At this point, its getting hard to tell if Oda doesnt give certain characters a family name. I mean, it's already quite odd that of the strawhats, Nami, Brook, Usopp and Jinbe(although Jinbe is very new), do not have a family name. Franky ofcourse is originally Cutty Flam, and Sanji was revealed to be a Vinsmoke. Nami and Usopp could kinda be explained away because they were very young before their parents left their lives, either through death or otherwise(and besides, odds are that Usopp's family name would be given when Yasopp and Usopp meet again, so other reason why not). But Nami grew up in a village where Bell-mere was known quite well, and you'd also expect that Nami would wear that family name with pride. Then you have Brook, who very oddly isnt named, even though he comes from the time of Rocks(to be fair, he doesnt really speak of the pirate age prior to Roger, maybe because he thinks its common knowledge). I mean, considering Roronoa has been given to Zoro, but no one being released with that name either. The chance exists that a Shimosuki would be revealed(Ryuma's relatives) with a distant aunt who married a Roronoa.

After 20 years of one piece, it is hard not to get excited about pretty much every little amount of data that we obtain from Oda, but sometimes I wonder if this might be accumulating for some over expectations about topics as the void century. I say this because I started thinking of possible explanations to what could have happened during the void century, and although whenever we find out I'm sure it will be amazing, I start to believe that this moment when it all comes together will no longer be as exciting as many other moments that we have gotten till today... I mean, I don't underestimate Oda's capacity to blow us away, I just wonder if the void century and its misteries will live up to the expectations that have been created for the past 20+ years.

Many people may have missed it since it wasnt included in the regular serialization, but an extra volume released alongside Film: Red revealed that Shanks was discovered by Roger's crew inside a treasure chest at God Valley after the battle. Really indicates one of two main possibilities: Hes the son of Rocks, or he's the kid of a likely now dead Celestial Dragon. Pretty crazy, the two most likely options are either that he has the will of D, or hes a world noble. I personally think the world noble theory makes more sense, given the context of the Gorosei even being willing to give Shanks the time of day. Also, it would be FAR more interesting of a story beat to have Shanks be related to the world nobles. In the hat-line of succession, it seems way more compelling for a celestial dragon to be thrown in the mix rather than just a continuous line of Ds. Frankly the only real support I've seen people bring up for Shanks being Rocks's kid is that some depictions show Rocks with red hair, but I dont think any of those colorings are canon. And yeah I guess the idea of Roger raising his arch rival's kid on his own crew would be interesting, but Shanks being a D just doesnt seem like it would take the story in any new direction.

Matt, did you notice that Xebec is both Rock's name and the name of the company that produced Shaman King anime? THE Shaman King that was originally made by an artist Oda worked closely with under Nobuhiro Watsuki? Weird connection, in Oda's case probably means a hidden inspiration.
