisible to the human eye. and those tiny life forms don't know any other worlds beyond the flower they inhabit. their world functions in a different way than where the pebbles live. even the different sections of the same flower have different functions, creating multiple worlds for whatever lives in them. the meaning behind phos' shards entering multiple universes means that their tiny fragments are joining the lives of the micro organisms. for example, an ant and a human live drastically different lives due to their size differences. a human's bedroom could be an entire solar system to an ant. if we were to shrink down to the size of an ant, living in our bedroom would be a new experience. outside in nature, so many things are living in their own galaxies. even a leaf on a tree is it's own planet homing hundreds of life forms.

I know that the entire manga is supposed to be Buddhist ideology, and thats why the ending was what it was. But I had expected that the Lunarians would've rebuilt the original phos with all the pieces of phos that they had. Then, there would've been two phos's. The monster they had become.. And the Original. When they came face to face, and the original ran in fear... phos would've had to face the reality that they became a monster due to the choices they made; and could never go back. That would've been an AMAZING plot twist... So to me; the ending was disappointing. Did it live up to its religious buddist ideology? Yes. But I really think that cost the manga a better plot. The manga could've easily taken the 'Innocence lost' plot point instead. It could've pointed out that Phos decisions were their own choice, and that the monster they became was their own fault. But instead; we got all kinds of philosophy on lunarians, and other characters became unlikable. In the end, they are dissolved into nothingness and Phos is reduced to a small broken rock floating in space. I have to say... I didn't like it. I feel like my interest in the plot went downhill after Phos was shattered and buried. :/

The manga has a bit of a Buddhist arc to it, as much as I understand about Buddhism. The Christian arc, which is what I agree with, is discovering love, and loving others, even if it means sacrifice. There were slight parallels, but overall it was ultimately a tease, and everyone not only died, but had their souls destroyed (~Achieving Nirvana AFAIK). And the resolutions of the arcs of each other gem happened off-screen. The hope of Christianity is an eternity of paradise, because infinity is the number of ways you can express love. The hope of Buddhism AFAIK is becoming nothing because and endless existence would just bore you (or turn you evil). I'm not angry at the ending. It just doesn't align with my values.

There were lots of cool ideas and concepts used, lots of interesting characters introduced, lots of potential. But I feel like it never reaches the heights that it should have. The story takes sudden and jarring shifts. I think the epilogue is great, in a vacuum. But its an unsatisfying epilogue when contrasted with the rest of the story. I think its largely due to cultural differences between the east and west, philosophically.
