Does liquid aeration or soil loosener really work? That's the question I set out to answer with an experiment in this video. I had some severely compacted ground in my backyard from the drought and also my shed being built. I tried out the liquid aeration soil loosener product from Simple Lawn Solutions and the results were surprising.

I think it would have been helpful to see the soil probe test done before watering side A and liquid aeration performed on side B. That way we could see, even at a rough guess, what PCT increase was achieved by watering alone versus water and liquid aeration.

I fertilize and all the other legit business and never seen my lawn do this. What a great product!!

Good grief. At least make an effort next time captain credibility. "While grass does require energy from the sun in order to grow, it doesn’t stop growing after the sun sets. Believe it or not, grass actually grows the most in the early dawn hours every day. Grass uses the energy that it takes from the sun everyday, and processes at night in order for it to continue growing nonstop, even in darkness. This is what leads to a growth spurt so to speak, right before the sun rises everyday. During the day, the grass is simply gathering and storing the sunlight, so that once darkness hits, the grass can process that sunlight, converting the energy into much needed nutrients like carbon dioxide and water, which then becomes sugar. Plants never stop using the magic of photosynthesis in order to grow."

@@kevindowe Save yourself some effort and go to Amazon.com and look up a Chapin 362 professional hose end sprayer for about $20-$25. You can pour this product (or others) into the reservoir and it siphons it out using a venturi suction without mixing it with water in the reservoir so when you are done you can just dump the left over from the bottom back into the original bottle at full strength. I use these professionally and although not a 100% perfect solution, it is better much than those low end sprayers that you attach to the bottle. This hose end sprayer just connects to the end of any typical water hose and comes with a built in standard metal water hose garden trigger. It can shoot out a stream tip if you need range, or you can put on the black tip to convert it over to a fan spray. This fan spray applies the product a little heavier on the sides than the middle, which I noticed last year when I sprayed glyphosate on my lawn before putting down new Zoysia seed. If you're OCD, just set the dial to 1/2 the strength, then do a second application about half way over your first.

Hey Ryan, you might not read comments on older videos, but thought I'd share this tip. On the yard butler core aerator, I found that if you cut the tips shorter on the tubes, still keeping the necked down part with an angled tip, it will actually clear dirt easier and "pull" cores. The necked down section is just a little too long in stock form for compacted soil or clay soil.
@JorgeHerrera-je6dc
@JorgeHerrera-je6dc 4 ай бұрын
This may be rookie question but don't you want longer bottom parts for deeper aeration reach?
@aradoran
@aradoran 4 ай бұрын
@@JorgeHerrera-je6dc yes it’s better to go deeper but if it gets clogged up to where it won’t pull cores then it’s basically useless. Cutting them a little shorter helped with clay soil.

I am looking for a way to loosen my soil without core aerating this year. I tilled last year 6 inches and due to horrible weathermen screwing up forecasts for about 5+ weeks, I was late putting down seed and didn't get to put down any pre-emergence herbicides last fall or this spring because my Zoysia wasn't established well enough, so i don't want to pull up weed seeds by core aerating with no pre-emergence barrier. I can't put any down now because I reseeded a few bare spots that didn't make it through the winter due to late planting. This will allow me to loosen the soil and allow the rhizomes and stolons to spread easier and fill in quicker. Thanks Ryan, this is just what I was looking for!

Just saw this and thought I would help support your findings. We just built a new home. Had a landscaper power rake the whole yard straw and seed. I kept watering consistantly until fall. We had very little grass come up mostly weeds. I decided to try this product instead of renting an aerator in the fall. I now have really nice grass growing in a few sections of the yard with about 80% coverage of the total yard. I was contemplating doing this again this spring with another application of seed, but I will not be renting an aerator again for my yard. Thanks for the post and the experiment.

Last summer a tornado (thank god only a F0) hit our neighborhood and knocked down one of my large oak trees which clipped the side of my house and came to rest in my side yard. Due to the tree and all the traffic from the tree guys, roofers and siders my soil became very compacted. Now, instead of my beautiful velvety lawn- I have large areas of bare spots, moss, and weeds. Before I resort to more drastic time and labor consuming efforts- I'm going to give this a try. Just put my Amazon order in, will update in a few weeks on the results. Fingers crossed!!

