My Tacoma is almost 3 years old too but with only 9k miles. I got pre-assembled front and rear 529 axles from ECGS. I also had them install an ARB air locker in my front axle. They ship you ready to go diff's and you just swap them out. I love my 529's!!! The truck tows much better everywhere, city and highway. The truck just feels like it drives better by increasing rpm's across all 6 gears, I have an auto btw. The truck is just more responsive, everywhere you drive it. If you are thinking about it but not sure, just do it! And go with the 529's, especially if you have added weight and/or taller tires. I'm in a stock 2018 TRD off road, when driving in a place with a lot of hills I just run with the ECT on even with no trailer. ECT will lockout 6th gear which helps with gear hunting a lot. Not only are the shift points higher but since the truck will be cruising in 5th gear your rpms are already a bit higher and the truck is ready to take on the next hill possibly without shifting into 4th.

I have a 2016 Tacoma with 33 inch tires, 2 1/2 lift, camper shell and also adding a whole front bumper. I already purchased my 5.29s and will be installed in a couple months. What’s happening with me is that when I talk to people (mostly people outside of the Tacoma world) about regearing, they say I shouldn’t do it at all, or if anything 4.88. It seems like they say the exact opposite of what I hear from nitro gear , or people with tacos. They tell me I’ll waste more gas, it will be horrible on the freeway, it’s only for rock crawlers and it’ll revv to high. I’m wondering why there’s such a huge controversy. Maybe because they don’t know how bad the stock gear is ?
@BrosFOURRSpeed4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the people who don't own a Tacoma don't know what it's like lol, I have heard mixed reviews on them, but if you don't own one, you can't really say good or bad. Honestly after putting probably 3k miles on this now, I love it. It drives so much better, not necessarily in the city, although it doesn't shift as much which is nice. But the highway is completely different, it used 6th gear! It'll stay in 5th/6th now instead of 4th/5th, and the rpm's barely jump over 3k, depending on the hill it will, but it doesn't scream over 4k like it use to. I have seem a slight increase in mpg, but nothing crazy. I would do it again just for the highway driving for sure. I went with the 5.29 for larger tires at some point, and some of the weight I have, no issues so far! I can't see a big difference off the pavement, but on road oh yeah!

@@heyitstoast8693 regearing is a really touchy subject because a lot of people do not know what they are talking about within the realm... (neither do I)... but basically, mechanical engineers that have a degree and years of experience that get paid 300k a year complete math equations write reports develop and review into a conference with others before even thinking about changing a part. this is before and they finetune all of the individual gears within the vehicle to bring the most profit to the company... if the mass majority of people who buy tacomas never off road and never use it for towing, nor get a lift kit, add weight or anything, then they will only accommodate what makes them the most money. All in all, regearing is one of the most mathematically controversial parts in vehicles and there are people online who have their own little math equations to find you the right gears. The best way in my opinion to find the best gear is to find proof that Mpg AND rpm went up after regearing, the reason is that if mpg and rpm goes up, then the ratio in which the gear was installed was all around infact better. the controversy after that is to determine whether you want more torque or MPG but evidence shows that Tacomas factory gears being 3.91 and 4.3 are definitely not good compared to this nitro 5.29 gear .

I actually don't have much drone with this system, it is loud for sure, but not bad even on the highway! That is true, the engines in the 3rd gens are great, it's the gearing that needs to be improved to make it more efficient! I probably watched that same video before doing this!

@BrosFourrSpeed is there a fix for the max 83 mph yet? I re-geared w/ 5.29 as well, love the difference. I rarely would drive faster than 83, but now I can't even if I wanted. They say you can drop to 5th and run 90. The computer thinks that since you're running 83 in 6th @ 2700 rpms you're actually going 104 and it governs the throttle.

The 3rd gen Tacoma: when family sedan engines and diesel truck gearing combine. Seriously, these trucks should have come with 4.875 final drive as standard, or at the very least a factory option. If they gave the truck an 8 speed auto, that would give it the "gear" its "looking for". It could use a ratio in between 4th and 5th, and the 8 speed fills in that slot. The only reason it gets a 3.91 ratio stock is the pressure from the EPA.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
At least they put the better gearing ratio in the manuals! But I agree on the auto's they should have offered better gearing or at least tuned the transmission properly instead of just adding a 6th gear that's pointless. But I will say after doing this regear, even though I had to pay for this, it's made the truck drive so much smoother!!

Here's my take that I wish someone would've told me about this mod: If you're going to get this mod with the intention to tow better, probably not worth it. I tow a modest 2500 lbs travel trailer at 60 mph. I will say it does accelerate much better than the stock 3.71, and it does utilize 5th and 6th gear. But it will, more often than not, downshift into 4th and even scream into 3rd at 5500 rpm depending on the incline. This is still characteristic of having the stock differential overall to me. MPG's were really not anything substantially better either, I don't think I can say I even get better MPG's towing now than before. Overall, the 3rd gen Taco just isn't tuned the same way as it's predecessors because of government EPAs. It's not Toyota's fault. And I would still say I'd buy a Tacoma over any other midsize pickup out there. I just wouldn't have gotten this particular mod done personally.
@BrosFOURRSpeed2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, regear companies never state it’ll help with towing! That shouldn’t be an expectation. And yea, it doesn’t help much with towing, I made a whole video on that!
