I've been growing marijuana for 30+ years and I have found it does help to start your seeds during the period coming up on the full moon. It gives me better germination rates and healthier plants. I've found that germinating during the new moon I don't get as good results and more seeds end up dieing before they get a tap root, they end up going to mush in the seed shell.

My grandmother followed the moon and celestial calender, and use tips from the Old Farmers Almanac...with out doubt or question. Her gardens were healthy, abundant, lush. Plus she suggested trimming the hair on the full. She would use the first spring water to wash hair because she claimed it would grow long. But she loved her garden she played music and sing to her flowers and plants.

My MIL swears by this system and used to tell me how nothing I planted would work (spoiler alert - she was wrong). I decided to try to look into it and came up against the same dead ends as you. Only now as I’ve deceived to make a video about it I’ve started looking about again and found your video. Like a lot of things it goes wrong when you get dogmatic about it. Thanks again.

YESSSSS I’m so happy you made a video about this. I’ve been watching my plants in line with the moon phases and I noticed growth spirts during the two week period from the new moon to full moon “moon rising” and then they take a two week break towards the new moon. This is more prevalent in my perennials. I’ve also been grafting by the moon and have noticed better results during the rising of the moon. I really do believe this has something to do with the flow of water in the plants and soil.

I'm fascinated by this stuff which is why I lean towards witchy things. Living on an island I certainly have experienced more directly the phases of the moon and the impact on the sea and weather. I find myself adjusting my seed planting schedule according to the weather, which in a way is correlated with phases of the moon. I have found waiting for certain phases of the moon to pass or arrive had been helpful with my garden planning and spacing out my seed starting so that I wasn't overwhelmed by too many plants at once. Perhaps nothing magical or special but certainly a helpful tool for time management and efficiency-lol

Tidal forces do affect groundwater, but it's at fairly great depths and changes the weight and pressures on deep ground soil. I don't know if botanists bother with studying it much, but it's a fairly important thing to account for by civil engineers who need to predict soil compaction over decades under 200,000 ton buildings with piles driven 80+ feet into wet sand relying on friction to hold them level. There's probably fairly extensive material on it in civil engineering info hubs!

@@GardeningInCanada I think it's more like the gravitational forces of the moon pulling on whichever area at any given time counters a little of the Earth's gravitational pull, loosening the soil ever so slightly and making it easier for water to flow? Groundwater being practically everywhere if you go deep enough. I'm just a casual fan of civil engineering topics so maybe we need Practical Engineering to make a video on this.

This is fascinating stuff! Even the smallest light leaks are a concern for people who grow photoperiod plants indoors, yet outdoor growers of the same photoperiod cultivar aren’t concerned at all. Why? The moon reflects light, so I’ve wondered about this for a while. Also, if moon impacts atmospheric pressure, would it impact the plant’s gas exchange rate? I need to find a source on the atmospheric pressure thing though. It was just a thought regarding something I read a while back.

I wonder if nighttime pollinators (e.g. moths) benefit from the extra light around the full moon and it influenced the plants to ramp up the pollen for the full moon.
@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын
So! Actually the pollination study did talk about that. This Smithsonian article talks about it a bit. The pollen is illuminated by the moon which is what caused the moths (&flies) to essential find it. My favourite part of the entire article: “Suddenly-presumably with the help of wine-an idea struck: Could E. foeminiea’s pollination somehow be connected to the lunar cycle? “It started as a joke that evening, I should say,” Rydin says.” This remind me of myself when I come up with video ideas 🤣. “Whelp this is either going to flop OR it’s going to be a beautiful lit review” www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/wereplant-releases-its-pollen-by-light-full-moon-180954827/

The lunar ocean tides are formed by the DIFFERENCE in gravity from one side of the earth to the other, causing the oceans to form an egg shape. This requires a length scale of the size of the earth. If there’s a lunar affect on plants in your garden, it’s not a tidal force.

