This is such a great video! You covered every question I had on the subject. Your sister's position is where I'm at, too. A schedule, even if arbitrary, really helps. :) Perhaps living according to the phases of the moon is also helpful because unlike calendar months, lunar cycles are more consistent. Hehe I also chuckled a bit over the bold promises of the moon book. The word "Lunacy" came to mind. And using astrology led to less than "Stellar" results lol. Thanks for a great show!

Thank you! Loved your astrological pun... that's a good one 😆. And I'm glad I covered all your questions! I absolutely think there is something to being aligned with the moon phases in our own lives and I've no doubt it affects many things (as a parent of young children I can tell you exactly when we're coming up on a full moon 😂). I'm hard pressed to believe assigning properties to certain astrological signs has much to do with anything though. I'd love for someone to come along & change my mind-- but I've just not seen enough evidence. Thanks for watching! Take care & happy first day of spring!

The only thing is, planting things one day apart isn't going to really make a noticeable difference. The order of the cosmos isn't like flipping a light switch, one day is" good", the next day is "bad". I would plant some in the middle of a "good" cycle and others in the middle of a "bad" cycle, which is about two weeks apart, if I recollect correctly, then compare the two.

Here in the tropical Puerto Rico we plant by the phase of the moon and we do see the big difference of our plants especially our harvest, and insect infestation and health growth cycle of the plant. We swear by it. All our organic fruit harvest is healthy especially up in the north west mountain region.

I've been aware of this subject for years. My parents were believers in following the moon signs when planting the garden. I made it easy to follow by picking up a free calendar at my local feed and seed store. It has all the info like the farmers almanac, printed on every day of the year, so it's easy to see when the signs change and what garden tasks are best on every day. I have followed it this year to see if it helps, it can't hurt! Great subject and enjoyed your video very much. Thanks for the lesson and for sharing. BTW, I transplanted my first batch of broccoli to the garden containers yesterday. (zone 7b) I have a small plastic covered frame that I set over the containers at night, so I'll do that for a week or so. They are looking great and had got way too big to keep inside. I guess I may have started them a little early :) Take care.
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Using a guide like that definitely makes it easier! And you're absolutely right- it can't hurt. I'm glad your broccoli is looking great. In 7b this should be just about the optimal time to be setting transplants out- so I wouldn't worry that you've done it too early. Take care & have a great week!

Planting by the moon is more to do with growth and yield. Yes, the water table is higher with full moon. The location of the moon by zodiac sign I believe has to do with past weather patterns. I think it’s much better to go by the moon then planting potatoes on Good Friday, which I gave up that old custom as that date moves around a lot. 🌝 A crescent moon in the cupped position is said to be holding water and rain should be in the forecast 🌙 and I believe a sun dog means future rain. A moon halo also means unsettled weather coming. Fun stuff!

Been a nasty cold windy day here also. First day of spring and woke up to 28 degrees. Now that is how ya kick off Spring! LOL. Great info on the moon planting. Rene gets a gardeners calendar every year. While she goes by it for planting her stuff, While I really don't pay it any attention. I go by what the weather is going to be. Impressed that you had enough open-mindedness and patience to try this out. I don't think it's so crazy to wonder if something could affect gardening if it so obviously affects tides (maybe if you think of groundwater like an ocean). But it seems just like it's pure astrology though which is more about culture than science.

Thanks, Hayley! The moon affecting things part of it does make sense to me. The part about planting when the moon is in certain zodiac signs just seems too far out there- like you said, based more in a cultural belief than science. Nice video...interesting and challenging. And who doesn't want to know more about growing a better garden?! Have played around with the signs somewhat off and on. One thing to be noted was WHEN a sign was moved into during the day. If you were in Virgo that morning but the sign was changing to Libra that afternoon.....one might actually plant in a barren sign if they planted that morning but a fruitful sign if they planted in the afternoon. The signs do not change at the stroke of midnight as the date would. With all that said, if you are wanting to plant according to wax and wane---sometimes the signs do not match up with the wax and wane. Thereby, I have decided to get a farming calendar from the feed store or Amazon and try to do the best I can with the wax and wane but still study the sign method. Maybe something will really click one day and I will have see the light. Jesus bless.

We’ve been planting by full moon for years, but very simply… for example our calendar says Full Moons are around the 16th-18 this Spring 2022 here in CA, so we plant a week before full moon ie. around the 10-12 (watering them with saved rain water for extra boost =) I’m certain It helps for sprouting, especially stubborn seeds! I don’t know about the timing of the rest such the trimming, weeding, etc.

