Living on an island near the north pole is everything but ordinary, not only do we have polar bears, glaciers and crazy seasons - we also have weird, random laws. One of these laws is the alcohol card, which gives each citizen of the legal drinking age, a monthly quota on what beverages they can purchase and how much. This is the second video on this topic where I address some of the questions that I got on the last one, like what if you are a visitor, does the ration apply to bars? I hope you enjoy it and thank you for being here! 🧡

Hi Cecilia! I’m not sure if you have already mentioned it in one of your previous videos but I’m really interested in how the judicial system works on Svalbard. I know that you have said that the crime rate is pretty nonexistent but is there even a jail or holding center up there or do people automatically go to the mainland for that? Is there a courthouse for people to pay minor law infractions, have divorce hearings or get married? Thank you for continuing to make these videos! They are so beautifully made and are so enjoyable to watch!

I live on Svalbard too and I can answer those questions for you. 😊 There is no real jail. If you were really really in trouble you could be placed like in a room in handcuffs but you would be shipped off the island almost immediately. Courthouses and divorce things have to be handled on the mainland.

It would be interesting to continue with a "meet the locals" series, interviewing people in various professions (e.g. hospitality, government, teachers, fishermen, guides, researchers/scientists, etc.) about what they do, why they came to Svalbard, what their lives are like. Funny facts, Here in Finland, when things were strict in the past (1960's) it was obligatory to order a sandwich with a beer and waiters moved sandwich from table to table and the customers drank beer. Women without company were denied access to restaurants. "Spritkort, formellt namn Butiksbevis, var i Finland ett identitetskort som krävdes för att köpa alkoholdrycker på Alko. Kortet var en del av ett system som syftade till att kontrollera invånarnas alkoholkonsumtion. I kortet antecknades vilka inköp innehavaren gjort. Spritkortet infördes 1944 och avskaffades slutligen 1970. "

Hi there, here are some things I’m curious about regarding Svalbard: What is emergency preparedness like in Svalbard? Do you have a large personal storage of food and water, in addition to your grocery store’s 3-month stock? Is there anything else you store extra of? What emergencies are deemed the most likely? Also, what is the culture in Svalbard in regards to relationships and marriage? Are most couples there of people who were single when they met in Svalbard? Do taxes incentivize marriage? Is there stigma against married people? What percentage of kids who are raised in Svalbard continue to live there as adults? What percentage of Svalbard residents moved there as an adult?

I really enjoy when you talk about your personal experiences and do DITL vlogs. I look forward to content about your renovations or if you've decided to have child or not, etc. I want to see more about "ordinary life". Given the remoteness of your location and how that affects you, simple daily activities suffice imo. Because in the end, regardless of cultural, linguistic and location differences, we are all the same in our day-to-day lives. I suppose you can't always please all of your audience, and from the comments below, a lot of people seem to enjoy this style of content, but for me, lately some o it has been feeling like I'm reading a Wikipedia page about Svalbard while watching drone shots.

Makes sense. I remember watching a TV show about Alaskan police and they dealt with a lot of drunks, especially during winter. People who were prone to depression, violence, what have you, can get quite unruly. Not saying this can't happen all over the world, but I got the impression that depression is more of a cause in the areas where there is a lot of darkness during the winter, thus, heavy drinking. Edit: Your hair and face are perfectly lovely! Don't apologize! :)

Yeah I think it's one of the reasons that we have strict alcohol laws in all of the Nordic countries too. Here in Finland you can only buy alcoholic beverages over 5% in government ran alcohol stores, which aren't open during Sundays and have limited opening hours during weekends (like 6 hours on Saturday). Otherwise you can buy regular beers/ciders from stores only between 9am and 9pm. Alcohol is taxed at over 100%. My dad said there used to be quotas in Finland too, you had to get a stamp to buy alcohol, but they removed the quotas after sometime.

@@AK-jm1sc thank you for the information. Wow, yeah that makes sense. We definitely don't have all that in the U.S. I get depressed enough during the winter, and I'm not even that far north. I can't imagine living through so much darkness.

I think it's more of an issue of countries that are primarily Protestant versus Catholic historically. European countries that were primarily Catholic have very little restrictions on alcohol while Protestants are more likely to view alcohol consumption as sinful. Even if they don't think of it as a religious issue anymore, it still likely influences their willingness to regulate it. There are absolutely states in the US that heavily restrict alcohol consumption. It can also be a local issue. There are still many dry counties. Utah has the strictest regulations and you cannot buy anything above 3.2% abv even at a bar, they have to mix drinks behind a curtain where customers can't see the bartender, and the legal limit to drive is only 5% rather than the usual 8%, among other things I'm probably forgetting. Don't forget that the US completely banned alcohol for about 15 years. This was an effort presumably led by a coalition of Protestant women who argued that it would reduce cases of domestic violence. Unfortunately, it was also heavily influenced by a strong anti-immigrant and particularly anti-Catholic sentiment in American government. The Smithsonian did a documentary about Prohibition in American called "Drinks, Crime, and Prohibition" if you are interested in the ulterior motives behind Prohibition. It is really sad how many laws in the U.S. were the direct result of racism and xenophobia.

