38 years old had surgery last year after I noticed a small bump and some hot sensation (pain) near my groin on the right side. Had a slight inguinal hernia. Doctor told me its more common on the right side of males from what he's seen. Decided to go with surgery, although he was open to allowing me to wait and watch. But i was already experiencing some discomfort after lifting so i decided to go with surgery. I had robotic laparoscopic surgery on my inguinal hernia and he put a mesh in place. Mesh should help prevent any future hernias in this area which i took as a good thing. Only thing i didn't like is that he didn't give me an option for surgery type. Robotic required (in my case anyway) three incisions in my stomach area level with my belly button. One in my belly button and one on each side. This has left small scars. I don't care about them, but some people may. If you do laparoscopic they can do the incisions below the belt line (in some cases). After surgery i spent 5-7 days recovering. I started going on longer walks and then a slow jog. Back in the gym after about 7 days doing very very light weights of machines only. Worked slow up to eventually deadlifting and squatting the bar after about 2 weeks. By 4 weeks was deadlifting and squatting some light weight. From there it was just working up to higher weights. Took maybe 10 weeks or so before i was back near my old weights. Didn't lose much strength overall. Other than some periodic very slight discomfort from some scar tissue I've had no issues almost 1 year later.

@@ronweaver4311 On the other hand, they can do some really cool shit with it. My dad was able to get surgery for a congenital heart defect without having his whole chest cracked open; just a couple holes on his side. The scope, danger, and recovery (and the costs associated with all the above) kept him from getting the non-robotic surgery done before, even though he'd already suffered a couple strokes because of the defect. It all depends on the procedure, really. For some procedures, the steadiness really helps, and the surgery can be less invasive than traditional methods.

*Tips and information for recovering from Hernia Surgery if you live alone.* These are things you should do before you leave the house to go for surgery. This includes but is not limited to: Cook and prepare a week’s worth of meals and snacks before surgery. Meals that will be easy to pass through your digestive system. Things like vegetable soup with beans, carrots, celery…, oatmeal with prunes, egg salad, chicken salad, steamed carrots, broccoli, asparagus… low fat and low grease type foods. Snacks like apples, oranges, *ripe* bananas, all kinds of fruits and berries are good to keep things moving. Start taking a stool softener one or two days before surgery and then continue taking it when you get back home. Wear loose fitting clothes to the hospital and continue to do so when you get back home. Example: I took a shower that morning with an antibacterial soap, I wore clean socks, slippers, sweatpants with no underpants, a T-Shirt, and no jewelry of any kind. In a ziplock bag place your keys, ID card, a credit card, medical insurance cards, and give it to your driver to hold. Do not take your phone to surgery. Leave your phone at home, on your nightstand, and fully charged. Place something next to your toilet you can grab onto to help you get on and off the toilet. Do the same for your bed and other areas you may sit. Have toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss out and ready to use. A glass to use for water to rinse out your mouth. You’re not going to be able to bend over to _cup water_ into your hands. If you don’t already have a _grabber,_ get one. Place a thermometer on your nightstand and make sure it is in working order. Have on hand at least two ice packs that you can wrap a clean cloth around to put over the location of surgery and rotate them from the freezer as needed. This will keep the swelling down. Read your after surgery instructions and follow them. Listen to your doctor and follow his/her orders. Keep the wound area clean and GENTALY clean it with an antibacterial soap every morning and again before you go to bed at night. Have clean sheets on your bed. The next day get up and walk but be careful. I walked outside twice around the cul-de-sac four times a day starting the day right after surgery. Twice in the morning, once in the afternoon, and then again in the evening. Have plenty of water and Gatorade on hand, and before you leave for surgery place a few bottles on your nightstand, computer desk, kitchen table, kitchen counters, your television chair, and in your refrigerator. Drink plenty of liquids. At least four bottles per day. Take pain medication as needed but don’t overdo it. All pain medications can cause constipation and trust me, you don’t want that. A list of movies you may want to watch. I am not going to sugarcoat this for you. It’s going to be hard. The first three days are not going to be pretty, they are hard and tough, so be ready. It gets easier on your fourth day. Good luck and I hope this helps.

