I think it's time to drop AC: Unity and replace it with AC: Origins. Origins in particular is the most CPU demanding title I've personally came across in recent times. So it would be good to include this when testing CPUs.
@rekoj086 жыл бұрын
AnalogFoundry The game itself is not that demanding on the CPU, what really hogs it, is the DRM, codes and processes against pirating. If that was left out of perspective Unity would be a lot more CPU intensity than Origins.

The high CPU usage is nothing to do with DRM. Go to an open area in Origins (ie. the desert) and the CPU usage will drop to like 10%. If the DRM was causing high CPU usage then this wouldn’t happen.

@alphaxion6 жыл бұрын
These patches introduce latency when dealing with system calls, you should run tests with network play as that will be making many calls to the network adaptor over running the game in single player after it has loaded. Also, you should do tests with load times and reduced memory so the system is performing more page file calls, as it's these which will see performance hits.

@alexatkin6 жыл бұрын
Even though Intel are STILL faster than Ryzen for most normal usage scenarios even AFTER the patch?
@Nusma6 жыл бұрын
Alex Atkin "normal" usage scenarios don't run at >90 fps. And even for someone who games at 120 fps it makes no difference if the game runs at 150 on intel or "only" 130 fps on amd. Also you have to concider that games will get way more multithreaded in the future wich makes processors with many lower performing cores more future proof than processors with few high performance cores. And even with that tradeoff in mind the actual single core difference between intel and amd is only around 10-15% as seen in the video.
@Nusma6 жыл бұрын
Neiva It's happening though. I'm sure you haven't missed the fact that console processors all use low clocked octa cores. And Devs are adjusting. It's not happening over night of course since many newer games use rather old engines but as new engines are developed and devs learn how to multithread properly it's only a matter of time. You are right, it's a slow process that has been dragging on for years now but the changes can already be seen. Games like Far Cry Primal who count on single core performance will decline for sure. At least that's my bet as someone who won't upgrade his cpu for another 5 years or so.
@awesomeferret6 жыл бұрын
Nusm4 trust, but not frames. Intel is still the choice for gaming. But there is an argument to be had for trust (although I personally disagree, Intel thought it couldn't be hacked after all, it's not like they asked anyone to figure it out).

Most board manufacturers are pretty bad when it comes to updating their consumer level stuff once it's no longer the latest and greatest. If you have a look on the WinRAID forum, they've got a program called UBU BIOS updater that will slipstream the latest microcode and option ROMs into your BIOS. For me, as someone who uses my PC only for gaming (and has a few laptops for work use, including the macbook I'm on now), I won't be updating the microcode and will be rolling back any windows updates. The worst that could happen is that someone gets to watch me play STALKER or GTA V...

Ok so I went from 86.5 FPS on average to about 84 FPS on average with the baked in ROTTR benchmark at 1080p and highest preset. This may be within variance but it was repeatable and consistent. This was on a Ryzen 1700 @ 3800Mhz and a moderate to heavy overclock on a RX 580. There is a way to disable the meltdown fix for AMD chips supposedly. Will have to try this as well as it would be nice to get my SSD perf back.

Well, I've got the 8700k, so 3 MB more cache, 6 more threads - And I have her running 5 GHZ all core, Uncore, and Cache - with my RAM at DDR4-3100 speed. So I take it that I will see, at worst, MAYBE 1-3 FPS lost in Witcher 3.. I bought G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, but for SOME reason, even when I load in ALL the sub-timings it is rated for, it ALWAYS fails AIDA64 (whenever Cache and/or RAM were being tested) within less than a minute! I suppose that is what I get for buying mid-tier, Dual Rank RAM - that does NOT use Samsung B-die ICs. I suppose I COULD try 3200 again, and lower the main timings from the recommended 16-16-16-36 to 16-18-18-38 as those are the timings for the next step down from the Kit I bought. I accidentally ordered 1 stick of 16 GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200 - and that stick's timings were rated at 16-18-18-38, but I then returned that to Newegg for the 2x 8 GB 16-16-16-36 3200 kit I have now... But I am happy with the ~46 GB/sec I get according to AIDA64 Cache and RAM Benchmark, as well as the low latencies (just 9.6ns to L3$ and ~48.9 to RAM!) I don't think it is worthwhile to loosen my timings so much just to gain 100-200 MHZ effective RAM speed. In fact, I was quite happy to see at 3100 effective, AIDA64 shows my RAM latency at just 48.9ns!

