Yes. The answer is yes. Lyoto is a proven master, and has taken karate to the highest levels of combat, winning a UFC title. The true meaning of karate is not for sport, but for combat, and Lyoto has brought it back to the essence. Many karate "masters" would lose in a fight against an amateur level kickboxer, and this is because our training is largely reduce to competition context, and is never truly battle tested. As a Shotokan practitioner, I was thrilled to see Lyoto's success at that level of competition, because he proved that karate can be effective in this context if applied correctly

Lijep pozdrav

Thank you so much for putting on the effort to making these videos. The concepts present in japanese martial arts can be very hard to grasp as a foreigner with no knowledge of the language, but you do a superb job at explaining them. I would be truly grateful if you could keep on making videos about these concepts like kyo/jitsu mugen/mushin etc. I find that the fact that you are a native japanese speaker with an outsanding command of the english language makes you an excellent teacher! Thank you very much for the explanation of this term! I heard about 'kyo' and 'jitsu' for the first time when I was watching a video by Kuro-Obi-World with Naka Tatsuya and Ryota Murata where Naka-sensei was demonstrating the difference between a 'kyo' attack and a 'jitsu' attack. I still don't get how he does it, but at least I know the theory behind it now 😅

Although the second character is different in Chinese martial arts, it's the same concept that is sometimes referred to as "soft vs hard". In arts like Tai Chi it's used to refer to the balance between pushing/pulling, forcing/yielding, etc. I'm actually impressed that you not only understood the concept, but recognized that, like yin and yang, it's not that you have one or the other, but that the balance or orientation changes. The fighter didn't just "have kyo", but his kyo and jitsu were oriented in a way that left him open to the front kick (and Lyoto went straight through that opening)

Fun fact: Lyoto's name supposed to be Ryuta. But, in brazilian portuguese, names that finish with the letter "a" are usually female names. So his father changed to Ryuto. And also, the way that the Japanese pronunciation works, probably the notary understood "Lyoto" instead of "Ryuto".

@luizgustavovasques46632 жыл бұрын
Jujutsu and jiujitsu are both attempts to write 柔術 in the roman alphabet. Jujutsu is more common nowadays, but some terms like Brazilian Jiujitsu were coined when other transliteration forms were more common. It has no actual connection to the word 実 that Yusuke is talking about in the video.

Great explanation oss!, but i think maybe the title its a little bit confusing, Machida its an amazing Karate exponent and has a lot of credibility won. So it could be better focusing the title on the explanation of kyojitsu, just saying.

Sensei, I appreciate your effort in making these vedios. I always learn something from them. May I add another interpretation to the kanjis 虚 and 実. While Machida uses 虚 from the standpoint of the opponent, one can also use 虚 to describe a fake move from the standpoint of the attacker, i.e., the fake (虚) moves are from the hands while the real (実) move is the kick. Therefore, Funaguchi's expression 戦は虚実の操縦如何に在り can also be interpreted as 'A battle is all about the control of the balance between 虚 and 実', i.e., a balance between the fake and real moves, all from the stand point of the attacker. (BTW, I practice Itosu Kai in Canada and love your episodes from Okinawa.)
@KarateDojowaKu2 жыл бұрын

@@kdefensemartialarts8097 it essentially the same thing, just different romanization. It really has to do with which romanization system during the time which brazilian jiu jitsu was founded, but the global consenus today is the Hepburn system. Focusing on the concepts of Kyo and Jitsu as opposite extremes, would it be correct to say that when combined they form a balance? In martial terms, would it be correct to say that by looking at nothing you see everything would be a form of Kyo-Jitsu practice on a visual basis? Another example that I have seen Kyo-Jitsu used in a martial context is the practitioner looks as though the are presenting a hard and stable block, but when contact with that block is made, there is no resistance and the practitioner actually blends with your movements instead of resisting them. Do I understand this correctly? Thank you in advance for your answer.

@luizgustavovasques46632 жыл бұрын
The “jitsu” in “jiujitsu” is an older form of writing “jutsu”. It’s quite diferent from the “jitsu” that Yusuke talks about in the video. “Jutsu” means both “art” and l“technique”, while “do” means “way”. It’s commonly taught that modern martial arts are “do” because they’re not lethal arts like the older “jutsu” arts, but this is not the whole story: some arts simply adopted the suffix “do” to look more in-line with modern times and escape prohibition, and many older “jutsu” styles were already pretty detached from actual combat way back when.
