The fact that I can record with my JMP100 with my PS2 and keep the organic tone of the amp is still black magic to me but it works as you have shown and dumble style amps sound like dumble style amps etc. great job

I love this because I too wondered... but instead of going on a research safari I simply decided to have faith that I never noticed it, and I had faith in Fryette. I heard minor differences at different points and sometimes none at all, but never enough to make me question the tube tone I was hearing... in fact, I times I perceived a variance I often liked it. But not in a million years would I likely perceive anything if I wasn't hearing close A/B and looking for it.

I noticed a difference, but It isn't like either one sounded bad. I know that in the room you can go back and forth between the PS being on bypass or not and dial the PS in to get it to sound basically identical to the amp without it in the room. Is the PS the same as playing directly into a cranked Marshall? I don't think it's identical, but I also think it sounds good and feels good. I don't know of another attenuator that is this good.

That’s disappointing, I was hoping to turn my Marshall into a Fender Deluxe at the click of a switch. Looks like I’m still going to have to carry around 2 heads instead of one. 😆😉

I heard the difference! I guessed Ex.1 only because I heard more of Eddie's signature brown sound out of Ex. 2, but what do I know, and they both sounded awesome.

It is possible to put 6L6 tubes in a Plexi after some little changes. It will not make it sound like a Fender. It will still sound like a Plexi -- pretty much like one with 6550s in it. My old Laney amp had EL84s. It did not make it sound 'chimey' like a Vox. If I had put 6V6s in there it would not have sounded like a Fender Champ. Putting KT66s in my JMP 50 build will not make it sound like a JTM 45 either. Quite a lot of folks seem to think tubes are primarily what make amps sound the way they do. Not sure why.

Love my PS100! Just curious, how hot to the touch is too hot? The unit seems to run hotter than my other gear.

@@FryetteAmps great, I'll give it a try. 100 watts of unattenuated Plexi power should keep them away. Haha

Would it be easier to say that power amp doesn't alter the sound, it is the eq stack that makes the sound (part of preamp), power amp is suppose to be neutral and it almost is even that it is tube amp (old tech and not so neutral as transistor amp).

It might be easier to say, but it's a bit of an oversimplification and misleading to say it that way.

The Power Amp of an amplifier is bypassed when you use the Freyette PS system, right? So it’s basically just the preamp sound of the amp, louder?

Short answer: No, but if you variac it and underbias the power tubes it'll make it sound like EVH.

Example #1 sounded the best through my headphones. It sounded clearer & the distortion that was on it actually sounded more musical Example #2 sounded a bit darker & it wasn't even close to the Example #1.

@markhamstra1083
@markhamstra1083 Жыл бұрын
Of course they do. An awful lot of guitarists have completely bought into the mistaken notion that 6L6s, EL34s, EL84s, etc. each have a distinctive and easily identified sound quality contribution regardless of the rest of the amp in which they are found. If you start from that mistaken premise, then the mistaken conclusion readily follows that a Power Station with 6L6s must make everything played through it sound more like a Fender amp that also uses 6L6s.

@@markhamstra1083 excellent explanation. Guitarists need to just play and quit wasting time falling into the uninformed rabbit hole.

You can't really blame people too much with the popular lore put out there through magazines (geared towards selling, which involves a lot of "magic dust" in component choices), and the stuff you see on message boards with people all justifying their favourite hobby horses. Most artists don't have an engineering mentality (which is half of a good thing - they're high in aesthetics and very suggestible). It takes a few uncomfortable years of falsification to develop one.