It looks like the i5 8400 is dropping in price. It's $202 on Newegg. The 8600k is $260. It's probably still gonna be a few months before I can purchase the parts for a new pc. In the meantime, I hope everything gets fixed for Intel owners. Selfish me still hopes the cpu prices stay low. If things get really bad for Intel I just hope that Ryzen cpu's don't suddenly skyrocket. The mid-range gpu market is brutal right now. I was hoping I could get an RX 580 8gb for a reasonable price. But, anything above a GTX 1060 3gb is getting to be outrageous.

WHY DO YOU TEST CPU PERFORMANCE IN GAMES WITH SETTINGS THAT CLEARLY PRODUCE MASSIVE GPU BOTTLENECKS HOLY FUCK
@randomdudewalkingdownthest81586 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure but some games show signs of GPU bottleneck, like AOS

The big money is in the server CPUs and there the performance lost for Intel is quite significant.

So everyone bought one of these Intel CPUs based on them having X performance. A security bug has resulted in them losing X performance which the buyer is essentially being forced to accept. Does this mean that those who bought these CPUs are in fact entitled to a partial refund now that their CPUs are less powerful than when they bought them?

Very interesting, awesome that you guys will put out videos for stuff like this as well. I speculated this could shift the power dynamic between intel and AMD but it seems to this point, it will not do that
@MrCaerbannog6 жыл бұрын
The only way it's likely to do that is if AMD takes the opportunity to really destroy Intel's public image. Unfortunately, even if the Ryzen is almost totally immune to these exploits, marketing and PR have never really been AMD's strong suit (or at least, haven't been since the Athlon 64 era).

I was playing Gears of War Ultimate Edition and decided to install the latest bios update which contains the fix, I noticed a drop by approximately 15fps in the game :(

I had a i5 6500 and it used to run bf1 at about 70fps consistently, since these patches it won't go over 50fps. Really annoying and bf1 is the only game I really care about so I bought an r7 1800x

PC? It's actually the exact same issues for consoles and mobile phones. Pretty much all modern CPUs have these vulnerabilities.
@dolbyprologicii6 жыл бұрын
re hash nope only intel has meltdown vulnerability that is a hardware bug.. spectre can be patched without performance impact
@Psydrre6 жыл бұрын
Consoles are on AMD cpus though.
@DJ_Dopamine6 жыл бұрын
It's less serious for consoles as they generally don't use Intel. But AMD CPUs are not 100% invulnerable to all of the issues recently disclosed... just Meltdown (albeit the most serious). The OG Xbox has an Intel CPU, it's too old to be affected ofc.
@DatGrunt6 жыл бұрын
Not like it matters on consoles. Their CPUs are already pretty weak.

Richard Xbox one cpu is Amd and the intel bug affects all cpus for the past 10 years dumbass. And patches against meltdown does not fully get rid of the vulnerabilities

Will you guys be doing frame tests for Monster Hunter World? Specifically PS4/Pro. I already have a pro due to performance increases in past games (thanks guys). Just wondering how stable the game is gunna be. A new beta should be coming out soon btw if you want to test.

Apparently there's a much bigger problem on older AMD CPUs that makes them unbootable after they've been patched. Great job not including the most important in your video. Not even in a short post editing scene at the end.

I had a critical update the other day which i assumed was one of these patches and all of my Asus utilities disappeared. They were on the system but couldn't open them. i rolled back.

Why is NO ONE doing ANY testing on Z68/Z77 parts?! The 2500k to the 3770k are still VERY much used by many, and that data would be invaluable. It is disgusting that nearly EVERYONE seems to be ONLY going back to the 4000 series CPU's, which happen to have PCID, which mitigates the performances loses from the Windows Update. Please test older silicon! You do it every other time, why are you only dropping down to the 4790k here? Fishy as hell.

Do you guys understand how bad this is. Let me explain. suppose 8th Gen i5 get 100fps without patch. then it get 90 fps with patch or 80 with future patch. so we lose 20% but the 9gen will be slight better and perform as always like 20-25%. so with the 9th gen cpu we might get 110 or 115 fps. it may looks like we got huge bump from 90 fps to 115 fps but we are not. this is actually good for intel in a way and we gamers are screwed unless we get a good AMD cpu or a decent 9th gen.
