This gardening in Canada video looks at how liquid aeration for lawns works. The question for many is “does liquid aeration really work”? only real way to determine if liquid aeration for soil actually reduces compaction is through the science. Liquid aeration works off of basic soil chemistry to help allow for better penetration of water and nutrients. Liquid aeration also will result in a healthy for one because of the added porosity and looser substrate. This means better route development and deeper penetration into me soil profile.

Ashley is an agronomist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up and coming gardeners.

For those with clay soil - plug aeration during rainy season to open it up will make a huge difference but after removing plugs out down organic material like Milorganite or compost, manure etc. This will start to change your soil overtime to be high quality soil

I just started using "liquid aeration" this summer. It is a "wetting agent", from what I've seen/read. I'm seeing if it will help with summer watering. I will be doing mechanical aeration in the fall. Liquid aeration in the summer to help watering be more efficient is the idea.

Ashley thank you for all your videos that enlighten us and dispelling so many myths. And most of all thank you for speaking in a language that most of us can understand. I would very much like to know your thoughts on the use of some of the Korean natural farming techniques such as IMOs and LAB. A practice no-till layering compost. I have a very large three-year-old woodchip pile that has produced beautiful hummus that I'll sift to get the smaller particles to mix with compost and use the bigger pieces for mulch. I grow lots of comfrey but I hate comfrey tea because it stinks so bad so I used it in my compost. What are you thoughts on comfrey? I try to stay as organic as possible and chemical-free. The only things I actually buy are blood meal and bone meal. Anytime I dig to plant something new my soil is full of worms and that's my only soil test. I guess what I'm looking for is a little validation from you that I might be on the right track. thank you in advance for your time and consideration period and most of all thank you for your videos that are not commercially stimulated

It's interesting watching all of this. I have an associates degree in ecology. I'm aware of many factors, but am not informed of how they actually interact. So I remain silent on the sidelines. I can't interject when the mob runs off in insane directions because nobody knows what they are talking about and the mind wants to fill in the voids of ignorance. Thank you for these sober moments of reason broken down for the layman to understand.

When I first heard about this, forums discussed it as being the same as "shampooing" your lawn with baby shampoo. Then the main surfactant in baby shampoo was sodium laurel/laureth sulfate. Both have a negative charge -- so maybe it would work? I did try some a few years ago but didn't really see much change. I had better results with core aeration, a broadfork and adding compost.
@GardeningInCanada

Yea you will. Mechanical is much more superior. The idea of it being a shampoo is actually a really great parallel

First of all, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Ashley. You are my go to regarding anything plant or soil related. Now, onto my question...hopefully you still look at these comments, that is. What do you think about using a pressure washer to aerate a compacted lawn? The reason I am asking, is because I was taught to walk around the lawn lawn, stabbing a pitchfork into it every two foot or so, rocking it back and forth (not digging it up), then allowing water from a running hose to soak the holes created by the pitchfork. Would something like this (pitchfork method) actually work, and, can I replicate with a pressure washer, having the water jet penetrating the compacted soil, working as a mechanical (so-to-speak) aeration which simultaneously injects water into the soil? Of course I would use the pressure washer in a pulsing manner, careful not to go 'hog-wild' tearing up the lawn. Cheers...and thank you again for sharing your information with us.

After de-thatching in PNW Zone 8 in late fall, my front lawn came out of dormancy with a very hard surface compaction without all the moss. I was planning on making JADAM Wetting Agent (Or JWA made with Lye, water and Canola oil). I planned to use it to help break it up the compacted clay and and allow for better water absorption. Is JWA the same as liquid aeration and if not, how are they different?
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada 3 жыл бұрын
They are different yea. So you’re going to be working more-so on flocculation in this case. But the main vector for you is going to be the oil which is going to cause things to expand.
