Thanks Gruff, I agree that this is absolutely worth it. I used to be a chef and was regularly buying full pig or lamb. I then butchered everything myself and freeze it. It was taken some time but I wanted to keep my butchering qualification/skills up to speed. Even I didn't raise the animals myself I was buying the meat from a trusted butchers and the quality of meat was unbelievable. When it comes to Xmas and everyone running around trying to get buy some meat from the supermarkets, you just open up a freezer and pick up a perfect rack of lamb 😂. Raising the animals yourself adds even more benefits as you know that qualify feed will payback with nutrition. I completely agree that most sausages and mince in the supermarkets supermarkets are made from the lowest quality trimmings.

Mince meat is getting worse in quality and higher in price in supermarkets.

Some years ago I read a book "Pigs in Clover" by Simon Dawson and watched Ben Fogle visiting the family. The book is very good, I read it twice.

Great honest video. Perhaps you should feed the pigs a little less to reduce the fat levels. Looked like some heart stopping bacon on the frying pan.

Fantastic roundup of the whole process Gruff. I’m gearing up to get my own pigs soon. Can I ask, Which feed did you use, and did you buy it as needed or as a bulk load ?

Thank you ☺️ I was buying around 3-5 bags a time. I was buying concentrate from either Wynnestay or Lloyd animal feeds. Roll barley from cowindale or HafodNeddyn.

Hi gweyn, glad to see you did the pig story right through to the end, I was intrigued as to how they was going. I saw you at the honey show and was going to have the crack with you and ask about the pigs but didn't get chance to chat. I was the guy who came up to you at the beginning about to chat but you said you just had to shoot off to sort a pre order out. Totally understand how busy you were so left you too it lol. Well anyway enjoy the pork I bet its delicious. 🥩🥩🍖🍖

Back in the day, we used to have the trotters and heads for soup . And the bacon bones used to be thrown in for stock. And the offal, for some reason you don't see much about now, but all in it'll be a great job for a family.

I think the main pleasure is to have your own home bred pork, knowing exactly what has gone into them, and also what has not. The financial aspect is of course also of importance and if, like you, you already have more or less everything needed aside from the feed, then there is of course money to be saved.

I would love to do this given the space. Did you worry about potential vet bills at all? It doesn't take much vet'ing to run up a huge bill and wipe out the savings. Can't beat your own meat though. Best we've managed so far, outside honey of course.. Is our own eggs from our chickens. Hope we can do pigs one day too.
@gwenyngruffydd

That’s a great choice. The vet can wipe any saving made and even make it a loss. A bit of luck is needed like all aspects of farming

Despite you increasing the size of their enclosure it appears from the video that they still have very little room and it's nothing like a natural environment. This perception on my behalf may be wrong so please correct me if this is the case. I accept your Tamworth's may have a better life than the majority of pigs but that doesn't make it right. As you I've said, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, That’s a fair point. I had these pigs in the winter. The choice was leaving them outside in a cold wet boggy field in the wettest winter we have had. Or in a warm dry straw bedded shed. If it was the summer they would have been outdoors 100%. In wales we bring our stock in for the winter due to the weather and field conditions

maybe google how many square feet each pig , are allowed in a commercial piggery, and you might see how well these porkers were looked after by a kind and caring farmer. then you may reconsider your supermarket bacon and rashers

Thank you all for such a quick response to my query about these pigs environment. I totally accept your views especially about buying bacon from a supermarket and what space is legally permitted. These Tamworth's certainly appear to be in good condition.
