Destiny is always a tricky subject to tackle. It all just comes down to whether you believe something was earned or not and if decisions were influenced by the end stage of that characters journey. I think you did a great job explaining it for Luffy even if it can be quite complicated trying to tackle whether the theme of "freedom" still exists within his character at this current point of the story. He earned it because he kept on improving along the way and didn't always win at the end and it's not the same thing as Naruto because he had access to whenever he got too mad while luffy couldn't just awaken the fruit right then and there as he had to train himself on how to use it for a long time. That's why I think he earned it.

No. Luffy has no free will. We know the Nika Fruit has a mind of it’s own. We know that Joy Boy was going to turn up when he did by prophacy. And we also know that after eating the Fruit Luffy became happier and more cheerful. From both him and other people. The Fruit affected his personality. And since we know by Prophacy Joy Boy would awaken exactly when he did all of Luffy’s effort culd just have been the Fruit knowing it wasn’t time yet. Luffy literally had no clue why he’d Awakened. He just knew he had. How do we know Luffy put in any effort to Awaken and it wasn’t just the Fruit going now is the correct time and all the ‘struggle’ Luffy went through was not just the Fruit releasing just enough power to win so that it could Awaken at just the right time? It’s why DF having minds of their own was a terrible reveal and why i hope beyond belief Shanks is confirmed to have nabbed it solely to sell it. Because otherwise it really muddles the idea Luffy had a choice.

"Luffy's effort culd just have been the fruit knowing it wasn't time yet" Terrible ass take, there has been many instances where Luffy would have died but because of external factors he survived, not because of the fruit
