Now that we have RAM modules capable of up to 4266MHz, we need to find out... does high speed RAM ACTUALLY make a difference?

@@bamboo9666 Yes, try to get 3000 or 3200Mhz at least, if you can. If you want more, go for 3600Mhz, it's the max optimized for ryzen 3000, don't go forward. If you are going with Intel, well, you are stuck with 2666Mhz, unless you use a z370 or z390 motherboard.

LOL, you poor young people. I remember buying 16 MEGS (not gigs) for my Amiga 500 back in the day and it cost $800 just for the RAM, and another $350 for the board to plug it into. You folks today have no idea how good you've really got it. And that was when the Minimum wage was $2.85 an hour, not when it was $7.25 an hour. And that's not accounting for inflation. In today's dollars, that 16 megs would've cost around $1,500. Enjoy your "fucking expensive" RAM! ;)

Basically what the graphs show is that overclocking your memory can improve FPS to a significant level for gaming (on one graph it was a jump from 23 average FPS from 2133 speed to 3600 on an i7-7700k), but it can hurt performance in other areas such encoding whether it be unzipping a file, or computing a hash for an encryption algorithm. However, as Linus said, if you're not willing to suffer the pain of figuring out the right frequency to overclock at it's not worth it.

It's not a correct summary though. There are pretty considerable performance boosts when going from 2133 to 2666 or 3200 MHz, particularly on AMD CPUs.
@XGamezOnlyX
@XGamezOnlyX 7 жыл бұрын
Look at the benchmarks. Games like Rise of the Tom Raider has a FPS increase of 12 when going from 2133 to 3200 MHz on AMD and and increase of 22 on Intel. That's a meaningful difference. To say RAM speed doesn't matter is disingenuous, it's not as simple as that. Hence, watch the video.

@@xXJeReMiAhXx99 you must have a potatoe as a computer if you think like that! One thing I have learned building PC's since the 90s, is that upgradability, modularity and construction are the most important. No point in building a comp that would be already 4 years old, get relatively new components, a high end Mobo a good example, can always add new stuff.

Speed matters, but it is dependant on CAS latency. 3200mhz DDR4 CAS-14 is pretty much the best thing commercially available right now. As speed increases, typically CAS latency increases as well, so much so that something like 4266mhz DDR4 CAS-19 is actually SLOWER than 3200 CAS-14 memory. You can do the math: [L/(0.5*S)]*1000=E L= Latency (CAS), S= Speed (in Mhz), E= Effective Rating (lower E value = better) So for 3200mhz CAS-14 ram the equation would be: [14/(0.5*3200)]*1000=8.750 For 4266mhz CAS-19 it's: [19/(0.5*4266)*1000=8.907 If you could get 4266mhz ram with a CAS latency of 18 THEN it would be slightly faster than 3200mhz CAS-14 RAM... unfortunately it doesn't exist (or is not actually available for purchase).

Me: a Ai and Robotics Student Also me: All he keeps yammering on about is price vs performance TL;DR: 3200 Mhz RAM is the sweet spot as there is always a drop off point in performance he says it depends on budget but ultimately if you're a gamer you'll want to get as close to 3200 Mhz as your budget provides.
@W0lfbaneShikaisc00l
@W0lfbaneShikaisc00l 4 жыл бұрын
@Bob Bobbertson Well, in theory all you would need to improve your current system would be more RAM and a somewhat decent CPU... I'm not using the latest and greatest CPU as it's horrendously expensive (I'll stick with 3.4Ghz for now thank you very much) what annoys me is people boast about their rigs as if they're somewhat better than person x: chances are that person you're comparing yourself to doesn't even game at your resolution. Plus most PC builds kinda all look the same performance wise until I see a game that need 64GB of RAM I don't think I'll upgrade.
@W0lfbaneShikaisc00l
@W0lfbaneShikaisc00l 4 жыл бұрын
@Bob Bobbertson Yeah it's ironic most gamers are still using i5s I'm using an i7 but the problem with upgrading my CPU is if I have to make that upgrade it would be super expensive: the motherboard would have to get replaced and I'd be looking to replace my cooling fans as well... this whole "building the perfect rig thing" just spells buying more for little return. I thought about the 1080ti before going for my rtx card (2060 super) it was built for the purpose of 4k: but i can't afford to buy a 4k TV yet, I spent way too much on small components i felt i would had just been better off buying a new rig.

I've always wanted to see a latency vs mhz comparison. In the end,high performance RAM is little more than increased ability to handle data throughput with greater efficiency and lower temps. What happens when you keep 4k ram at 2666, and start dropping latency clocks? After all, if you want a TRUE speed boost, latency is where it's at, not sheer throughput.

A few tips for over clocking,.. 1) minimize the number of slots per channel. If your system has two slots per channel, populate only one, using the furthermost slot 2) use the smallest memory stick you can. Being unbuffered, the more memory on a stick, the higher the loading and less chance of tolerating higher speeds.

OK I guess in games the resolution and detail was a bit lower. But it isn't the crazy improvement I'd think 1,000 times better specs would bring.