I think the point you're missing is back to back days aren't enough time difference. A day on either side of your timeline likely can be "close enough" especially considering the moon is moving through the skies and signs not only at night, but all day. So one "day" begins a 12:01am and ends at 11:59pm, according to the modern slave labor calendar. However it's also common to begin celebrating a holiday with the evening prior to the day or date. In conclusion, your experiment was faulty because you chose days too close together. If anyone else were to try this, they could be much more thorough and actually testing, by moving their plantings fully into a different quarter. Also consider, pruning causes dieback during the first quarter, so that would be another visual test. However, both the elementary test attempted in this video and my above suggestion, need more than just a week or two to see the difference. Check findings at the end of the season. Did the batch planted on optimum days produce more fruit by the end of the season? This was not a very scientific video. I wouldn't trust someone trying to test a theory that isn't even interested in fully understanding it.
@GrowfullywithJenna2 жыл бұрын
I intentionally chose back to back days using the charts in the book, as this would give the most accurate comparison. The trouble with spacing them out into different quarters is that you are introducing too many variables for the comparision to be accurate, such as different weather patterns.

An off topic question...I just received castor bean seeds. Do you direct sow or start indoors? The goal is to grow huge plants like yours and suprise my better half this summer! What a beautiful sunny weekend we had! I'm up to 5 30" x 47' beds with 6" of compost and 3 drip lines in each bed. It's coming along! Thanks as always!
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
@@tan2230 how fun! Typically I start my castor beans indoors, but only about 2-3 weeks prior to my desired transplant date. They grow SUPER fast. That being said, you can easily direct sow them as well, and they will still get giant. Last year I started them in biodegradable peat pots (the kind where you can bury the whole pot) so that I wouldn't have to disturb the roots when transplanting, and that worked really well. And yes- this weekend was glorious! Sounds like you've got an awesome set up there.

I purposely don't water when seedlings are young. Once they emerge I don't water when direct sowing and planting by the lunar phases does help in that context. I'm sure what I'm saying wouldn't apply in an arid climate but I'm in Michigan. So if you water your plants regularly you might not notice any difference in plant growth. Also lettuce and peas are really easy to grow plants. I think some of the more finicky types of plants would be better test candidates if you want to see a more dramatic difference. Also things that bolt instead of remaining bushy can be related to planting time but it's not the only reason that happens. I think lunar planting was more important when it was difficult, if not impossible to construct elaborate irrigation systems for crops in more primitive situations throughout history. Thanks for the video

Which is what one would expect to happen. However, if the claims that planting by the phase of the moon and the sign the moon are to be believed, the seeds I planted during the optimal phase and sign should have out-performed in some way (better germination, faster growth, etc.) the ones planted during a 'no-grow' sign.

It all depends on either Tropical Astrology, Sidereal Astrology, or Sidereal Equal Astrology. If you use the Tropical in northern part of the country which has cold weather and snow will not be in harmony with the universal flow of the planets and the moon. You will not be in the correct seeds, plants and so on with the correct elements. In the northern states such as Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and so on it is best to use the Sidereal Equal Astrology for your plants, roots plants, vegetable, fruits, and flowers.

It would've been nice to see you do a few more experiments... Especially ones when you'd plant for each phase of the moon. Although that wold be 8... Because I can see why the results for the April 1st and April 2nd would be similar, because if you happen to plant within a few degrees of the zodiac sign next to it, which is called a cusp, then there are a lot of influences from the other sign. Also, I'm not sure if you were using a tropical system or a sidereal... And also, not sure if you were using the actual signs lengths in degrees... Or if you were using equal house (30° each). The zodiac signs are all different lengths in reality. Some signs taking up twice as much as others. I know Aries is small... About 18°...? I think. And I believe Virgo or Libra is really long.

Timing is everything. Being Native American, I agree with this. You’re growing leaps and bounds. Happy planting 🌻🌾🌱🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
I agree that timing is incredibly important! Obviously, practices would vary greatly from tribe to tribe, but I'm curious if you have any information on how Native Americans would have used the moon in planting. When I was researching phenology for my 'Planting by Nature's Signs' video I found quite a few references to Native American tribes using phenological signs (though they didn't call them such) to decide when to take on important tasks, including planting. But I've not yet come across any information regarding the use of moon signs or phases for planting (though I know the phases of the moon and position of the stars & constellations has historically been of upmost importance to Native Americans). Living in harmony with nature's cycles is something that many (most?) of us have lost as modern humans and learning how to get back to that rhythm would be beneficial in many ways. I'm still not sold on timing my planting up to match certain zodiac signs, but I do think the phases of the moon undoubtedly affect things in our lives and it would make sense that it would affect plants as well. I appreciate any insight you might have! Take care & enjoy the rest of your weekend!