I had to watch this because I work in a supermarket, and most shifts I fill trays of produce, some of them trays of potatoes weighing at least 25kg. I'm a physically fit person, I don't struggle or strain to lift these and I always use the correct lifting technique, we have equipment such as anything with wheels that carry those trays, to make the job easier while avoiding repetitive stress. Before working in that department, I've trained with home gym equipment such as heavy dumbells (total 55kg) that are adjustable, when full they weigh more than the trays I've mentioned, I always warm up and stretch before starting a workout and of course eat a meal before I begin. I don't have a bodybuilder look, my build is deceptively average looking when fully clothed. I've never been to the doctor for any physical issues as a result of lifting, nor have I ever suffered a hernia, I'm 33 years of age. This is where it gets super annoying, and I'll explain why. People on serval occasions have said "You'll get hernia", "Wait till you get to 40, and you'll start getting hernias". One colleague had one, but he is not my size, he's much older than I am, and he's not an experienced lifter. These people don't lift! And they certainly don't lift what I lift, and I'm also smart about lifting with experience. I only lift what I can handle, and I avoid lifting for the sake of it where it can be avoided.

For those in need of a hernia repair, I would caution against mesh. I had two hernias last year. The first was repaired with mesh. I had chronic sever pain for 6 months and finally had the mesh removed, which relied most of my pain, but still left me with some. Because of the horrible experience with mesh, I decided to have my other hernia repaired without mesh. The second hernia repair resulted in no chronic issues (though, it was more painful immediately after the operation than the mesh repair). The bottom line is, mesh gives pain to a significant portion of the population and your doctor has no clue ahead of time if you will be in the group that suffer. As recurrence rates for mesh and non-mesh repairs are similar, the low-risk option is to go for a non-mesh repair.

@mattlorig
@mattlorig 4 жыл бұрын
@@alphamale3141 Well, I am not a surgeon, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I believe a non-mesh hernia repair involves stitching muscle together. I don't think it is quite as simple, though, as just closing a hole. The abdomen has various layers of muscle and, in order to make sure that the repair lasts, I believe some amount of cutting a moving around of "good tissue" is needed. There are various "named" repairs and each of them are different: Shouldice, Bassini, Desarda, McVay, etc.. I think my repair was some combination of Bassini and Desard.

@@OfficialGundem Both hernias were inguinal; I don't know if they were direct or indirect and I have no clue how I got them. Just trust me: do NOT get mesh. There is a significant probability the mesh will give you chronic unrelenting pain. Find a doctor that knows how to do a Shouldice or Bassini repair (i.e., a tissue repair). You'll be back to normal in one month. That's how long the recovery took me for the hernia I had repaired without mesh. I'm still suffering 18 months later from the side where I had mesh put in an subsequently removed.

Something interesting about the symptoms. Had inguinal hernia on the right side before 12 years or so. I didn't get any kind of pain but had the bump. The interesting part was that I had huge problems with urination and defecation. It was simply impossible to go in toilet and do something. I couldn't sleep well because of the non-stop calls to go and piss but I couldn't! I was able to spill few drops only and that's it. This went for weeks and believe me this can drive you crazy really fast! After the surgery everything came back to normal. Several doctors were really surprised how this has something to do with inguinal hernia but there it is.

Glad to see a new upload here! I was doing barbell hip extensions a few weeks ago and found a large lump later that day. After feeling it out for a bit, I was relieved to find it was something like a bursitis or an odd shaped contusion and not a hernia (it moved above the muscle, didn't regress when pressed, and I could almost feel underneath it). It was only mildly discolored at the time. My suspicions were confirmed a few days later, since it didn't get worse, the lump started to shrink, and a giant, colorful bruise came to the surface. Lesson learned: use a pad when doing hip extensions.

If you have a hernia, do some research before getting a mesh operation. The risk of developing long term chronic pain is fairly high. There are alternative non-mesh procedures, which are just as effective and reduce the risk of chronic pain to basically less than 1%. In Europe, Bio-Hernia is your best option.

I am 9 days into recovery after surgery. Had open mesh surgery on a right side inguinal hernia and simultaneous open no mesh on an umbilical. Surgeon told my wife all went well and it was a boring surgery. He decided not to mesh on the umbilical after evaluating it surgically. The umbilical I gave myself by being stupid 15 years ago. I was in the weight room and feeling stagnant on progress which was BS because I was in great shape, just not getting bigger. Anyway, one chest day I decided to do flat bench dumb bell chest presses instead of regular bench press. I picked up a couple 75 pound dumb bells and did some chest presses and had no issues but it was a little dicey putting them down because my shoulders are a little sketchy. So I did a set and put them down. Then I upgraded to 85 pound dumb bells -- dumb is the operative word as they were too heavy for me. I did the set of flat bench no problem but when I went to put them down, I felt I couldn't safely do it. I couldn't drop them or set them down without risking injury to myself or someone else. So I decided to sit up with them tucked in. When I did, I felt the pop in the center of my belly. For years I have been watch and wait with a new outtie belly button. As I put on weight four years ago I felt it bothering me especially when I put on wight around the holidays Then recently I somehow got a right side inguinal hernia I think doing chin ups (I could feel a little zipper like pain on my right side belt line as my front swung forward a little). Around this time I also tried to cross a wire fence straddling it and got my right leg stuck beyond my extensions ability which didnt feel good -- perhaps both events contributed. I am a pretty fit 59 year old male who works out daily. Now I am worried about getting back into it. Day 9 of recovery and the umbilical hurts when I sneeze, cough or my shirt touches it. The inguinal repair doesnt hurt too bad but it feels like I still have the hernia when I stand up or walk. Most of what I read on the internet is negative about recurrence and outcomes. I appreciate this video and many of the comments which are more balanced than what I have been seeing elsewhere.

