Unfortunately, it's true. Magicians / mentalists put out every shit recycled idea for $60 10 times a year. I agree it's to a point of absurdity in some areas. It's not about re-using principles. But how many revolutions have we had vs regurgitations with clever names and new colorful packages? Even our most popular performers are predictable at this point, with some exceptions. No offense to creators like you, Craig, but this critique is real and requires reflection on the side of creation.

Sometime magic releases can feel like a new flavour of Coca-Cola, sure they're slightly different but they're all pretty much taste the same. That being said maybe you should think of them more like updates, there's nothing wrong if someone has updated an old trick to make it better.

I think thats how the world goes today not only in magic trick industry it happens almost in everything we use and live with today..electronics..gadgets accessories..everything basically base on old principle but new styles with new look and character attracts our attention in spending and buying. In magic i really love most of craig patty version like his focus deck...and the Bag Reborn trick are awesome...clever and something refreshing in magic...i dont know why this will come an issue in magic trick community. Come on ..its entertainment and we need people like craig to progress with coins ..cards...magic routine and so on.cheers❤...keep it coming craig! My regards to Matt too😂

I agree that the younger generation don’t know what playing cards are. Performing for my niece encouraged me to move away from cards, which is great. Recently ordered Repo and I’ve been having lots of fun with it, powerful and fantastic effect

I want to propose my take on David's opinion as someone who feels (somewhat) similarly. Many released products don't push magic forward, and I often look at most magic products as circling the drain. The classic example is Peek /CtW wallets, which are often variations on similar designs. To the Keymaster argument, I find that inspiration can be a separate discussion from this one IMO. Inspiration can bring new ideas that actually do push things forward. While some inspirations bring about the same ideas I brought up before, I think inspirations can be a way to bring up ideas that have been forgotten in a new light. Essentially, my whole statement boils down to Sturgeon's Law.

We are standing on the shoulders of giants and i think that using older principles is nothing wrong with if you adapt it to something thats a little different. But with popularity of release projects you see that when there is a complete new method it eill be more popular and more people talk about it in a good way then with a project where old principles are used mostly.

If you are genuinely doing something new with an idea, I'm in agreement with Craig, however so much of stuff being churned out now changes little to nothing, and for that I'm totally with David. I think it's a little disingenuous of Craig to conflate the two into just one group.

Age old principles remain in every form of life and are always, and will continue,being improved or tweaked, magic is no different. If it works for you great. If not fair enough. Progress depends on creativity. Cheers 🍻

Actually now to save money I always ask myself do I already have a trick that can give the audience the same experience of a trick that I already own? And if I really need an old method just with a new face on it. Take care

There are some people in the magic community who have lost sight of the fact that the audience does not know or care about the principle and how many times it has been used before. You are making magic more relatable and exciting for the audience - your creativity has breathed new life into magic. Level Up is one of my favourites and a great example of moving in a totally different direction with existing principles.

I find this discussion interesting. On one hand, Craig is proving David's point, that nobody is releasing anything new. But to me the question is, is this a bad thing? David makes it sound bad. I guess what confuses me is why people seem to really care about this issue (I really mean that, if you really care that someone is using an old principle with new props please tell me why). Who really cares if someone wants to sell a new ACAAN? I feel like people think they are forced to buy things. Many tricks Craig has recently released do not fit my style, and guess what, I didn't buy them (sorry Craig).

I will never understand why magicians can't realize that multiple ideas can coexist together. In music, you're supposed to write your own songs.They're supposed to be original. But there's also hundreds and hundreds of folk songs that anyone can sing at any time, and it's just folk music. No one will get mad at you play accuse you of copying someone for playing folk music. Also, covers are beloved. So you can either be original, you can do a cover, or you can play folk music. Some people do all three, some people do just too, and some people pick only one. All are equally valid

Unless you’re don henley who has a team of people to litigate against others playing “his” music…..which consists amongst other things of licks that have been developed from as far back and before the oldest blues players. In short, he’s a massive hypocrite, and a miser.
@andrewwiggin41019 күн бұрын
@rinkydinkfretboard8737 I don't know enough about him to have an opinion on that. But part of making a proper cover, you showing respect to the person you're covering. And if someone tells people not to cover their stuff, that should be respected. But if they try to claim ownership of a folk song they're an asshole
@rinkydinkfretboard87379 күн бұрын
@@andrewwiggin4101he is famously litigious. Seemingly for its own sake. I think he gets a kick out of it. To the point that he’s made himself a figure of mockery. It is possible to take things too far to the point it becomes self defeating or harmful. Henley has been a pioneer in pushing the limits of how far beyond normality that can be pushed. Attempting to Plant his flag in what others and law btw consider simply fair game. At this point he is more (in)famous for his lawsuits than his music. Shame. I don’t listen to the eagles anymore. Leaves a bitter taste. There’s so much music in the world…….. I don’t miss him. I am not alone in that sentiment ;)

