Yeah some Spanky. It's just the two of them - they use pretty much the same musicians for the drums, bass, keyboards. Remi has a special, special voice and Hiroki plays the guitar with feels. It reminds me of late 60's, early 70s psychedelic rock with a modern twist. It’s common in the Japanese music industry to have a core creative unit with hired studio/tour musicians (Yoasobi, Yorushika etc.) My favorite Glim Spanky song is “I Don’t Need Signal”…similar feel to this song but but with a pumping horn section. And, I will also recommend venturing into some Sheena Ringo. Stylistically (and vocally) she is hard to pin down…going from grunge to jazz to mid-century pop and beyond. Plus, Sheena was a musical inspiration for a young Kobato Miku…

Glim Spanky are Remi Matsuo on Vocals/Rythm Guitar and Hiroki Kamemoto on Lead Guitar. All other instruments are played by support members. It's like this band formed 40years too late lol but they are absolutely fantastic I put them in my personal top 5 😁I wish I'll be able to see them live during my next trip in Japan this August/September.

Remi and Hiroki are magic together. They had their major label debut in 2014 but have been playing together as a duo since 2010. The band was founded in 2007. Influences include the White Stripes, The Beatles, and Zeppelin. Remi struggled with singing in primary school and junior high, but after noticing that John Lennon's voice had a rough quality to it in songs such as "Help!", she realized that her voice would suit rock music well. She actually does not like the Joplin reference ... but as you can hear, it is inevitable. They have not had a bass player since high school. They typically hire studio musicians to fill in and can be seen here on YT in several live performances .... but the band is just Remi and Hiroki.

Glim is one of the best out there. Remi has a special voice. She is Janis Joplin but also if Janis could also sing cleaner as well. They actually have a Janis cover as well. This is one if only their punky-vibe songs. Most of their music is closer to a more classic rock.

You just found one of my other favorite Japanese bands. Her voice is unbelievable and his guitar playing is so tasty
@guitarandy24068 ай бұрын
I've often described Glim Spanky as if you had the Lenny Kravitz band fronted by a Japanese Janis Joplin/Carole King blend who also plays a solid rhythm guitar. It's kinda reductive as on the albums they have a wider range of influences & sounds; but they often choose to do things in a knowingly late 60s/early 70s retro fashion out of choice, whilst at the same time not abandoning more modern production techniques.
@guitarandy24068 ай бұрын
As others have said they mainly utilise support members from a small pool of the same musicians, to have a degree of consistency without making anyone else permanent. In Japan there's far less stigma with being a 'support musician' and you also get a fair few folk from mid level bands that also do this to supplement their income.
@JuanSan668 ай бұрын
Oh yes, the great Remi Matsuo. It's worth listening to it live, believe me. On their official channel you can find several live performances. They really are a tight band. Great suggestion!
@mikeat26378 ай бұрын
Glim Spanky are one of the best groups that play old-fashioned blues rock today. I saw in an interview where they said their influence was The Beatles, which you will see in many of their songs. They have been together since high school, which I believe was around 2006 and they've been around for quite a long time. Remi has a voice that is undefinable and extremely distinctive. There is definitely Janis Joplin style grit, but at other times I hear Grace Slick and Susanna Hoffs also. I guess you could put Amy Winehouse in there also. It's basically Remi and Hiroki, though they now have a steady drummer working with them. They use session musicians and keep pretty much to the same ones. If you want to get an idea, check out their song "Circle of Time" from their 2020 KZbin live streamed concert, it is just fire and they have a four piece string section with two violins, a viola and a cello. They always use the same keyboardist who also sings harmony with Remi and does a good job. Hiroki also chimes in on the chorus. If you want to get a sense of the variety, check out "Odd Dancer" (a very Beatles-ish song), "Lonely Boogie", "Breaking Down Blues", Remi's cover of "Move Over" by Janis, "Story No Sakini", Singin' Now" and one that will have you thinking they are a country and western group with a music video named "By Myself Again". There is also a TON of live performances that are just fantastic on YT, they have a pretty large catalogue. I went on their official channel and asked about a US Tour and they said something is in the works for late 2024 or early 2025. I'd travel to wherever I had to go to see them. And don't feel bad about referring to older styles of music, I'm old (77) and they definitely have a late 60's- early 70's psychadelic vibe as well as straight classic blues rock. They are similar to early Blood, Sweat and Tears when Al Kooper was still with the group. They also have a sound like the 1960's British blues rockers. They are just an all-around stellar group.

