2016 TRD off road 6MT here (still stock gearing). I had a 3200 lb pop up camper and apart from squatting a bit, the truck still accelerated up hill. I've towed campers, boats, towed a 4 door jeep out of the mountains, pulled a civic and 1500 ram out of the snow, loaded the bed with dirt, and many other truck things. I absolutely love this truck, but my problem has always been that reverse is too fast for maneuvering a trailer very easily. Maybe re gearing to the 4.88 will help? I don't plan on running bigger tires or anything and probably won't lift it more than an inch or two.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the regear would affect reverse, but I would assume it could do something for it. I haven't noticed a difference in reverse on mine even though it's an auto. But that would be a better gearing ratio if you don't go with larger tires.

Very nice! I tow a 23'8" camper that weighs about 4700ish when all the tanks are full. I won't disclose the tongue weight but just know it's more than I'm supposed to have. I've actually yet to tow it with stock size tires. I had 265/75R16 falken wildpeaks on it, but went back to stock height for this next set. I had a noticeable decrease in fuel mileage unladen with the 1" taller tires and I feel the larger size hindered towing performance on a truck already known for being moderately underwhelming as a tow vehicle. That being said if you stay within proper tongue weight ranges and are pulling something with a lower profile like a boat or small dump trailer it will do just fine without a regear. I tow a 14' Jon boat all summer with mine, albeit I'm in the 1,000 lb range with it, and it is as if it's not even there. I do believe that it's happy place towing wise is basically what you plan to tow with it.

Well if you watched the video. The lift and tires are not the reason I regeard it. The stock Tacoma with the automatic transmission has the same gearing as the 2nd gen tacoma with the 5 speed auto. But.. 4inlift and currently have 34s
@techsocial6262 жыл бұрын
Overall, I think the 5.29 regear with oversized tires does improve the initial acceleration and allows the truck to utilize 5th and 6th gear. However, it still will produce the same stock characteristics of downshifting into 4th and even screaming into 3rd to maintain 60mph with a modest weighted trailer (2500 lbs from my experience). MPG’s might be slightly better during towing compared to stock but nothing to rave about either. The regear mostly benefits oversized tires IMO.

I’ve found it to be very helpful especially on the highway and actually uses 6th which is awesome! No hunting from my Tacoma... But it's a Manual 😁. Reverse up a hill is a different story though as it has a tall reverse ⚙ gear. I mitigated the issue by adding 2WD LO and no longer have any issues.

I tow a 24 ft sea ray with my 2019 Sport a few times a year over central pa mountains. Tacoma does it well. Def wouldn’t do anything heavier. I’m not regeared and it’s similar to your experience.

would you say, as a rule of thumb, to stay at least 1,000 pounds away from the max towing capacity of a vehicle?
@BrosFOURRSpeed4 жыл бұрын
That's probably good just to feel comfortable with it, you could go to the max towing for shorter trips, but I wouldn't go crazy heavy for long distances.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed no, it has nothing to do with the throttle. The Shift Sense Pro use the S mode on the automatic gearbox to run a custom program that change the shifting points of the gearbox. Sounds very interesting.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
@@lorenzoronpedrique2952 Hmm, interesting, I'll take a look and see. My regear has definitely helped with that so not sure how that would help with the stock gears.
@canalesivany4 жыл бұрын
Be honest you think regear was a big improvement?
@BrosFOURRSpeed4 жыл бұрын
Yes I do, I love how it doesn't hunt for gears and it makes it smoother to drive. Even though it'll go from 6th to 5th, that feels normal compared to 5th to 4th, it was just getting so high in the rpm range. It didn't help with mpg much, but I did the larger gears for bigger tires, so once I upgrade my tires maybe there will be a different change with that, but so far I'm happy with it!

So bottom line, it seems like you should only really tow with a 3rd gen tacoma in a pinch, unless you like the annoying noises of a struggling motor and handing out fat stacks of cash to gas stations?
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
It can tow fine with the right weight lol, I wouldn't want to tow this boat on the highway often or on long trips, but around town it's fine. It's not meant for towing a lot, but can be used when you need it.
@JasonWh4 жыл бұрын
That drone is brutal... can't hear you well at all. Consider pulling that Hz out of the video in post. Use the 'performance' button when towing per the manual. If you shift to the performance map by hitting that ECT power button you'll be set. I've got a 2020 TRD Pro and it helps me a great deal keeping it from shifting. Also, look at a Pedal Commander. that helped much more than I thought.
@BrosFOURRSpeed4 жыл бұрын
It's louder than my previous exhaust, but not much drone to be honest. What is Hz?....also I haven't found the ECT button to do anything, I've seen it hold a shift longer, but that's about it. I also do have the pedal commander already in this video.

@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
The intake does make it much louder under hard acceleration for sure lol...the exhaust setup I have is much louder than my previous one and that ads to the drone, plus the truck is in very high rpm's with the weight of the boat!
