@@nickbruderly6414 Yes, I got some other work done at the same time, I want to say the gear job cost around 3K? It was the best and most cost effective performance upgrade ive ever done in a vehicle. Better than a SC, better than spending the same amount on air intake and headers and exhaust. A lot of the other (all) mods are only noticeable improvements at high RPM’s. Gears improve every single drive, every single day. AND massively improves high end performance too. Towing is a breeze now. My gut tells me all other components are under less stress and id expect the rest of the drive train to last longer. Gears are my first go-to mod from now on. (Especially the transmission. CONSTANT gear hunting on the highway CANNOT be good for the tranny.)

Great channel, Brotha. I've been running 5.29 with 33s on my 2020 Pro for years, and it is far & away the most pleasurable ride I've ever owned. Sport mode (toggle shifting) is the only way I've shifted the truck from Day One. So fun. Keep up the great video content!

My Tacoma is almost 3 years old too but with only 9k miles. I got pre-assembled front and rear 529 axles from ECGS. I also had them install an ARB air locker in my front axle. They ship you ready to go diff's and you just swap them out. I love my 529's!!! The truck tows much better everywhere, city and highway. The truck just feels like it drives better by increasing rpm's across all 6 gears, I have an auto btw. The truck is just more responsive, everywhere you drive it. If you are thinking about it but not sure, just do it! And go with the 529's, especially if you have added weight and/or taller tires. I have about 6 months on my new gears and have never looked back! IMHO, it should be one of your first mods to your Tacoma.

I'm in a stock 2018 TRD off road, when driving in a place with a lot of hills I just run with the ECT on even with no trailer. ECT will lockout 6th gear which helps with gear hunting a lot. Not only are the shift points higher but since the truck will be cruising in 5th gear your rpms are already a bit higher and the truck is ready to take on the next hill possibly without shifting into 4th.
@BrosFOURRSpeed

I've been in a few manual 3rd gen Tacomas so far and honestly don't like them! I'm a big manual person and have a manual R8, but in the Tacoma, it's just not the same! It's much slower and I feel like the truck can't get up to speed and you really have to punch it! First gear seems to only go like 15/20mph if that, but I'm glad Toyota still offers that! I have a 2016 Tacoma with 33 inch tires, 2 1/2 lift, camper shell and also adding a whole front bumper. I already purchased my 5.29s and will be installed in a couple months. What’s happening with me is that when I talk to people (mostly people outside of the Tacoma world) about regearing, they say I shouldn’t do it at all, or if anything 4.88. It seems like they say the exact opposite of what I hear from nitro gear , or people with tacos. They tell me I’ll waste more gas, it will be horrible on the freeway, it’s only for rock crawlers and it’ll revv to high. I’m wondering why there’s such a huge controversy. Maybe because they don’t know how bad the stock gear is ?
@BrosFOURRSpeed

Sounds like the people who don't own a Tacoma don't know what it's like lol, I have heard mixed reviews on them, but if you don't own one, you can't really say good or bad. Honestly after putting probably 3k miles on this now, I love it. It drives so much better, not necessarily in the city, although it doesn't shift as much which is nice. But the highway is completely different, it used 6th gear! It'll stay in 5th/6th now instead of 4th/5th, and the rpm's barely jump over 3k, depending on the hill it will, but it doesn't scream over 4k like it use to. I have seem a slight increase in mpg, but nothing crazy. I would do it again just for the highway driving for sure. I went with the 5.29 for larger tires at some point, and some of the weight I have, no issues so far! I can't see a big difference off the pavement, but on road oh yeah!

@@heyitstoast8693 regearing is a really touchy subject because a lot of people do not know what they are talking about within the realm... (neither do I)... but basically, mechanical engineers that have a degree and years of experience that get paid 300k a year complete math equations write reports develop and review into a conference with others before even thinking about changing a part. this is before and they finetune all of the individual gears within the vehicle to bring the most profit to the company... if the mass majority of people who buy tacomas never off road and never use it for towing, nor get a lift kit, add weight or anything, then they will only accommodate what makes them the most money. All in all, regearing is one of the most mathematically controversial parts in vehicles and there are people online who have their own little math equations to find you the right gears. The best way in my opinion to find the best gear is to find proof that Mpg AND rpm went up after regearing, the reason is that if mpg and rpm goes up, then the ratio in which the gear was installed was all around infact better. the controversy after that is to determine whether you want more torque or MPG but evidence shows that Tacomas factory gears being 3.91 and 4.3 are definitely not good compared to this nitro 5.29 gear .