Got the hernia for about 4 years now. That's my best guess. Was confirmed by a doc. Having weird feelings only when doing ab-wheel roll outs. Not using belt when lifting. I can hide it with some manipulations. It seems to getting bigger now. Have been considering an operation for forever now, but it's a bit pricey for atm. Will hope it won't pop before I go to treat it. Topic I'm interested in and I can't find a proper answer anywhere is how to train or live to be fair with varicose veins and not spidey tidey, but bulging ropes. I've had since teen years, got the removal operation, but it's creeping back and finding a doc that can help to live with it is tough.

I hope you see this comment because I think it’s important to the conversation. I’m an NP. My husband just found an umbilical hernia on himself (he’s overweight so it wasn’t visible). I’m SHOCKED by how little research there is on umbilical hernias. I’m questioning the “avoiding ab exercises” recommendations. They don’t seem to have a lot of evidence and it seems counterintuitive. It would seem to me that abdominal exercises would be beneficial **IF** the individual is reducing outward IAP by pulling their belly button toward their spine and avoiding Valsalva with each movement and during stabilization. Do you have any comments on this? I’ve scoured the internet and haven’t found any EBP thus far.

I'm kind of on the fence about this one because what you effectively said is that you aren't more at risk to develop inguinal hernias, which are far from the only type of hernia, as you yourself acknowledge at the start of the video. This is fine, but your title suggests you talk about hernias in general which you only briefly do at the start of the video. This is particularly interesting to me because back in 2018 I did overhead squats and probably moved in a wrong way I developed an epigastric hernia where a clump of fat tissue punctured my abdominal fascia above my belly button. The funny thing about this is that the hernia surgeons all thought it was because of sit-ups (which I never do because I think it's a bad exercise for core strength), when I asked why they said they get ~3 cases per week of people that need hernia surgery because they did sit-ups regularly. So it not only depends HEAVILY on the exercise(s) you execute, a bit of physiology (some people just have naturally weak or strong fascia) and of course it also depends on the type of hernia. So while your assessment in regards to inguinal hernias might be accurate this is far from the ultimate and conclusive answer to all hernia types like I think your title suggests, if such a thing is even possible.
@BarbellMedicine

Yea, no evidence that lifting or valsalva maneuvers increase risk of epigastric, umbilical, or femoral hernias either, as the model of " repeated stress" weakening the fascia has been debunked.

It has to either increase or decrease risk. It is more likely to increase, even if the amount isn't significant.

Great post! I had an incisional hernia and my doctor said I couldn’t lift more than 5lbs for a long time... It was about 6 months before I was cleared to actually lifting again. Worst six months ever 😂 I’m a personal trainer too and I felt like the laziest trainer in the world LOL!!

Have you ever seen the photos of that weightlifter who experienced a rectal blowout trying to lift a heavy weight? I think heavy lifters should fear severe rectal prolapses more than hernias.

Hey Jordan, you might consider not holding on the title cards for quite as long, or cutting them out entirely. It's a lot more engaging to be able to flow along at the speed of your thought, rather than be interrupted for 5 seconds just to stare at a 2 word question. Having you repeat the question in your own words in addition makes for 10-15 seconds of dead video. Always appreciate the content though, really informative!

How about a session on intermittent fasting and lifting? They both are very very good when done alone . More and more research keeps pouring in. But how about when we follow both of them together ? Can I lift while following a 16:8 IF schedule and yet not let go on any gainzzz! ?

Is there a difference between Visceral and Subcutaneous fat, one push outward and one push inward. So if you are skinny fat with much visceral fat, which push outward, you will have a higher risk of a hernia,, but if you have both fats it is countered out by subcutaneous fat?

Tbf, he said doing dumbbell rows with your knee on a bench will give you a hernia. But there's not much stress involved when lifting fake weights, so no idea what that knee position does to you.
@gamer-hg5hv

@@ssholum True that😂 a recent meta analysis showed that using fake weights increases all cause mortality and is an independent risk factor for being a pussy and not having "guts" which the authors theorized would explain the increased hernia risk
