Does TC Electronic's MOJOMOJO Really Sound THAT Good?

In today's video, we are having a look at the TC Electronic MOJOMOJO overdrive. This was the original pedal that I bought along side my Vox AC15c1 back in 2017. I liked it but ended up trading it for some gear, which I can't remember. Since then, I've been asked so many times to demo this pedal on the channel. Well, here it is at last!
I'm using my Vox AC15, loaded with a single Celestion Greenback. The Mic is a Shure SM57, going to my PreSonus Studio 192 Mobile. In Reaper, I am adding a high pass filter at 100Hz, and the guitar tracks are mastered at -14dB LUFS.

The MojoMojo is one of the best overdrive pedals on the market at any price. You might not know this, but the MojoMojo is really intended to reproduce the sound of the Vox AC100 amplifier (hence the maroon and gold color scheme, to reflect the Vox grille). You might also consider turning the Gain knob down. Overdrive pedals are never at their best with the Gain knob all the way up. Any fool and crank a knob; it takes subtlely to understand that lower gain almost always sounds better.

I did not know this about the Mojomojo. Where did you get this information? I would like to read up on it some more.

@@TheToneLounge If you watch the tc electronic demo video for the MojoMojo from 2015 Tore says that it is "designed to give you the raw and throaty sound of a certain famous 100 W British amp", and while it is never said which, the amp in the video just happens to be a Vox AC100.

I've had one for awhile and finally got around to plugging it into my Matchless Lightning clone. Works pretty dang well! Seems a bit flubby at higher bass settings but it stacks very well with other ODs. I'm quite delighted by how well it works with a Vox circuit.

If you watch TCE's product release video the guy says Mojo Mojo is "based on a certain legendary British amp's OD circuit". Take that tidbit, thyen look at the pedal's color scheme. It should explain why it works so well with Vox amps....

It is quite a mid-rangy and very quiet pedal. I use it before my DS1 and push them both into a marshall profile amp. It sounds like a monster.

The key is to really experiment with the Mojomojo. Many give up on it too quickly.

My experience with this pedal is that it is simply a TC Dark Matter with slightly less breakup. They sound identical at every level short of all-out.

Or maybe the Dark Matter is just a MojoMojo with slightly more breakup. And the Rottweiler is a Dark Matter with even more breakup. :D

I own this great pedal since 2016 and I can tell you that I still love it. It is actually on my pedalboard as I playing rock and heavy rock stuff. Versatile big sounding pedal.

I agree about Single coils into a clean amp, I think the bass helps with single coil guitars. I never use it to boost amps, I use it like an Amp in a box, I think there are much better boost pedals out there (that's my POV not saying its gospel) but as an Amp like drive its really good and does everything from to warm clean through to Fuzzy Doomy sounds

Yeah, it can seem a bit underwhelming as a pedal, but I've spent enough time with it to know that it's quite capable of good tones. It's a matter of making it work with your rig.

Not totally inspired by the tones, but I love the thoroughness of your testing. But I do think in a context of a live band where you need some crunch - this pedal might be great. Sometimes gear is like this, totally exceeds as utilitarian gear, more so than your favorite gear. Where as our favorite bedroom gear may totally fall apart in a live situation

It's not a "magical" pedal, but it can be a useful tool. For this price point, one could buy a much worse pedal.

This is by no means a bad pedal but very average. Not tasteless but not tasty either. The celery of pedals. Hand in hand with the spark the situation gets better. My preferred moment when on its own is the fuzz attempt.
