Does The American Express Gold Card Still Make Sense in 2024?

The Resy credit was the best change to the Gold card - straight $100 back in my pocket. The recent changes made the Gold card even more valuable for the people it was always meant for. Based on the grumbling I see online, it seems a lot of people who have the Gold card really don’t have the lifestyle to support it.

We spend a lot on food so im keeping my gold card. Plus when i took my wife to her favorite restaurant it triggered the Resy credit. I was pleasantly surprised

There’s a small subset of people for whom the gold card is perfect. It’s a lifestyle card. Great for those people, but I think there are better options for most people. While I know the venture X competes with the CSR and platinum card, I’d argue that the venture X is a better option for most people than the gold card. Now that the gold card’s annual fee has increased, the venture x is actually closer to the gold card’s annual fee than it is to either CSR or platinum. And it’s the easiest premium travel card to earn back the fee.

I like that with the changes we can get more value back. I have the gold but will downgrade it after year one to play the upgrade downgrade game. Great overview of the card 👍🏼