Great track, great band. Very much a throwback to American rock from the '70s, so it'll be in a lot of people's comfort zones. 🙂 Japanese female vocalists tend to be clear and precise, but there are quite a few known for having lots of character in their voices. I'm sure the one who will be mentioned the most is Sheena Ringo, but the one I'll bring to your attention is a relative newcomer, AiNA THE END (アイナ・ジ・エンド). Formerly one of the six vocalists in alt-idol group BiSH, she also has a successful solo career. Two very varied albums plus a third under the name Kyrie, (a film character that saw her pick up the best new actor award in Japan a few weeks back) she has also performed guest vocals with the likes of HOTEI, MONDO GROSSO and Genie High. A track like 誰誰誰 is a nice short sharp introduction to her work, but you could easily pick something like 帆, ペチカの夜 or 虹, or even ZOKINGDOG, and they will all show something very different. A very versatile writer and performer.

I love that you are featuring Glim Spanky--not enough people know about them. They were formed in 2007 as a quartet. The only constants since then have been Remi Matsuo (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Hiroki Kamemoto (lead guitar, multi-instrumentalist). A rotating cast of musicians have filled out the other positions in the band. Remi writes and composes most of their music. Where hard rock bands like Band-Maid are aggressively experimental, Glim Spanky are unabashedly a roots-rock band. They channel influences from blues, folk-rock, early hard rock and Southern rock. They are a perfect band for anyone who pines for those sounds. They have clearly studied the great bands of the 60s and 70s to gain inspiration. Their songs variously hint at Jefferson Airplane, the original Fleetwood Mac, Cream, Joan Jett, and the Allman Brothers, among others. It’s all done with a modern edge to the instrumentals and Remi’s unique, raspy voice. Listening to them can feel like being drug right back into 60’s and 70’s Americana. “Breaking Down Blues” The Blues were invented in America, and then abandoned. John Mayer, Gary Clarke and Kingfish Ingram are among the few who are trying to keep the Blues alive here. So this clip just about knocked me over. Remi sounds like a blues singer you’re sure you’ve heard before, but can’t quite place. The guitar tone is pure throwback, dirty and distorted, but his solo is decidedly modern, which is the main giveaway that this is recent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpicgGSjZrCsedk 美しい棘 (Utsukushii Ibara) ("Beautiful Thorns") The first time I heard this, I imagined someone had found a previously unknown tape from around 1970. Imagine old Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green era) and the Allman Brothers doing a song together, with a mysterious, raspy-voiced female singer. This is what it would sound like. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6Crq6embZZoqdk

The song that I first listened to by Glim Spanky was Breaking Down Blues" kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpicgGSjZrCsedk a studio sessions recording. They are also regulars to Budokan Music Festival. Enjoy!!! They do block some unfortunately. You're gonna really like this band.

They apparently started out as a 4-piece originally (I believe in school in 2007), but the 2 other members left after a couple of years (in 2010) before they even recorded anything. Their first release is from 2013 from what I can see. They are using guest/studio musicians both on their albums and live. The live musicians tend to be the same people from what I know, but on their albums they have used a couple of different bassists and drummers, even switching drummers and bassists depending on the tracks on some of the albums. The male guitar player (Hiroki) also plays bass and programs drums on some songs. Writing is mostly done by Hiroki, but Remi (the vocalist) also wrote some songs and sometimes plays guitar as well (like on this track). Their 2 newest albums are a bit more modern/electronic sounding (mainly the production) and are a bit less my thing. But they are still worth checking out, it's still very much their own sound overall. Most of their music before that has this '70's rock or blues vibe which I like a lot.

They have said they are going for a late 60s or early 70s rock sound (reflected in their clothing as well). In my mind, that means Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, or Fleetwood Mac. They are not exactly like any of those but fall somewhere in that vein. I would love to hear them do some Fleetwood Mac covers. Remi could totally nail the Stevie Nicks vocals. They have some regular session musicians who perform with them in live shows. In their live videos, you will normally see the same bassist, keyboardist, a couple of different drummers, and occasionally another guitarist, cellist, and/or violinists. The band officially consists of only the two you see in this video. Mayu (Nemophila) is another singer with some rasp in her voice. Not quite as much as Remi until Mayu goes into her metalcore screams/growls.

Most of the guitars have distortion, but at the 2:00 min mark, the guitar has Fuzz on the lead guitar part which sounds pretty good it is also used at several other points in the song. Distortion and Fuzz can sound similar, but Fuzz has the sound of bees in a box sound which is unique to Fuzz pedals.