How do you guys feel it (temperature, nature: grass growth, vegetation, shore erosion, slope avalanches, snow and ice retreat), how does the government react to it (advice, alerts, new laws etc)? And if it gets too warm, would you move to Antarctica to keep having ice and cold? ^^

Hello Cecilia. I want to first say thank you for showing us you little slice of heaven. I can tell from the video's you produce, that you spend a lot of time and effort into each. So professionally done. Bravo! My heart turns to mush when you put great music to the drone shots. To me it is one of the highlights of the videos.. The music is so great and it makes the video have so much more feeling. I look forward to those each time. Because of the music I have found new artists to listen to during my day. So I am going to take you up on your request for ideas. 1. What grows in the soil in your town and your lot during the summer months? 2. Could you do a time lapse of the sun in the sky 24 hour so we can see how the world is tracking our the sun from your cabin during all sun season? gives a new meaning to Sunday. 3. Is there any insects during summertime? If so what type? 4.What is the plumbing system for your cabin. I understand you bring in water but how do you remove gray water from the area. What about freezing pipes or is there no pipes out, only storage tanks. 5. Does your dog have any dog friends? 6. You live on a water, what is on the shoreline. I don't remember any vids of you going down to the shore during summer? Would love to see what washes up on the shore . Because you have decided to live in the arctic, it would be helpful to see the weather with wind speed and barometric pressures. Do you have one of those "all in one" weather stations that Chris could put on the cabin so we could see the stats your living in at that moment. I track via the weather channel of your location and notice that now during July the high and lows vary only maybe 5 degrees F. Your videos make it look so inviting and I so thank you for the work you do to make us viewers (subscribers) all happy watching them. Keep it going and thank you.

As someone who works in local government in Canada, I would love to learn more about how your local government works over in Svalbard! Is there a planning department there? Do you have elected officials? What is the process like for developments? Are there public hearings or townhall meetings where elected officials debate on various policies or developments before approving them? Do members of the public in Svalbard get involved at all with local government decision making processes?

I absolutely love your videos, Cecilia! 😍 I would adore living in the same place that you live. Since I was a child I think it, that it's my favorite place in the world! I'll go to Alaska this year in October for 7 days! 🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰 You asked for suggestions! I have one!! I would love to know how the clime affects your dog, or dogs in general. How is your perception of it, you know? Polar night and light all the time... and if they feel comfortable with 15 Celsius, like now, or -30. All these questions in general about dogs. Does everybody has dogs in your city or is it something uncommon? Anyway! Everything about dogs! (I absolutely love dogs 🐕 🐩 ❤️ 😍)! Thank you so much 🌹😘😍🌟🙏👸🏻🤩🤗

I found your channel about a week ago and have been watching lots of your past videos. Thank you for sharing your life with viewers. Having never heard of your island before last week I’d love to visit Svalbard one day. Today’s worldle map was Svalbard - I got it in one go which would never have happened before I found your channel!

It looks so beautiful there with green grass growing. Seems incredible to see it so warm & free of snow when you are so close to the north pole. Only one month to go so enjoy it while you can. This hopefully means that in one month I will start to see longer days & maybe some sunshine again. Unlike you, I hate the cold winters owing to my low thyroid & not being able to warm up my internal engine so counting the days to summer & wondering if it will again be a wet cool summer with more floods or whether we will be back to our usual hot summers. So far it is not looking good as they are predicting that La Nina will again visit us with more flooding rain but they won't know for certain until October.

I am absolutely mesmerized by Svalbard and how things are 'done'. I, for one, would have no issues with an alcohol card. Firstly, I'm a Swede and am used to only being able to purchase 'hard' liquor in a specific store (Systembolaget) but I'm also not really a drinker. I might purchase one bottle of wine a year or ten bottles of Kopparberg or Rekorderlig cider (cider being only around 4.4% though). I have, for a long time now, considering moving to your part of the world. After having lived in the UK (England) for just over 24 years, I feel myself wanting something different. I hate hot weather (I'm from northern Sweden originally) and don't mind the snow, ice, cold and dark. I'm 54 next year though, so not sure what I'd be able to contribute with in a place, seemingly, in need of a certain type of worker. I must admit, I haven't really researched anything that closely, but it's on my mind every now and then. As always - thank you for your videos. TTFN

Watching your video I would like to be there as in Italy, like in all other Southern European countries, we are suffering high temperatures and even in the northermost valleys of the Alps, I live in one of them, it is too hot and this is terrible. We have never had such temperatures. Anyway your video is great and above all informative, as usual. Thank you for sharing.

Here in the States I've been watching reports on that. Also understand that unlike here, many places don't have air conditioning as these high temperatures are so unusual. Places here like in Texas are having triple degree temps.

LOL! 15C and sweating! Don't I wish. Today is going to be about 34-35C degrees, where I live. My husband's comment on the 24 cans of beer ration a month was, well I guess we're not moving to Svalbard. He has his one beer in the evening, and that would put him past the 24 can limit. ;)

I don't really drink much anyway so it would never bother me lol. My parents lived in Dubai for few years and they had to have (as ex-pats) a licence and limit per month on alcohol. Very interesting video. Also that has to be THE best view from a kitchen door... period. Stunning! Thank you for sharing Cecilia ❤️

Temperatures are rising in Arctic faster than anywhere els in the world, we are at the point where permafrost is starting to melt, you have 5 to 10 years left before permafrost in Svalbard become unstable and where infrastructure starts to sink in the ground, at that point life in Svalbard is going to be unsustainable ,what is the plan that Norwegian government has for the people who would need to evacuate and what is going to happen with the compensation for the private property that is going to be destroyed in melting of the permafrost , it would be good idea if you can make video regarding that or even better if you can interview one of the government officials. Thanks
