What he meant was, that people who don't know him usually call him that. The people close to him know what his real name is, so the people who give him one time interviews or stuff like that he will not lk to again anyway. Probably more in that context.
@Telefiend16 күн бұрын
You are misunderstanding what he meant. He meant if he ran into someone like me, and I called him Mark, he realizes I will likely never run into him again. People that see him on a regular basis call him Mark Paul. I don't, and likely will never see him on a regular basis, so I don't know that. I am sure if I started seeing him regularly, he would either correct me, or I would notice everyone close to him calls him Mark Paul, and I would correct myself.
@chaosgyro16 күн бұрын
People who call him Mark don't know him, and as they are unlikely to EVER know him, or even have another conversation, there's no point in making a big deal about it. Case in point, I only realized today that his name was hyphenated. I thought Paul was a middle name.

At work (I work at a radio station as an on-air announcer, been there for almost 25 years now) nearly everyone calls me Jacob and I announce myself on-air (during my program) as Jacob as well, although some of my regular listeners have now come to call me Jake. When people meet me they always ask “do I call you Jacob? do I call you Jake?”.. I tell them that I do not care and that I go by both. There are a few famous Jacobs who I think prefer to go by Jake (such as Jake Gyllenhaal, who is about the same age as me) but I personally think that either name is fine.

Calling someone by their preferred name is a sign of respect. It’s very common in Dutch (hence he has with his father being Dutch) that there are double names. Floris-Jan. At my customer they were confused because I call myself Ray, and it says Raymond. So do move asked what do you prefer. I’m like: “it doesn’t matter, I listen to both and even Doetjes (which is my weird last name which in Dutch means spineless persons) and Dodo which is an ancient nickname from a tv character called Brave Dodo that I liked in the 70s as a toddler”. And my colleagues are like “okay….but which do you prefer Ray or Raymond.” -“so I joked, when I hear Raymond in worried and wonder, what did I do now?! Because my mum would say Raymond instead of Ray when she was upset with me.” People are too easily triggered these days, what’s in a name?!
@raeraebadfingers15 күн бұрын
My name is Rachel, there are very very few people I'm okay with calling me by my birth name. I go by Rae. Or Rae Rae.
@CallousCoder15 күн бұрын
@ Actually I’m not going with my birth name either. Officially my name is Rene Raymond, but when my (step)dad legally adopted me, my name last name changed, to the unfortunate Doetjes (spineless persons - but hey, I gained a superb dad so all the teasing of the name I took for granted) and so I could also officially change my first names so I swapped them. I hated the name Rene because to me that was a girl’s name-the girls across the hallway from us was called Renee. That’s hel a 5 year old’s brain works. Hence when I was 3 or 4 I wanted to be named Dodo after that TV puppet (probably worse in hindsight as a dodo is associated here in NL with being dumb 🤣). My best friend’s name is Rene, and he was an apprentice and lived here with me when he got kicked out of the house - hence we’ve gotten so close we are like brothers; especially after my little brother died in 2014. Him and his now wife became surrogate family. In Thursday the 2 if us go to a metal concert. Their oldest son (5) always calls me uncle Dodo as does his 3 year old sister. And we went out last weekend and I treated them on something and his wife said “thanks Raytje (little Ray, it’s a Dutch thing)”. And the 5 year old says: “is uncle dodo not your real name? Is it Ray??” So I explained that it’s official Raymond or Ray but that I’m fine with whatever they want to call me. Then he asked: “did your mum name you dodo?” So my friend’s wife said: “No daddy, gave uncle Dodo, that nickname”. And Rene is like: “no it wasn’t me! He already had that nickname.” She’d had an epiphany after 20 years: “oh I thought it was something that you came up with, it’s such a typical thing you’d think off.” So I said that in high school it was an acronym for “Dorstige Doetjes” (thirst Doetjes my last name) because I could chuck a lot of vodka and still play basketball and ride my bike without issues. And our manager/friend would call me Doet or Dodo. Because we had another intern before Rene, who was the youngest brother of a youth friend (who also died) and he knew me by my nickname. So that moment Dodo got back into the vocabulary. So my brain is trained to react to Ray, Raymond, Doetjes, Dodo and Doet 🤣And fine with all of it. I just probably wouldn’t react to Rene as in 49 years that hasn’t been used for me.

He has such a late 80's early 90's jock mentality. I lived through those days and knew people like him. I wish I never knew those people. How's it going Mark ‼️

It's funny. Usually, when people see the name Thomas, they may call them Tom or Tommy. My first name IS Tommy but when they see that they try to call me Thomas. I'm like "no, it's not Thomas, that's my cousin, my name's Tommy". Then they say "oh, ok Tommy". Then I go "yeah, call me Shane". Which is my middle name, which is what I go by but it usually causes them to stop for a second. It's funny to me because of how many times it's happened. Then once I had a woman actually argue with me that my name was Shawn. Even after I corrected her and told her it was Shane, she tried to argue with me until her daughter, that knew me, came by and told her that YES, it is Shane. It was so weird.

To Mr. Gosselaar's point about his son, there's a definite difference between Mike and Michael (regardless of legal name). The example I've heard that best describes the difference involves two Chicago sports icons: Jordan and Ditka. Besides the "I wanna be like Mike" campaign, Jordan is always a Michael. Ditka is always a Mike. Look at those two personalities, and you can see the difference. Neither is better or worse, simply different.

Jordan's friends and family actually call him "Mike" or "MJ" and he went by Mike through much of college. So, not exactly.

I used to hate “Chuck” because that was my grand father’s name, and I used to go by Charlie but at work it just became easier to go by legal name Robert. Just kidding it’s Charles.

My older brothers name is Robert, named after his dad and grandfather. But only family calls him Robbie. And he always says that to people after they hear us call him Robbie. He corrects them that his name is Robert to them. Only family is allowed to call him Robbie. One time me his brother called him Robert, he said to me to never call him that again. It felt so weird calling him that. Even Our nephews call him uncle Robbie.

I knew a guy named Robert but his ex wife would call him bob to get under his skin because he hated being called bob. His like my name is Robert not bob. She was a ex for a reason. He should have realized this before they got married though.