I don't think the shade made that big a difference. It's not like the direct sun heated the soil up that much, if at all, past the top few inches. Dig a hole 18 inches deep and you'll find the soil gets cool as you get deeper. Does the direct sunlight effect things? Sure, I just don't think it's that big of a deal. Try laying the water hose on compacted area watering at a slow, slow, low rate. Leave for at least 24 hrs letting water slowly soak into compacted area.

My yard is terribly bumpy, the mower bounces across it. What do you think about using the liquid aeration/watering along with a few rounds of rolling the lawn? Could that be a cheat to leveling?

Put a good dose of the liquid aeration out yesterday on my sloped lawn that has some areas of compaction and loves to run off excessively with rainfall. We shall see how well it works. I think my bald cypress debris that falls constantly makes the soil really sappy and waxy. That area is the worst for run off. Hoping it helps.

That should be a fantastic use for it as it helps to allow water to soak in more efficiently

Well you do a good job of it. I always learn something when I watch your videos. Please keep us posted on your results with liquid aeration. If it works, and if it eliminates the need for mechanical aeration, it's definitely the way to go. And are we ever going to get any rain as a follow-on to the few drops we got earlier this week? (I also live in Iowa. 0.38" for Des Moines for the month of July) If this is the new normal, I'm seriously considering planting my yard in crab grass, nut sedge, and creeping charlie. All three seem to grow without a lot of intervention, and seeds for all of them are available on line. The trick would be getting them to grow where and when you want them to grow. I got some compliments from my neighbor on my nutsedge, so the education and indoctrination begins. Come to find out, 'tiger nuts' are the edible rhizomes of nutsedge. How can you not like a plant that can grow anywhere and produces tiger nuts?

So glad to see this. I have been avoiding soil aeration simply because of the irrigation system, drains, cables etc. that in some cases I know are not deep enough. Definitely have compaction on some parts of my lawn. I am hoping this is a sufficient alternative.

Great video! I just bought this. If I want to use tenacity as post-m on my existing weeds, can I use this product the day before tenacity? I originally thought of using after tenacity but I've seen some tips on not disturbing the soil once tenacity is applied. Goal is to remove tons of weeds, improve soil, spring overseed with tall fescue.

Soil wetter vs liquid aerator?

Ryan, I recently purchased simple lawn solutions aeration and soil condition product. I also purchased some liquid iron. Question: Would I be able to use the soil conditioner. Then apply the liquid iron. Or should there be some time in between? Any and all comments will be appreciated.
@rjmiller2553
@rjmiller2553 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience these 2 products don't require some time in between applications. The aerator is just a wetting agent, a powerful surfactant. I think it would be worth adding some iron to the aerator spray, or spraying iron on the still wet grass after aeration

Just put down liquid aeration bc I thought I was about to reseed in 1-2 weeks. I watered it in. I’m reseeding with KBG (bluenote and bluebank). I didn’t realize you had to wait 4 weeks prior to seeding. Why? (Just north of Philly)

I love your videos, Ryan, but the more I research these liquid aeration products, the more I believe them to be a complement to mechanical aeration and not a replacement. It appears that liquid aeration products can only improve water infiltration into the soil. What it can't do is improve the gas exchange or change the bulk density of the soil like mechanical aeration can do. There are a few very interesting videos on the KZbins that really break down the science behind liquid and mechanical aeration. I tried the Simple Lawn Solutions liquid aeration method this fall instead of my normal mechanical aeration and overseeding. We'll see how it turns out next season. As a subscriber and fan of your channel, I'm really interested to get your thoughts on this matter.

Ryan, if I'm using this product in combo with the Ortho Dial n Spray, just to make sure I'm correct, I put 1 oz of product per 1000 sq feet into the ortho, do I add any water to the ortho container to dilute the product? Before reattaching hose attachment to the hose? My front lawn is approx 1000 sq feet so I'm unsure of the measurements, other than 1 oz of product is needed for that 1000 sq ft of coverage.
