We often get asked how to aerate your lawn without an aerator, I thought it would be fun to try and find the best way to aerate a lawn manually without the need for a big machine
I will be breaking down some methods that professional grounds use that can be applied to your lawn today.
I will be talking through the pros and cons of how to aerate your lawn, with shoes that have spikes on them, a garden fork, a draper hollow core aerator, a drill bit and a garden auger for planting bulbs.

I cut the grass yesterday and lawn raked with electric raker .the lawn is looking sorry for itself . Should I wait till weeds die off properly and remove before over seeding? And when should I apply miracle gro liquid fertiliser please? Maybe I'm doing it all wrong lol . I'm. In South England with fairly clay like soil but never waterlogged . Cheers liked and subscribed

If you have a very compact lawn, or drainage issues (mainly due to swings and football.) this is a great option. Thanks to this video, I purchased a 24mm x 460mm wood drill (15€) and literally drilled a hole every 5cm in my garden (150sqm). It took a few hours but the results are great.

I did mine a couple of days ago using a garden fork, I only have a small lawn so investing in anything mechanical is out of the question. The subsurface is terrible, I hit so many rocks and stones which in many cases only allowed the fork to penetrate a couple of inches, so using an auger is an interesting idea, although I don’t think my back would be too grateful 🤣 I agree with your findings on the hollow tine aerator, tried one in the past and like you, found it to be completely useless. The spiked shoes always struck me as being a bit gimmicky, so never went down that road. Great video Robbie for those of us with a small lawn.

This has to be one of the most amusing videos made on lawn care 😂 The combination of wearing the aerator shoes and walking around with the SDS drill bit attached to the end of a drill drilling the lawn, will I sure result in the neighbours phoning for the people in white coats to come round with straight jackets in hand 😂. Seriously though some very excellent tips, the auger method is seeming to be the way forward with regards improving clayey soil like what you have in Belfast. Stick some clay breaker into the holes and it should improve drainage etc no end. Also I agree with the garden fork is very underrated, when it is tilted back causing the lawn to slightly heave it will help releave compaction and I think this is called 'fracture tine aeration'.

I’m not sure if they’re still in the market but my dad used to have one that you push along and it worked in exactly the same way as the machine in the video. The prongs were on a spring basis so as you were pushing it along, they would spring out of the ground. Quite effective but due to the damp, you had to keep them well oiled and lubricated. Great video mate

Thank you! I almost made a set of the spike shoes, but as our SoCal "soil" is so compacted, I was hesitant. As soon as you said SDS, I thought cool.....I got that! I have a pair of the aerator sandals, but mine have two inch nails and provided you have the straps really tight so your feet don't slip out they work really well. You can't just walk normally, you have to pretend you're treading grapes, and I do two passes at 90° to get good coverage . . .

Great work remember Dad saying key to good greens (grass in general ) is the 3 A 's Aeration Aeration Aeration .....! Do have some of those sandals and use them a bit they have longer spikes on 2 inches am I wasting my time ? Keep the steps close together so get lots of holes closer together gives the legs bit of work out only about 100 m square lawn takes about 20 minutes . Do aerate with a fork too and occasionally manually hollow tine with a 4 prong aerator with ejectors for soil on side . We've just moved into a new house and the garden out back was pretty small the previous owner loved their flipping paving slabs the house is covered in them, personally i cant stand them the whole lot will be grass eventually, I've just regrassed my entire lawn out back and made it bigger by removing about 40 paving slabs, got rid of all the old lawn and put all new seed down 3 months later and i have a good lawn, the issue i have is i have an outline of where the slabs used to be the soil underneath the old slabs was very compacted and the slabs where laid on copious amounts of flipping gravel ive tried to get most of the gravel out and replaced with soil raked over from the rest of the lawn but the ground there is pretty hard and compacted i tried as best i could to loosen the soil before seeding, the grass is growing but its fine grass and growing at a much slower rate than the rest which is nice thick bladed grass and very green, the grass where the slabs used to be is also a much lighter green some turning slightly yellowy green, i treated that section with lawn feed and the grass is a lot greener now but like your video says its probably lacking air and water and the ground is hard as nailes even with watering, would aeration help here also i dont have a tool only a garden fork i dont think i would get a proper tool into the ground its that hard 😁 .

Hi Robbie. Another great video, thanks. I am a small part time gardening business, just started doing some lawn care work this year. Have a good scarified Canon as for aerating I bought a BMS 300mm roller type with 40mm soled tines would like I hollow tine but could justify the cost as most of the jobs I do are small. I like to do a professional job, do you think that the BMS will do the job that is required. Used it a couple of times, hard work but quicker than a fork. Would appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks. Brian Jacobs.

Hey Brian, the BMS areator is for sport turf surfaces like golf and bowling greens... For lawns, you would be better hiring a pertol aerator until you can afford to buy one. For small lawns you could use that, but it's not really for that.

The manual aerators we can get in Canada by Fiskars have 2 prongs and have a tapered shaft so it's easier for the plugs to pop out. Holes are a bit bigger though, more like 3/4 to an inch dia. I have access problems for a machine so i don't have a lot of options.

I used the drill augers for my lawn. All heavy heavy clay, so I aerated a particularly bad spot next to the patio about 6*3m. however I used the deep drill and removed the clay and replaced with a combination of compost soil conditioner and sharp sand. Plugs were about 15cm apart. Has completely resolved my issue but took me about 6 hours! Top tip: be careful if you go to fast and it catches in heavy clay it'll pull the drill into the ground rather than remove soil.. and that's how I broke one of my drills!

Use the manual one with 2 tines instead of 5 tines. Might seem counterintuitive, but they are actually faster to use. It takes about 50 lbs of force per tine on average, depending on soil conditions of course, so 2 times required 100 lbs of force, while 5 tines require 250 lbs of force. With the 2 tine version, it is in and out like a knife through butter.

I have been getting in to the 3D printing hobby alot this past year so i might try and design something in CAD for this job especially! Maybe look into designing another type of footware with downward facing like bearclaws or a puncher that will attached to any rake or hoe head or for a 3ft post something thats easy on the back and angled curved 7 in claw? I'll think of some prototype as badly needing something that won't kill your back!
