Does Roundup (Glyphosate) Kill Grass Permanently?

Most lawn owners apply Round Up or some other product the uses glyphosate as it's active ingredient to kill grass but does it actually kill the grass off permanently or will grass regrow after application?
In this video I explain why glyphosate should kill a lawn off for good in one single application and why it usually requires multiple rounds over the course of a month or two to get a lasting kill.
Below are a few other videos I have produced on killing lawn spaces off better and/or more efficiently.

Glyphosate is super interesting. Most people think of it as liquid death for plants (or even for people 🙃). But not many people know it's actually and growth regulator. Used at the proper rate it can be a growth regulator for many types of grasses. There are also certain species of plants and trees that it stimulates growth at low application rate. It's really just the high application rate that makes it toxic, and the reason it really needs active growth for it to be effective.

It's hard Jon, I had originally hoped to be reseeding that area in late Jan but we got cooler than normal from late December through late Jan and super wet. It's hard to watch the kids playing on the neighbors grass as a lawn guy but if I want the area to be as close to perfect as possible later this year then I gotta be as patient as possible.

I’ve been trying to get rid of grass in our gravel driveway , it seems like it just sucks the gravel into the ground . I’m in Michigan so by the time the grass gets growing , I’d spray and the weeds and grass would die back and you could see where the drive way was. By fall time it would be coming back but it slows down and then we get snow so I wouldn’t treat it . Repeat this a few years and it always comes back better the next year and now the grass has taken over my driveway . This makes so much sense now . I couldn’t figure out why I thought I was killing the grass there yet it is now better grass than my yard !

Thank you for creating this video! I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and plan to rip and replace my 40 year old KY31 tall fescue with a newer variety, I’m tired of those clumps! The lawn is very healthy thanks to all the KZbin lawn care content creators such as yourself, I’ve been following for five years. I’m especially glad you created this video, as I was wondering if a one time application would work on that root system, which I imagine is fairly deep and dense with all the deep water irrigation the past 10+ years, plus five years of consistent fertilization including bio-stems 😱 I can see that’s its not going to be a one and done situation, will be sure to get some rubber boots!

Be prepared for two applications, maybe 3. Tall fescue is pretty easy to wipeout though and generally doesn't regenerate like Mr. Mechanic's Kikuyu lawn he's spraying.

I use the field king battery sprayer most of the time...but I swapped the battery head out for a pump a while back because the battery started giving me trouble. I would buy it again though, I think it is a good value and most people have no problems with the batteries. I think I just git unlucky. Here's the link amzn.to/3XIf4D6

I live in Yakima WA. I'm doing a lawn reno this spring but want to kill off my KBG ASAP. I'm going to use Agfabric to help with germination once I plant seed. My questions is, can I use it to also help warm up the soil so my grass can uptake Glyphosate, maybe beginning of March? I want to get a jump start on the project.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
Hey Corey, I'm working on a summary of how I killed off my project lawn last year in March and regrew it. I made roughly 5-6 videos throughout the year on the process but never made the "everything" video. I'll put that high on my list to get out before early March...but, I would suggest doing what I did. The Agrfabic looks to me like a frost blanket in different weights. Probably great for when the seed goes down but won't warm the soil up enough in Feb. Go online to Amazon and buy this stuff in whatever size you need www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0S4GHB/?turfmechanicyt-20, don't buy the cheap stuff used for general use (painting mat splatter mats), it won't warm things up well. Greenhouse plastic is the key. Water your lawn as best as you can deeply and then cover the entire area with the greenhouse plastic. Don't skimp on stakes; you need to stake the plastic down very well to trap heat under it and to make it durable enough to stand up to wind. Leave the area covered for as long as possible and then apply your glyphosate as early in March as possible assuming you have at least two nights in a row where temps won't drop below 40 degrees. If this happens to occur on March 15 then plan on covering the area back up with plastic after applying. Wait for about 3-4 days and then scalp everything down to the dirt, remove debris, water deeply and cover back up with plastic until April 1. At that point apply a second round if anything is coming back up and plan on seeding about a week later. Good luck and make sure to see my video on this topic when I can get it out. I have probably about 15 hours of footage to condense down to a 12 min video!

@@TurfMechanic Sorry, one more question. What temp should the soil be before I attempt to kill the grass or just follow you advise on air temp?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
@@PNWlawnguy1973 your grass will be fully growing and green when soil temp gets high enough. By mid March you are having 12 hour days so light isn't a problem either. Just time the herbicide app around the warmest weather of the week in mid March when time comes. I recorded soil temps close to 90 last year in Feb when I did this to my yard in Klamath Falls Oregon so just monitor it. Your gut will tell you.

I have some paver next to a small grass lawn. I used glyphosate to kill weeds and grass in between the pavers, but the edge of the lawn closest to the pavers seems to be dying. What can I do?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 ай бұрын
No guarantee this will work but you can take a straight edge shovel and sever the roots between the lawn and the pavers. You might have rhizomes underground translocating the herbicide from the pavers to the surrounding grass. If you over sprayed then you'll probably just have fix it in a couple weeks unfortunately.

Is glyphosate safe to use with appropriate PPE? So many rumors it’s been shown to increase risk for cancer
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
I don't say this often enough on camera but I really don't like using any chems at all and would prefer taking the safest route even if it's not as effective...but in the case of starting over (which is essentially what I'm doing on this new property) I've decided to make an exception this year. I've also found that IMO most errors and safety issues with glyphosate and other chems has to do with preparing the tank, handling the bottle, and cleaning up afterwards. So long as you spray on a windless day and don't rush it dangerous mistakes are harder to happen while actually spraying. As for the risks there is a lot of bad press over glyphosate but I'm not personally convinced it's any better or worse than other common chems used in lawns. In this video I didn't put on my rubber boots, probably should have though and I was using gloves that I changed a few times. I personally need to be more complete with PPE every time I spray.

It’s not a rumor. Monsanto has paid out 11 billion in lawsuits. It’s illegal to use in many counties and is very bad to have in your yard or water table. So many other options out there.

@@macjaxjax2604 There is always other options...until they get lawsuits. This chemical was perfectly fine until someone said it wasn't. Im sure nearly all chemicals aren't good so saying there are other options is true however I highly doubt it means they are safer. Everything is safe until someone says it isn't.

They are actually winning many of their lawsuits lately. It hasn't been proven to cause cancer. The final word is " it may cause cancer". It's actually Bayer that owns it and yes there is a bunch of money piled up for people to try and collect via a lawsuit. @@macjaxjax2604
