Any stories on how it was developed, seen, discussed within GW in the past?

I'm with Peachy on all 101 counts. I like the unintended novelty that the screw thread on the old handle looks to be a standard type for camera equipment; if nothing else that opens up options for different grips. The only success I've had with Dry paints was following Duncan's WarhammerTV video for painting a Knight. I have two pots of Necron Compound and one of Praxetti White, all barely used and now feel rubbery and possibly dead. Alternatively, Cassandora Yellow: other than a predecessor to Contrast, what place does/did it have? My experience tells me that it's good for colour-shifting but not actually shading. NMM is good for models that will get locked in a cabinet and only seen from a specific angle. Like you say, it serves little purpose on gaming miniatures. There is debate to be had with regards to recreating metallic embroidery on cloaks, etc since they don't reflect like metal, but that's usually more restrained than the usual applications. I don't usually glue flying stems onto models if there's a choice, but they're so brittle anyway and there's the frosting effect of super glue.

100% agree on NMM. I think the technique can be great for unnatural colours on unnatural surfaces like power blades. But sometimes you do see a lot of work where its clear the NMM is no longer being used to serve the model itself, it's simply to display the talent of the painter. Which if that's what someone wants to do, fair enough, it is a technical challenge. But I agree. I don't think it should be the standard to aspire to. Often time its over used and doesn't look as good as simpler, quicker techniques.

Ace video, love it! Personally, for me, I view NMM in a similar vein as I do to being able to drive with your feet - It seems a lot of effort to learn relative to the benefit I'd derive from knowing how, seems less efficient than the technique I already use (just using metallics and a wash - NMM certainly wouldn't help me get models on the table any quicker!) and while I'm in absolute awe of people who can, I know it's just not a skill I'm going to want use in this lifetime! Don't get me wrong, all in favour of learning new things and all that, but it's just not something I would ever *want* to do! Keep on making fun stuff guys!

@Holktube2 жыл бұрын
No hate to anyone, but here's a rebuttal to the NMM argument because most people who dislike it use the "only one angle" reasoning: We paint light, not any particular material. We paint a single instant, or "animation frame," if you will. By painting NMM, you are able to align the highlights on each material that you're painting. Using metallics, on the other hand, is the more unrealistic, because while the painted highlights on your leather, or cloth, or flesh, are static, the highlights on metallic paints are effected by the ambient light in the real world. This causes dissonance and breaks the "single frame" illusion. Here's another example: taking the time to paint the highlights and shadows on a gemstone and then using gloss varnish on it. The gloss varnish defeats the purpose of painting those highlights because the real-world light reflected by the gloss varnish clashes with the light you've painted.

I've been really enjoying the videos you guys are putting out , both chat and painting. Appreciate that you cover different styles of the "basics" too, as the vast majority of vids on the site seem to go towards the complex methods (fully agree on the NMM) and neglect these. With the flying bases (which I also used to find a pain), I've started magnetizing mine recently on the top of the stand/where it connects to the model. Found it makes a huge difference in stopping them snapping off, stability, transporting models and best of all, they tend to make a satisfying "twang" when you connect them.

Great chat as always, love these videos. I was using the dry paint Tyrant Skull on some old-style Cadians as you were talking about getting rid of dry paints lol. It's less effort to prepare the paint for drybrushing than "normal" paints so I really like them, I also bought wrack white for zenithal highlighting and it has worked great with contrast paints. (I'm a fairly new painter and don't have a steady hand so edge highlighting is too hard for me)

Just add water to them if you want them to act differently, I don't like Ryza Rust as a dry brush I don't have minis that would need a dry brush of rust. Good chat, on the NMM I think it's a great skill expression and has a place for competition painting, but it has become seen as a goal. I completely understand players not liking Knights as a playable faction in 40k. I don't think I can be unconvinced that 28-32mm scale isn't infantry scale and should be the stars to the game. That said, I did start a Chaos Knight army this year because the current codex is really fun to play and the rules make it basically a high toughness, eggs all in a few baskets that 40k's current Morale system doesn't allow. So to keep things square between me and my opponent, I always ask if it is okay to bring my Knights. So far, that means losing the game, since it is so easy to think you have to list tailor to have a chance when most factions really don't. As for the Lumineth Mountain Aspect, it was the thing that brought me on board in getting a LRL army. I have been playing D&D and various fantasy for about 30 years, and most of the time the earth elemental stuff is dwarves or booger-looking rock monsters. I can't tell you how refreshing a setting having earth (well mountain) elemental aelves is. And the big helmets just reinforce how silly GW setting are. And I don't think any GW setting can escape being silly, it's too deeply coded in their essence. I do agree with the Non-Metallic Metals thing. It looks good in a 2D plane and is tricky to pull off, but it largely defeats many things concerning 3D art. Nine-out-of-ten times, I vastly prefer the look of a simple metal paint over NNM.

Great video! I completely agree that the scale of the Imperial knights compared to a regular game of 40K just feels off. They are simply too large and there are too few of them, the same goes for primarchs. Thematically they scream for larger games than 2000 points. I still love the models and I have a Knight army, but I have them mostly as a hobby project that gets some game time, if I play a truly massive game with some infantry as ally.

I've been practicing NMM just so I can show that I can do it and crap on it too. I think it just looks so messy. You got tiny boxes on your model's head or weird stripes on the sword, it's ugly and I don't think light sources hit objects like that. Heck, space marine armor is probably similarly painted like a tank would be. The light is flat on that matt green/yellow paint job. Also, I prefer the clear flight stands. I hate when people glue the tip toe to a rock or something. They're suppose to be flying, not hopping awkwardly off a rock. It looks so unnatural. I saw someone use the parchment from celestine to make their seraphines fly, and it looks like the parchment is dragging across the ground, which is dangerous if you're flying.

Would love an army painting challenge between you all. Maybe one video a month, with the progress of each of your armies.

Geoff, on the Rough Riders for you GSC. Just make 'em anyway, rule of cool first and always. That's the best part of the hobby, it's your hobby! Is there anything in the codex about Space Marine Chapter Masters riding into battle in top of a Dragon?? Nope! But does my homebrew Chapter Master do it anyway? Hell yeah! (Or at least as a model he does, once I've finished him although he can't in game of course). Rule of Cool! I'm sure there are enough cool people who would play you fuelding GSC Rough Riders.

@@thepaintingphase well that's the other great part of the hobby. We all are inspired by other people's stuff, it's a wonderful circle. Or as my boss calls it "S.W.I.P.E" (Steal With Integrity. Practically Everything)

Wish Games Workshop would do more with genestealer cultists, sometimes feel like an after thought it seems. Though I do love the kitbashing and now have jackals running in on the cold ones, also might have ended up with necromunda bodies on the metamorphs. Great way to get to use all the cool models without having to start a new army, hehe. The cultist kill teams are fun, though I don’t win much with them I can always jump in with my nids that always do if I feel like a change.