Hey guys, Love the channel! 2018 Taco: I also had the shifting "thing" on the highway. I took a different route. I used OV Tuners to tune the engine and transmission. I'd love to compare MPG notes if you are willing to share. I'm sure the re-gearing is better especially for larger tires. My tires are slightly above stock (31's). The tune made a pretty good difference in power and a huge difference in the shifting and MPG. I'm hitting 21-22 MPG @ 60 MPH originally that would have been about 18 -19 MPG. Hitting 17-18 @ 75 MPH; 15-16 originally.

Good vid! Quick question, I do have a bit of the gear hunting issue, but the main problem in my 2019 TRD Sport is it jerking when accelerating/decelerating. I’m really not sure what causes this, I’ve gotten OVTune and also recently got the latest TSB and my truck still jerks like crazy. Any ideas?

The only jerkiness I feel is coming from almost a stop and giving it gas, sometimes it think's I gave it more than I did and you can feel it, but that's not too often. I'm not really sure what would cause that to be honest, I have the regear and the pedal commander and it's pretty smooth now.

The 3rd gen Tacoma: when family sedan engines and diesel truck gearing combine. Seriously, these trucks should have come with 4.875 final drive as standard, or at the very least a factory option. If they gave the truck an 8 speed auto, that would give it the "gear" its "looking for". It could use a ratio in between 4th and 5th, and the 8 speed fills in that slot. The only reason it gets a 3.91 ratio stock is the pressure from the EPA.

Here's my take that I wish someone would've told me about this mod: If you're going to get this mod with the intention to tow better, probably not worth it. I tow a modest 2500 lbs travel trailer at 60 mph. I will say it does accelerate much better than the stock 3.71, and it does utilize 5th and 6th gear. But it will, more often than not, downshift into 4th and even scream into 3rd at 5500 rpm depending on the incline. This is still characteristic of having the stock differential overall to me. MPG's were really not anything substantially better either, I don't think I can say I even get better MPG's towing now than before. Overall, the 3rd gen Taco just isn't tuned the same way as it's predecessors because of government EPAs. It's not Toyota's fault. And I would still say I'd buy a Tacoma over any other midsize pickup out there. I just wouldn't have gotten this particular mod done personally.

To be fair, regear companies never state it’ll help with towing! That shouldn’t be an expectation. And yea, it doesn’t help much with towing, I made a whole video on that! I haven't had to do that at all!! I did that on my last tacoma with a 6'' lift, but even with my 3.5'' up front and 3'' in the rear, I don't have any vibrations. If it goes away when you put the truck into 4wd then you know that the needle bearing is the problem. Double check on lug nuts that they are tight, maybe it's the drive shaft (some kits come with the carrier bearing drop kit)....also consider the differential drop kit ($40), hope this helps!

Aren't you supposed to break the gears in before you start dogging it?
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, there's a 20 minute drive to do, then let them cool and you should be good after that. I'm at about 40p miles on them in this video, but I drove like grandma until this part of the video.

Nitro says 500mile break in to keep the warranty
@toddschwarz8256
@toddschwarz8256 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, he is not breaking the gears in correct. It’s 500 miles of breaking the vehicle in and not hammering on the gas. The 20 minute cool period is incorrect. ECGS says no more than 50 miles and let the vehicle cool for 30 minutes until you reach 500. Doing a single break in of 15-20 miles is not enough.
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
@@toddschwarz8256 Like I said I'm at around 400 miles and doing a slight acceleration at this time is ok. Nitros instructions say a 20 minute drive for an initial break in, and then the first 500 before you can tow or anything like that.

Wish I could do it myself. Around here, it's hard to find a good place to do a gear swap. From what I hear it's a hit or miss, also depends on who works on it. Either way it's going to be a pretty penny for me.

I have a 2019 and have never had the problem with the transmission searching for gears really. My truck gets into 6th gear all the time on the highway. My truck is completely stock though.
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
Even with my stock truck, I never got into 6th. When you see "D" on the dash, doesn't always mean you are using 6th. You could have no problems like you said though and that's cool. When you are cruising in what you think is 6th gear, put in into manual mode and see if it goes to 5th or 4th just to double check!

Hmm, I've seen people, even the Nitro guys doing 4.88's with everything stock. I'm sure 5.29's can be done, but check out there channel for some more info on that because I know they were going to do the 4.88's, not sure if they talked about that yet!

I don't think they have fixed it for the 2021 model either. It's not crazy bad, but they give it a bad reputation because everyone thinks it's an engine problem, but they just didn't give 6th gear enough to be utilized efficiently. Even with that, it's been the best truck!

Worst Transmission Cal I've ever experienced. I have 265x16 tires on my 2021 Tacoma and it shifts in and out of 5th/6th ever 30 seconds doing 75mph on highway. I just put the truck in 5th gear and it's perfect. 14 MPG. Horrible
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
Yea on the highway it's not the best and it tool me a while to notice that, but with 34's and the 5.29's I'm averaging around 15.5/16...but it stays in 6th on the highway now and is so much soother.
