Does the Construction Industry Scheme apply to you?

The Construction Industry Scheme applies more widely than many people appreciate. This webinar outlined some unexpected aspects of the CIS, as well as discussing recent important changes to the CIS which came into effect from 6 April 2024.
Speaker biographies:
Isobel d'Inverno
Isobel advises on the corporate tax aspects of company acquisitions, disposals and reconstructions and real estate taxation, including student accommodation and private rented sector developments and structuring inward investment in Scottish real estate by offshore investors and funds.
Isobel's experience includes Brexit related VAT and customs duty issues, funds taxation, real estate taxes (LBTT, SDLT and LTT) as well as property VAT, capital allowances and the Construction Industry Scheme.
Isobel also advises a range of charities on tax issues including setting up trading subsidiaries, Gift aid donations by trading subsidiaries to parent charities, charitable VAT exemptions and VAT implications of business and non-business activities.
She works closely with the Scottish Government and Revenue Scotland in relation to the ongoing development of the Land and Buildings Transaction Tax and the 4% Additional Dwelling Supplement. Isobel is a member of the Devolved Taxes Legislative Working Group, set up by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament to consider different ways of making changes to the devolved taxes which issued its interim report on 6 February 2020.
Kirsteen Milne
Kirsteen has a masters in construction law (with distinction) and is dual qualified in Scotland and England and Wales, having over 20 years' experience in providing advice on all aspects of construction work, acting for employers, contractors, consultants, funders, developers, and sub-contractors in the private and public sector, drafting and negotiating bespoke contracts and all major forms of industry standard contracts (JCT, SBCC, ICE, NEC, IChem , FIDIC etc).
Kirsteen works with clients from the outset of projects, from producing procurement strategies, through implementation, and onto completion, providing advice on risk management at all stages of the construction process.
Kirsteen has advised on a variety of projects: from refurbishment of a 5 star hotel, the development of the new European headquarters for an international bank, new schools and a series of student accommodation projects throughout the UK to energy from waste plants, distilleries, civils contracts relating to installation of fibreoptic broadband and social housing. Kirsteen has also been providing advice to contractors and developers relating to the Building Safety Act 2022 in England & Wales and particularly how best to manage the new Gateway process.