Thanks for the video. I'm a want-to-believer, but the tides ebb and flow in a single day. So the only way I can see that the moon phases e.g. increase harvesting at full moon is that there is a pulling up and down in the water inside the plant, creating surges of growth. I don't think that because lakes don't have tides the land is not affected. If the whole shebang is not about a pushing and pulling, it makes no sense planting according to the moon when it's on the other side of the earth at that specific time. Lastly, if the full moon makes people ratty, we don't even live by gravitational pull in the ground, meaning plants should be more sensitive to moon phases than those of us it affects. Thank you so much for all the work you put into your videos, love your channel.

Thank you for another great video, we found it very fascinating. There are a few interesting websites that seem to refer and discuss the Hebrew Lunar Calender as a method to differentiate each season, and to know what to plant (and harvest) following the lunar cycle changes - but not much is mentioned on the actual effect the moon has on such plants (if there is one). If it is a myth that the moon has an effect on plants, is it possible that the Hebrew Lunar Calendar (or similar ancient calendars) could be the source of the myth by those who didn’t understand its purpose? If the moon does have an effect, is it possible our ancestors had a much deeper understanding of plant growth than the best gardeners of today?🤔

There is an interesting experiment that we pondered using indoor plants and LED lights (with a dimmer). Because the plants usually need full darkness during the night, and because the full-moon gives off more light than any typical night, therefore the week leading up to the full moon (when the moon is brighter than typical), try leaving the LED lights on for the plant during the night(s) very dimly (at an approximate candelescent value to that of the moon, or the LEDs lowest value) to simulate the moon, then document the findings. Does it encourage better growth? If so, does this indicate to the plant when to do ‘something’? What would/could that ‘something’ be? It would be a long(er) term experiment that would need to occur over many moon cycles. It would be interesting to see these results. 😊

I'm curious about the effects of putting plants on a trellis or replanting them during certain moon phases; i suspect they might be more bendy at during full moons, or more resilient to shock during new moons?, but i'm very new to gardening. Learning the science is fun cuz the knowledge can be used to help out our plant friends, but there's still so much beautiful chaos in nature: why is one plant stunted while its twins and neighbors thrive? ☺️🍀✨
@swatch123452 жыл бұрын
Seems plausible. I would guess there are plants that are adapted to distribute pollen to line up with whatever pollinators are there. If those insects or whatever it may be are active at night, then more moonlight would increase chances of reproduction. Selective pressure can make some amazing changes in plants. You should check out Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't on youtube if you haven't already. Pretty interesting stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if older civilizations used the phase of the moon so that they could know when to expect maturity/harvests. We have calendars and internet and the date on our digital devices everywhere. I suspect day counting was a much more frustrating process for people before calendars were readily available. It's also worth remembering that the "roman" calendar we use now was only implemented in the year 1BC ...hence for ancient civilizations, calendars didn't even used to exist the way we know them now. Imagine how useful moon phases would be when looking up at the sky if we didn't have a calendar! I wonder if ancient civilizations would laugh at us now for being so amazed/mystified by their "fixation" with the moon. Love the videos :)

I have been paying attention to the ascension and decention of moon and how much water a plant holds in its roots or in the plant itself. I have not investigated long enough to make firm conclusions. As of this season I am leaning towards the idea that when the moon is ascending it is a good time to fertilize when water is being pulled up into the plant (when the moon is traveling farther and farther north or overhead in the northern hemisphere.

So, the moon does effect the water in the great lakes. So, I am not sure why you didn't find that but a simple Google search and there it was. Furthermore, as an observer of a creek that was near my home since I've been a kid the water would always pull back at certain times of the day and then be flowing at other times of the day. I use to be mesmerized of this event. It only happened when it was barely flowing. I came out in the morning and the water would be back from the spillway about a few feet and then in the afternoon it was flowing over the top. It changed daily that was one example. I am older now and my only explanation is that it was the tug of the moon. If you have a better explanation I would be glad to listen.

Moon has to do with water/ bugs/ bacteria in the soil rising and lowering, full and new moon it rains and its easier to transplant as it's shady (the plant don't go into shock as much, plus the live rainwater helps the transplant to grow faster) Now this is helpful in farming, not gardening, farming means acres.