@@GrowfullywithJenna planting with the moon phases in mind worked well a while ago. It’s seems that what’s been going on in our skies, we have to do our best to just take care of the plants and trees we’re growing. I read your response to my mom & she said what we do today will effect the next 7 generations...she’s asked me several times why the sky is changing... I wonder how using greenhouses will help with this. We do bless each seed & thank it for the gifts we receive.

Sorry about that, the old Philosopher's knew what it was, we have plants that are associated with the sun like sunflowers plants associated with the Moon like bananas, plants associated with Mars like cactus and Thorn bushes, the old Philosopher's and Alchemists speak about the oil of gold you could extract from a plant associated with gold like the sunflower oil, but you did not extract it like they do today. You had to do this a certain way or you would ruin the virtue of the oil of gold, there are substances in the oil that promote life and health, if you extract it the wrong way you destroy the virtue of the oil of gold, what do you think essential oils are but the are ruined during processing also, if you went into another dimension sun flowers would be made of pure gold and banana trees would be made of silver, then you come back to this life and they are just trees, nothing but ordinary trees, but you could still extract the gold and silver virtue from them called essential oils. These could be used for healing, there is so much to know, it would take me days or maybe months to disclose all there is to know concerning these spiritual virtues of Supernatural oriigin, we know so little,

Sunflowers are not really a tree, they are more of a garden plant but there are trees related to the sunflower, just like mango is related to poison ivy, that is why so many people are alrrgic to mango. They are probably ruled by Saturn which is a star of rigor and times of tribulation and death,
@robertfritchey31392 жыл бұрын
Anything ruled by Saturn is associated with the element lead, but lead isn't always bad, we learn our greatest lessons through trials and tribulations,

Definitely worth the watch. The peek at your garden made me smile. It is beautiful! 😃 ✌&❤ from Aromas California! I hope this year brings abundance and good health. I know it's irrelevant to your video but what did you have to do to get sponsored by a seed company? Was it as simple as just asking that company to send you seeds and letting them know you were building a demonstration site that they would go towards? Thanks in advance for enlightening me further.
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan- that clip of garden was from this past October and the colors just floored me. I think that's the loveliest the garden was all year! Regarding your question-- I'm not sponsored. The way I came into what I'm doing now has a bit of a backstory. For 15+ years I worked in merchandising, marketing and R&D for a home gardening company called Gardens Alive, based out of Indiana & Ohio. Within the company I did a little bit of everything through the years-- from writing catalog copy & orchestrating photography to managing their field trials. Several years ago I decided to strike out on my own. But Gardens Alive still needed a trial manager, so I arranged to continue running trials on a contract basis- essentially I work as a consultant for their company. Now of course, working in the horticultural industry for so many years, I've developed a lot of relationships with other vegetable & flower seed breeders. I still get trial seeds from many of these folks every year, in exchange for my detailed feedback on how they performed in my growing conditions. That being said, I don't see any reason you couldn't contact seed companies and pitch the idea that you'd be willing to trial seeds for them. I would think that some of them would be interested in having you do this. The other thing you might consider is becoming involved with an organization like SeedLinked www.seedlinked.com/ You can sign up to trial seeds for them. They will send you seeds for free, but in return you need to provide information about how the varieties performed for you. I hope this answers your question! Take care & have a wonderful week!

Yeah planting by the moon is absolute rubbish unfortunately. You can prove it scientifically : neither the light (too weak) nor gravity (too weak too, on plants) will have any effect on your seedlings. The light from you streetlights will have more of an effect than a full moon, and so will planting next to a tall building, from a gravitational field point of view... But more importantly, it has been proven time and time again that it doesn't make a difference sowing on a "bad" moon day. The first documented proof was from one of Louis XIV's gardeners, in the 17th century... Yet there are still millions of gardeners who follow the lunar calendar or even more complex calendars like in biodynamic gardening... Both of those practices are nothing but myth. If it's part of your religious belief, fine, it's a free country. But what I don't like is when people claim biodynamic gardening makes everything taste better (which is nonsense) or that a lunar calendar is better and that things won't grow on a "barren" day.
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
It certainly didn't make any difference in the little test I ran, but whatever 'floats your boat' as the saying goes. If folks want to follow the lunar calendar, more power to them!