I would love to here a similar talk about originality in performance. Opinion on using the latest commercial available effects on stage and close up. How much has to be original? Just to add my opinion, there has to be a certain degree of originality, spectators feel when the magician just performes prop magic or basic effects.

I suppose if your a creator you may watch a trick and you may have a light bulb moment and think I could use part of that in my trick and hey presto! It doesn't really matter as long as your not stealing someone's idea that they showed you and you say its yours and I'm sure you don't do that. Keep the good work up Craig I think your a decent guy and more importantly a good dad

I would argue that magicians have been innovating magic for several thousand years now. True "creation" is extremely rare. Nearly everything is innovation. I'm sure there are exceptions. For example, Chris Phillpot's 100th Monkey principle. It was, as far as I know, a NEW principle used to create a magic effect. It would be interesting to explore principles that are actually new and unique. Physics only allows for so many ways to accomplish something. What makes magic "new" is changing the props, combining methods, presentation, etc. Personally, I prefer calling people who produce magic effects innovators. There are extremely few new principles. The methods stay the same. The objects we used are changed to reflect the time in which we live. I give a big HURRAH to all the magic innovators who keep my wallet barren.
@rinkydinkfretboard87379 күн бұрын
My opinion. No. But you need to make sure you are giving me something I couldn’t cobble together myself in a matter of minutes before you charge me in excess of a few hours or more of the average wage, “secret” or no. Just because magic relies on performing without revealing the method to the audience, doesn’t give anyone the right to charge £50 for a rubber band, when the purchaser only realises it after the sale. That would be a scam in any other walk of life and it’s a scam in magic. And I include in my assessment of what I could cobble together, un or poorly scripted, poorly shot and worse incorrect tutorials, that cannot be downloaded and require multiple hoops to jump through to view. If it’s worth what you’re charging…..lit’s worth providing a hard copy!? Edit: for avoidance of doubt…..not aimed at the uploader of this video at all. I’ve not bought any of his releases yet. But I think lots of people will have paid money for something from someone else, that will resonate with my comment. Naming no names.

For me magic should be as close to a free market as possible. In fact people have so many different styles and its great to have 10-20-30 variations of a same trick. We are often lazy and use the trick as it is tought and so having variations is good. I think principles are often too centralized around the circle of the creator and thus his style. Also no one is coercing anyone to buy anything. If people prefer X's variation they will buy it who cares. Maybe the community should look at a royalty structure where you can publish your own version of the trick and the original creator (if it applies) can get a check. A good example is magix of french twins. Amazing effect but the card and condom they provide are shit, yet no one can republish the concept with better props or even something similar. It's unfair to the trick as it dies out. Same for over expensive tricks that ali baba will make the same for 1/10th of the price. Why not just relax this monopolistic aspect and make it more decentralized with royalties in perpetuity for the original creator ? And so we can finally solve this problem of "republishing" and attributions etc..

I’d go further. Personally (and this really is about how I behave and no one else) magic is not a saleable commodity. I would never charge for a performance, except to cover expenses, and I don’t consider “magic secrets” to have any monetary value. If I was to market a magic prop, it would be at a fair price for the item, not for the method of use. I feel the same about music. And any art. Which is and always has been a vocation, not business. As far as I feel disposed to it anyway. Others will see it differently, and give them joy of that. And I’ve paid through the teeth to see big artists “live”. But if I’m honest, ALL of the gigs that I’ll remember most fondly are either sessions being played amongst or by friends in an informal setting or at tiny venues where frankly it’s u likely the performer made a profit at all. To me magic, like music is a gift that I can give. And that is it’s own reward. I wouldn’t take your money for it, if you wanted me to. That’s an extreme take and very personal to how I behave not an expectation I place on others. But within a section of people who share that philosophy (knowingly or not) lies some of the best magic, art……all of it, you will ever come across. Not from me, but certainly from others with that viewpoint.
